  1. Well it's definitely been a busy last few years for Mr. Silvestri! I addition to scoring new films Captain America, The Avengers, Flight, The Croods, and Red 2, there have also been a lot of re-issues, expansions, and world premieres of some of his older scores: On 2011-09-20, 1990's Young Guns II had its world premiere on Intrada Records. On 2011-11-02, 1987's Overboard had its world premiere on Music Box Records On 2012-03-06, 1987's Predator was finally given the definitive, unlimited treatment from Intrada Records. On 2012-05-14, 1986's Clan Of The Cave Bear was re-issued by Varese on their ENCORE line. On 2012-10-09, 1992's The Bodyguard had its world premiere on La-La Land Records. On 2013-06-25, 1985's Fandango had its world premiere on Intrada Records. On 2013-07-16, 1994's Clean Slate and 1995's The Perez Family had their world premieres on Music Box Records. Phew! And it's not stopping! According to an FSM poster: http://filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=98085&forumID=1&archive=0 It's a good time to be a Silvestri fan!
  2. Check out the official website of D2 Mastering: http://d2mastering.com/ Click "Clients" in the upper left, and scroll down to "Soundtracks/Soundtrack Reissues 2013" BOOM. NOTE: I did not discover this myself, and if I had I would not have publicly posted about it in order to let the specialty labels do their own announcing. This was discovered by ScottDS on FSM and posted there, so I wanted to create a thread to discuss the news here. Again, no disrespect meant to Varese, I did not make this discovery or break this news. See the FSM thread where it broke here: http://filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=98243&forumID=1&archive=0
  3. 4. Eagle-eyed readers might notice that this track list is different than the previously announced digital download version..... which had this track list: Source: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007R7VHOM/ The reason is that it was decided to make the Intrada physical CD LONGER than the digital one!! Source: http://www.intrada.n....php?f=4&t=4781 How cool is that? Intrada is seriously a classy, top-notch label.
  5. Knockout Alan Silvestri soundtrack gets royal treatment! Smash-hit Touchstone Pictures & Steven Spielberg presentation finds Robert Zemeckis blending live action, animation in masterful ground-breaking fashion. 1988 film stars Bob Hoskins, Christopher Lloyd, Stubby Kaye, Charles Fleischer, Joanna Cassidy… plus animated Roger Rabbit, Jessica Rabbit and plenty of “Toons”. Reunion of Spielberg, Zebecks & Silvestri after 1982 blockbuster Back To The Future spawns Los Angeles 40’s-era whodunit with boozed gumshoe Eddie Valiant sucked into solving murder of Toontown’s owner, with Roger, Jessica, Eddie’s deceased brother and evil Judge Doom all participants in solid mystery. Along the way are cameos from Disney’s Dumbo, Fleischer’s Betty Boop, Donald & Daffy Duck, Yosemite Sam, many others. Classic scenes abound! Animated “dueling pianos” sequence with pair of ducks is a visual/aural highlight. Accompanying music by Liszt, arranged by Silvestri and featuring two ducks wacky dialog was included on original 1988 Disney album of soundtrack highlights. Intrada 3-CD release presents both premiere of complete cue sans dialog on CD 1, original album version on CD 3. Mammoth Silvestri score itself runs nearly 100 minutes across discs 1 & 2, with numerous alternates following on CD 2. Film is scored wall-to-wall with literal smash-up of original score, music bits, songs, Interestingly, majority of original Silvestri cues are heavily truncated in film. Intrada release premieres them in their full-length versions as originally recorded by composer. Eddie Valiant theme in smoky ’noir style’ for solo trumpet plays in balance to sinister Judge Doom theme for low strings with chimes. In between are frantic, dazzling action sequences in signature Silvestri manner for full orchestra, sometimes featuring additional jazz combo of top U.S. players generating further excitement within resources of full London Symphony Orchestra. Danger and excitement become keynote, especially in rousing last half hour! Sexy, sultry vocal number by Jessica Rabbit (“Why Don’t You Do Right?”) another smoky highlight! Alternates include cues written for but dropped from film entirely. But there’s much more! Also appearing are four complete “Cartoon Short” scores featuring Roger Rabbit that appeared in front of subsequent Disney films: Premiere of complete Silvestri score for Who Framed Roger Rabbit’s opening “Maroon Cartoon” with Roger babysitting Baby Herman plus dizzying Bruce Broughton scores for Rollercoaster Rabbit (1990) and Trail Mix-Up(1993) with James Horner score for Tummy Trouble (1989) bringing CD 2 to a close. CD 3 presents original 1988 Disney soundtrack album, preserving Silvestri’s own 46-minute presentation balancing score highlights with songs. Entire release newly mastered from Disney vault elements and presented courtesy of Disney Enterprises and Amblin Entertainment. Digital editing & assembly by Douglass Fake, mastered by Patricia Sullivan at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Informative notes by Tim Greiving, colorful booklet design by Kay Marshall. Special thanks to Roger Feigelson for helping bring vast array of licensing challenges across the finish line! Bruce Broughton cartoons: Armin Steiner records & mixes with Broughton conducting. James Horner cartoon: Shawn Murphy records & mixes with Horner conducting. Who Framed Roger Rabbit cartoon and score: Dennis Sands records & mixes, James Campbell orchestrates, London Symphony Orchestra performs, Alan Sylvestri composes, conducts. Intrada Special Collection 3-CD set available while quantities and interest remains! Link: http://store.intrada.com/s.nl/it.A/id.11361/.f?sc=13&category=-113 CD1 - WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT? 01. 6. Masterworks Broadway is delighted to announce the release of the Original Cast Recording to Back To The Future: The Musical. The musical is staged at the Adelphi Theatre in London’s West End and features new music by multi-Grammy winners Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard alongside hit songs from the movie including The Power Of Love, Johnny B. Good, Earth Angel and Back In Time. Behind this eagerly-anticipated stage show are Producer Colin Ingram (Ghost – The Musical) and Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, the creators of the Back To The Future film trilogy. The show moves to the West End following an out-of-town opening in March 2020 at the Manchester Opera House where it was enthusiastically received by critics and public alike. Roger Bart and Olly Dobson will reprise the roles of ‘Doc Brown’ and ‘Marty McFly’ respectively. Also returning are Hugh Coles as ‘George McFly’, Rosanna Hyland as ‘Lorraine Baines’, Cedric Neal as ‘Goldie Wilson’, Aidan Cutler as ‘Biff Tannen’ and Courtney-Mae Briggs as ‘Jennifer Parker’. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09FZ4DQVN
  7. I just recently ordered The Mummy and Mummy Returns expansions since they’ve come back in stock (I know some people were furious with those releases. Feel free to complain over on those Intrada threads for each score. But my love for these has outweighed my frustration.) Now I had listened to the OST of MR a handful of times since it’s original release. It was always fun. But just a bit… too much. But I was surprised at how the expansion left a decent amount of breathing room between the big action tracks. And the monumental finale starting with “Rick battles Imhotep” is just sheer bananas. Silvestri reprised practically every motif from the entire score in that one cue. I started combing through the score, picking up more of the subtle motifs that eluded me in the OST. Is there a glossary of themes for this one already? Here’s my breakdown (the names are completely my own unless the booklet to the expansion clarified them btw. I also don’t list every instance these themes appear. Just a few examples.) I’d love for someone to take a crack at Goldsmith’s:) 1.Main Hero Theme A- “Evy Kiddnapped” (1:05-1:40) “My First Bus Ride” (7:10-7:27) Pure swashbuckling hero theme for our hero’s. All over the score. Played in bits and pieces or in full. Really makes me wonder what Silvestri wrote for the first Pirates film. 2.Main Hero Theme B- “Evy Kiddnapped” (3:19- 3:33) “My First Bus Ride” (6:17-6:25) “I want Him Back” (0:36-0:48) A victorious heroic B theme seems to play when the good guys win a round. 3.Rick/Evy Love Theme- “Just An Oasis” (0:07-0:33) “Dirigible Montage” (0:00-0:16) Beautiful classic desert vista love theme worthy of Jarre himself. 4.Warrior/Medjai Theme- “Medjai Commanders” OST (0:17-35) “Sand Castles” (:38 -1:38) “The Mummy Returns-End Credits”(0:00-0:47) My absolute favorite theme in this entire score. The booklet refers to this one as a warrior theme. It also seems to be used when there’s a spot of luck or good fortune for our heroes. 5.Imhotep/Anuksunamun Love Theme-“Imhotep Reborn” (1:41-2:03) “The Mushy Part” (1:33-2:00) A mysterious and alluring love theme for the antagonists. 6.Lost Love Theme-“Evy Dies (Comeback Evy)” (1:35-2:09) “Wrong Girlfriend” (0:26-0:54) “Sand Warriors”(1:21-1:50) Big melodramatic theme for doomed lovers. 7.Bad Guy/Evil Motif- “Opening/Legend of the Scorpion King” (2:10-2:33) “Canyon Deluge (We’re In Trouble)”(0:00-0:06,) “Flashback Finale (Evy Remembers)” (2:06-2:16) “Rick Battles Imhotep” (4:24-4:40) Is this a theme for the Scorpion King himself? We only hear a long-lined statement of this theme at the beginning after the SKs defeat. But after that it’s only the first three or four notes. A simple thorny idea kind of like “The Evil of the Ring” motif. Littered all over the underscore . But really stands out near the end. Something the expansion shows off pretty well. 8.Fate/Destiny Chant - “ Evys Flashback Swordfight” ( 1:55-2:26) Flashback Finale (Evy Remembers)” (2:06-2:16) “ Rick Battles Imhotep” (4:40-5:10) “Domine Domine”. You know the one. First played during Evys flashback and culminates with the arrival of a terrible CGI Dwayne Johnson. Seems to be played in tandem with the Bad Guy/Evil motif quite a bit. 9.Mystery/Wonder Motif- “The Bracelet Awakens”(:44-:59) “Rick Battles Imhotep”(2:19-2:27) When ancient powers from “beyond” manifest themselves, this seems to play 10.Mummy Procession/March Motif- “Imhotep Unearthed” (0:16-0:19) “Imhotep Reborn” (:29-1:19) “Train Chapter (Gift and a Curse)” (1:19-1:45) Lurching, rite-like music often accompanies Imhotep or ceremonies (but it can also be heard in portions of “Opening”) 11.Desert Battle Theme - “Opening(Legend of the Scorpion King)” (1:28-2:00) “Rick Battles Imhotep” (1:35-2:10) Chaotic and thunderous war music plays at the beginning of the film during the prologue and the climactic battle at the end. Not sure if this is considered all one theme or a bunch of motifs smooshed together… 12.Fight/Flight action motif- “Flush of Freedom” (1:07-1:19) “Pygmy Attack” (2:07-2:17) “Rick Battles Imhotep” (1:04-1:20) Frantic stomping action motif (reminds me a tad of Wind and the Lion) 13.Creepy crawly motif- “scorpion shoes” (0:00-0:10) “Imhotep Unearthed ost”(0:26-0:38) “False Victory” (1:00-1:08) Aleatoric writing that pops up anytime bugs or spooky gooey situations occur. 14.Panic Motif- “Evy Dies (Comeback Evy)” (0:25-0:43) “False Victory” (0:00-0:10) Siren/alarm string pattern when something terrible is occurring. 15.Big Decisions motif -“ Scorpion Shoes”(0:59-1:23) “Rick battles Imhotep” (3:10-3:40) Seems to play when characters are about to meddle with ancient magic. 16.Dire motif- “Scorpion Shoes” (3:33-3:44), “Evy Kidnnaped” (2:23-2:50) Plays a couple times when our hero’s are in a tight spot throughout the film There’s a handful of other little action motif phrases that pop up here and there all throughout the score. But I think I covered a chunk of them here at least! Silvestri isn’t slavish with his thematic application. And admittedly, he doesn’t tend to vary their instrumentation a ton. But with over a dozen themes/motifs, this score IMO, doesn’t wear out it’s welcome and is his finest adventure score to date. Alan really tapped into something special with this soundtrack and he seemed to have an absolute blast writing for this modern day Harryhausen-esque adventure.

  11. Much like last year when D2 Mastering revealed that the Deluxe Edition of The Abyss was coming before Varese announced it, they have done so again for Predator 2. Source: http://d2mastering.com then click "clients" I cannot WAIT for this - the score is really great but the OST was incomplete and incorrectly mastered. This is gonna be awesome!
  12. Hi All, Omni Music Publishing editor here. I couldn't legally advertise this until now (long story), but the full score to Back To The Future is soon to be released, probably mid-July. Unfortunately, this will be a North America release ONLY, so far. I'm trying to get print permission for world ex. N. America, but to no avail. This has been a tough one, plagued with all sorts of permission issues, and there's a issue with the cover that hasn't been resolved. In the end, it's about the contents, and this is a great score that has some genuine moments of classic film music! Stay tuned . . .

  16. I think that Alan Silvestri is the new veteran in Hollywood and the successor of John Willaims. It's amazing that this man has never got an Oscar.
  17. Finally got around to posting my review of Silvestri's Avengers score. Read it here: http://musicbehindthescreen.blogspot.com/2012/05/quick-review-avengers.html
  18. Haven't written a review in a while, but I'm getting back on track, starting with Alan Silvestri's latest score for the Avengers: http://musicmusekk.wordpress.com/2012/05/10/the-avengers-alan-silvestri/ Enjoy! - KK
