  1. Who's the more interesting character in PJ's 6 films? I would have to say Bilbo without even having anything resembling a second thought. I find Freeman a far more interesting actor then Wood. And his character, even with loadfs of invented subplots has a lot more meat on it's bones. It's the same way in the books for me, actually. Bilbo for the win!
  2. Hello. I started this thread at blu-ray.com too, but i didn't get many suggestions in what i was looking for. I'm searching for films of the specific time frame, whose plot is in autumn, with many autumn landscapes and an autumn feel. I'm not searching for Halloween, or Thanksgiving movies (i will be searching for those in their own time). (neither horror/thrillers) One that fits the criteria, that I've seen, is The Trouble with Harry. Also When harry Mets Sally was suggested. I've seen it but I don't remember it much.. Rudy - that I watched yesterday - was very autumn-y too (although it had a couple of winter scenes) Dead poets Society has an excellent autumn atmosphere (the one I'm looking for), but its later part is held in snowy winter, so I'm keeping that for later..
  3. Anyone else here a fan of Ender's Game or any of its sequel books? I read Ender's Game a few years back and was blown away by how good it was! It was already top notch before the climax, and the climax was so PERFECT and unexpected that just amped up my appreciation ever more........ and then, the denouement was equally stunning and perfect. What a great novel! I read the sequel - Speaker For The Dead - shortly after, and while I did like it, it's quite a different novel from Ender's Game, and I haven't been compelled to read its sequels (Xenocide and Children of the Mind) yet. I might instead move on to the shadow series, starting with Ender's Shadow - which I hear is quite good. I am interested in what happened to all those character's from Ender's Game since they don't appear in the original sequels. Since that series he's continued to write prequels and side-quells and spin-offs and all sorts of other stuff I don't know anything about. However, what I am really excited about is that after YEARS of development hell, they are FINALLY making a movie version - it's filming right now! It stars the kid from Hugo as Ender (great choice!), Abigail Breslin (yes, the Little Miss Sunshine chick) as Valentine, Ben Kinglsey as Mazer, and Harrison Freaking Ford as Graff (!!!!!) Apparently the script is a combo of elements from both Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow. Should be interesting. The latest news is that the film just got pushed back from March 2013 to November 13, opening just 3 weeks before the sequel to The Hunger Games. I think this is a brilliant move. Any one else read the books? Anyone else pumped for the film? I wonder who will score the film? Giacchino would be PERFECT!!!!!! The director's last film was X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which was scored by Harry Gregson-Williams.
  4. What films were so f*cking awful that you'll never bother watching them again? A few that made my list... ATTACK OF THE CLONES (2002) -- I made my mother take me to this following my birthday. That poor lady. Even when I was 12, I could tell that she couldn't stand being there. 300 (2006) -- Just one of those films that really doesn't require a second viewing. I watched it because of all the hype surrounding it and found it to be a steaming turd, just like most of Snyder's films. SPIDERMAN (2002) -- Boring trash.
  5. I just read this interesting article on 2014 films coming out that aren't sequels, prequels, reboots, or adaptations: http://www.buzzfeed.com/wordsbydan/14-movies-in-2014-that-arent-sequels-prequels-r-b6bd?bffb I have not seen a trailer for most of these movies, let alone even heard of most of them. But many sound intriguing! Of course beyond those types of films, there are many franchise movies coming out, like X-Men 6, Transformers 4, Hobbit 3, Hunger Games 3, Night at the Museum 3, Expendables 3, How To Train Your Dragon 2, Captain America 2, Muppets 2, Spider-man 2, Dumb and Dumber 2, Veronica Mars, Robocop, Godzilla, etc. Here's a complete list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_in_film If I could only see 5 films in the theater in 2014, they would be: The Hobbit: There and Back Again Interstellar Jupiter Ascending Sin City 2 Gone Girl So what are you excited for?
  6. Inspired by Bloodboal's thread, I thought there would maybe be some interest to put pure score to scenes, and take out all the dialogue, and sound effects to enjoy the music fully? I started a project way back ago, but I could not get all the edits exact, but it is still enjoyable to watch Here are a few I did ages ago for fun: Test Drive from How to Train Your Dragon The Might of Rome from Gladiator War from Avatar
  7. Anyone interested in this movie and score? I loved Chris McQuarrie's The Way of the Gun (his sole directorial feature so far) and I always found the score by Joe Kraemer quite interesting, so I'm intrigued by this new feature. Now, as you may know, Jack Reacher is based on popular series of crime novels written by Lee Child (which I haven't read) and I know fans of the books were sorely disappointed by the choice of Tom Cruise as the leading character--in the books Reacher is described as a middle-aged big tough guy with dark blonde hair. However, the movie looks interesting mainly because it seems to harken back to 1970s action thriller stylings (i.e. The French Connection, Taking of Pelham 123, Scorpio, etc.), a favourite genre of mine. I was reading FSM's Tim Grieving http://projectorandorchestra.com/reaching-high/'>blog post about the film and when I read the following paragraph I was truly excited: This one looks like a score to look forward to. Here's the trailer for those who haven't seen it yet:
  8. Star Trek Into Darkness has now opened in Australia. If you've seen it and want to discuss it, post here! If you want to discuss spoilers online from reviews or other postings of people who have seen it, do it here! The existing thread is to remain spoiler free, and can continue to be used to discuss the trailers, posters, pictures, magazine articles, showtimes, etc, leading up to when you actually see it. Enjoy!
  9. For those of you who don't know, Before Sunrise is a 1995 film starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy and it's about two people who meet on a train and spend a romantic night together but they know it's only their one night together. It's more of a romantic drama than a romantic comedy. Before Sunset is a 2004 film and it is set nine years later when our two characters meet again and have to deal with how each of their lives have turned out since their one night together. For myself, I think I would pick Before Sunrise because it's a little more pure and 'fairy-tale' like where the Jesse-Celine romance is being developed rather than the rather grounded Before Sunset which sheds Before Sunrise's escapism and deals with the aftermath of Before Sunrise.
  10. Don't know if this was ever officially announced or not, but a new Morricone composition called "Ancora Qui" will appear on the Django Unchained soundtrack (and presumably in the film): http://www.comingsoo...ws.php?id=97485
  11. - Crazy Picard - Enterprise destroyed because they didn't just rotate the shield modulation and apparently Data and Geordi forgot how to save the ship like they did for the entire show in far worse situations - Kirk falls off a bridge, or on the bridge - Borg have time travel technology and go to the day before First Contact - Disobeying Starfleet orders constantly and helping the Ba'ku - Dune buggy, Schinzon and basically everything in Nemesis Now, the TNG movies are guilty pleasures, don't get me wrong. Yet, the original series movies due to their generally higher quality and the consistency of the characters with the show feel more like a natural continuation of that series. TNG movies do not. It feels like they were farmed out to writers and people who had no idea what the hell Star Trek was about.
  12. http://lightsourceandimagery.com/portfolio-item/kubrick-documentary/ In association with Warner Bros., Light Source & Imagery has just completed a Stanley Kubrick documentary which will premiere in November 2012 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. This documentary is a centerpiece to the Stanley Kubrick Exhibition, which will run through May 2013. Alex

  16. Hiya gang, With The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey now having premiered and people beginning to discuss it on twitter, etc, this is the thread where people can discuss the film and what is and isn't in it without ruining things for those who wish to remain spoiler-free. The existing thread was getting full of people speculating about specific scenes based on movie tie-in books and OST music, etc, with many people leaving the thread to not be spoiled. This is now the thread that that kind of discussion should take place in, while the old thread can be used for posts about buying tickets, and anything officially released like commercials, trailers, interviews, etc. Thanks for playing along!
  17. Describe the moment between the theater lights dimming and the fanfare blast for you. What was going through your head? I can't imagine what it must have been like. I try to think about what I would be thinking in that moment. Honestly I would probably wonder if the music for the titles would be different. If there would be a title crawl. If the text color would be different for that crawl. If the text might crawl right to left? I mean...at that point, it could have gone in any direction.
  18. Now that I finally got to hear the OST - the score Shore intended for The Hobbit - I feel it was fairly disrespectful to replace much of this masterful and profound production with music pretty much copy and posted from the original LOTR soundtracks. The soundtrack is simply great and I wish it would have been preserved in the film. Then I wonder about The Phantom Menace. We all know how Williams' score was chopped up and butchered for the final act. But what if Lucas had taken a similar route Jackson took and had actually placed familiair music from ESB or ROTJ in TPM instead of Williams' newly written score...? What if Darth Maul's appearance would suddenly be put to The Imperial March, completely ignoring Williams' new material for the scene...? Would that be something like the Nazgul music supporting an important scene involving Thorin in The Hobbit? Well, at least The Hobbit got a proper official release. So which score do you feel got the most disrespect in the editing room...?
  19. I noticed that filmmusic posted a thread in another forum talking about his film watching and that the majority of the films he watched were pre -1960. I have no idea of the number of films I've seen, I would guess in the thousands, but I'd need a Leonard Maltin book to figure that. Still I seen many and forgotten many films but I do know I have a fondness for old films. I have always had a fondness for B movies from the black and white era. And not just horror movies, but old movie series, and mysteries. Of course I love new movies and always will. I do believe in the adage that they don't make them like they used too, but that is both a negative and a positive.
  20. Yesterday I watched E.T. in Bluray with 3 other people. 2 of them had never seen it. From that experience and from others too, I think I totally enjoy watching movies more, when I'm alone. You are totally isolated from the outside world and go deep inside the world of the movie. Yesterday, the comments, and sometimes in very inappropriate dramatic moments, didn't let me enjoy it, and also I was mad about them sometimes, although I didn't show it.. The viewing experience was ruined, and sometimes it ruins my opinion of the movie too.. For example, I was just thinking that now, everytime i want to watch this film, when i view a certain scene maybe I'll remember a bad joke someone mentioned, and I won't be able to get emotional and be dragged into the film.. I hope this doesn't happen... well, now that i think about it, maybe it depends on the movie. Maybe comedies are better watched with company (hmmm.. that's why i don't like comedies?) and the rest, alone. What do you think?
  21. This summer? Next summer? Who cares, the war for 2012, the last summer before the end of the Mayan Calendar, is on! New Batman movie slated for July 20, 2012, 3 weeks after Star Trek sequel
  22. Disney has released the teaser trailer for Sam Raimi's Wizard of Oz prequel Oz: The Great & Powerful in the wake of its Comic Con debut. [media=] It looks a lot better than I was expecting. I hope Danny Elfman can weave the same kind of magic he did for Alice in Wonderland three years prior.
  23. "John Carter" - 2nd place. Here's the list: 10. One For The Money 9. The Odd Life Of Timothy Green 8. What To Expect When You're Expecting 7. Alex Cross 6. The Lorax 5. This Means War 4.
