They have not arrived yet. Maybe tomorrow. It's a BBC monitor so it should sound pretty neutral. I expect audiophile recordings to sound amazing but poor recordings will show their weaknesses (and that sadly includes a lot of '70s music).

It's fine to not like Aliens (I suppose). De gustibus non est disputandum & all that. But there really shouldn't be any question as to why it's so popular. That's readily apparent to even the film's detractors. It's a much more kinetic, crowd pleasing film than Alien, with the types of characters cinema audiences are used to cheering.  Cinephiles and horror movie lovers will probably prefer Alien, but I think the typical movie watcher will pick Aliens nine times out of ten.

With its slow, moody pace, dark tone and non-archetypal characters, the success of Alien (which is the better film IMO) is actually a testament to what a masterful job Ridley Scott did with that movie. It could have easily fallen into B-movie territory and even campiness in the hands of lesser director.

I never understood why Alien is/was so popular. It's a very slow paced simple story with low key characters. And perhaps even more than that, the film is very focused on the artistic and design side of things, very much like Ridley Scott made The Duellists, which was actually the reason why they hired him. OTOH, Aliens is an adrenaline ride with a more complex story and sharply silhouetted characters. And perhaps even more than that, it's the foundation of modern video games.

    About Schmidt.

Wow. That was pretty good. One of the things I liked was the calm pacing, though I wish they wouldn’t have cut off that speech about why God can handle it when we’re angry with him. All the actors are great, and most especially Kathy Bates, but even though I accepted Nicholson in the end, I often wondered whether he was miscast. He sometimes seemed too rigid for the character, or the character too rigid for him, I don’t know. The man he met on his journey was a bit weird, but I love how I only feel I got a complete picture of Schmidt at the very end. That final letter he wrote was so moving, though the sister voice-over was kind of lame. I also wish he would have ended up together with Roberta.
The score is fantastic. The cues for harp and strings are heart-breaking and yet so simple. The music is so varied I think some of it might have been written by other people and the main theme gets incredible variations in both minor and major keys.

So...BLADE RUNNER 2049 is restrained, is it, Alex? I find it among the most obnoxious, annoying, ostentatious, and narcissistic pieces of cinematography I've ever seen.

There's some movies I actually like that had awful trailers. X-Men: First Class, for instance, had a horrible marketing campaign, with laughable posters, uninspiring trailers, etc., but when I watched it, I realized it's one of the very best X-movies.

@rough cut It's all good! I enjoy having discussions here, especially over differences. I didn't find you to be too hot-headed.  In that case, I usually don't see a point to engage as I don't think we'll ever come to understand each other, so I just step away. But it seemed like we just had some misunderstandings, which makes sense considering it's a pretty complicated and subjective conversation to an extent. I'm certainly willing to keep cool and put forth the effort in that case.

To reiterate. I think it is perfectly fine to have the opinion that it's a bad decision. I don't actually necessarily wholeheartedly defend the decision either in this specific case for Justice League.

To do my best at keeping it somewhat short: I think Director's should shoot for and release the aspect ratio they want, regardless of how any of us feel about it. We could discuss how good or bad of a decision it is forever and neither of us would be "right" necessarily. That being said, I actually think the Justice League team took the lazy route when filming and framed shots to work in both ratios while shooting, which ends up diminishing both ratios off and on throughout the movie. So, it's not a model film for 4:3 or 16:9 framing really, but if that's what Snyder wants to do then I say he should go for it. He's the dude in charge. You're totally right though that you don't have to like it. That's why I advocated using the crop in feature on TVs since thats a decision you can make to view it closer to how the 16:9 version would've looked.

Basically, I don't necessarily defend the framing itself, but rather his decision to release it that way. And of course I also defend a Director's ability to decide whatever ratio he wants to shoot for initially. Whether or not the ratio is a good idea is entirely up for discussion. I just don't support saying that Director's should all shoot in 16:9 from the get go as I think the ratio is a part of creative storytelling.

In the end, my goal was to say: Technically and factually speaking this isn't a 4:3 cropped image, it's the entire film negative (to quash the misconception that there is picture "missing") and Snyder should release the film, however he pleases. You are absolutely correct though that you don't have to like it. I just don't think we can say that he never should've had the opportunity to release it the way he wants. Does that make sense?

Big Eyes was okay, I guess, but very forgettable. I do remember liking Elfman's score in the context of the movie.
