  1. This isn't being officially announced until tonight at midnight PST (3am ET), but the cover art has already leaked So the circle is complete!
  2. I know a few people suggested an official Varese thread along the lines of FSM and Intrada, so I thought I'd make one, especially as there are two new releases on the site, including a new Desplat. THE CRAZIES Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Music Composed by Mark Isham Imagine living in a small town where everything is safe and happy...until suddenly it isn't. Imagine your friends and neighbors going quickly and horrifically insane. In a terrifying tale of the “American Dream” gone horribly wrong, four friends find themselves trapped in their hometown in The Crazies, a reinvention of the George Romero classic directed by Breck Eisner from a screenplay by Ray Wright (Pulse, Case 39) and Scott Kosar (The Amityville Horror, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre). David Dutten (Timothy Olyphant) is sheriff of Ogden Marsh, a picture-perfect American town with happy, law-abiding citizens. But one night, one of them comes to a school baseball game with a loaded shotgun, ready to kill. Another man burns down his own house … after locking his wife and young son in a closet inside. Within days, the town has transformed into a sickening asylum; people who days ago lived quiet, unremarkable lives have now become depraved, blood-thirsty killers, hiding in the darkness with guns and knives. Sheriff Dutten tries to make sense of what's happening as the horrific, nonsensical violence escalates. Something is infecting the citizens of Ogden Marsh … with insanity. Now complete anarchy reigns as one by one the townsfolk succumb to an unknown toxin and turn sadistically violent. In an effort to keep the madness contained, the government uses deadly force to close off all access and won't let anyone in or out -- even those uninfected. The few still sane find themselves trapped: Sheriff Dutten; his pregnant wife, Judy (Radha Mitchell); Becca (Danielle Panabaker), an assistant at the medical center; and Russell (Joe Anderson), Dutten's deputy and right-hand man. Forced to band together, an ordinary night becomes a horrifying struggle for survival as they do their best to get out of town alive. Mark Isham, who amplified the terror in The Mist, provides the chilling score. Overture Films opens The Crazies on February 26. Varèse Sarabande Catalog #: 302 067 009 2 Release Date: 02/23/10 THE GHOSTWRITER Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Music Composed by Alexandre Desplat Ewan McGregor Pierce Brosnan Kim Catrall Olivia Williams The New Film From Roman Polanski THE GHOSTWRITER tells the story of a former British Prime Minister, Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan), who is holed up on an island off the Eastern seaboard of the U.S. in midwinter, writing his memoirs. When his long-standing aide drowns, a professional ghostwriter (Ewan McGregor) is sent out to help him finish the book. The anonymous ghost writer is quickly drawn into a political and sexual intrigue involving Lang’s wife, Ruth (Olivia Williams) and his aide (Kim Cattrall). Hanging over Lang is the threat of a war crimes trial and a mysterious secret from his past that threatens to jeopardize international relations. The cast also includes Jim Belushi, Robert Pugh and Tom Wilkinson. THE GHOSTWRITER is based on the novel The Ghost written by best-selling author Robert Harris. It won the International Thriller Writers’ Award for best novel of 2008. Harris joined director Roman Polanski in adapting the book for the big screen. Academy Award nominee Alexandre Desplat (The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button) has created a suspenseful and captivating work, which recalls the classic thriller scores of the legendary Bernard Herrmann. Summit Entertainment opens THE GHOSTWRITER nationwide on February 19. Varèse Sarabande Catalog #: 302 067 007 2 Release Date: 02/23/10
  3. Check out the official website of D2 Mastering: http://d2mastering.com/ Click "Clients" in the upper left, and scroll down to "Soundtracks/Soundtrack Reissues 2013" BOOM. NOTE: I did not discover this myself, and if I had I would not have publicly posted about it in order to let the specialty labels do their own announcing. This was discovered by ScottDS on FSM and posted there, so I wanted to create a thread to discuss the news here. Again, no disrespect meant to Varese, I did not make this discovery or break this news. See the FSM thread where it broke here: http://filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=98243&forumID=1&archive=0

I am of course super excited that this release is coming out, because it's a great score, and because the OST was so short, and I'm glad there's a market for expanded scores that are only a year old. However, I am a big befuddled by two choices made for the final product here! One is that Giacchino's intended original end credits suite is missing, replaced by the film edit of the end credits. This means the new recording of Spock's Theme is replaced by music tracked in from London Calling and Ode To Harrison like in the film. A big bummer that nice recording won't get a legal release, especially since the full London Calling and Ode To Harrison are on the CD anyway (Ode To Harrison in the very next track!) And secondly is that an entire cue, "Spock to Spock" is missing on this release. That's the music for Spock's conversation with Spock Prime, and featured a great new version of the Vulcan theme. You can here both missing cues in this youtube video (I apologize for not having timestamps handy, but I will try to post them later) Why on earth did <whoever chose to omit these two pieces> omit these two cues? Why!? Why!?

  10. I'm asking for the price you pay in your country for special editions, expansions, complete scores, ... you know what I mean. As far as I can see, on the websites of the labels themselves, there are normally three price ranges: 1CD = normally 19,99$ 2CD = normally 29,99$ 3CD = normally 34,99$ Of course, that's without shipping fees and it's dollars. So what do you have to pay in England, Sweden, Netherlands, Canada, Australia, Pakistan, ... ? I will start with Germany: There are two criteria that normally influence the price - the number of discs and the label's shipping fees. Quartet Records 1CD = 16,95€ = 20,14$ 2CD = 21,95€ = 26,08$ La-La Land 1CD = 22,95€ = 27,26$ 2CD = 36,95€ = 43,90$ 3CD = 49,95€ = 59,34$ Intrada 1CD = 27,95€ = 33,20$ 2CD = 37,95€ = 45,08$ Varese Sarabande 1CD = 34,95€ = 41,52$ 2CD = 42,95€ = 51,02$ It's annoying that you have to pay twice as much for Varese Sarabande as for Quartet, althought the latter is clearly the better special label.

  12. For those worrying that Jackman was in a rut with his terrible blockbuster scores for G.I. Joe Retaliation, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and X-Men: First Class -- he is back in fine form with Pixels. The movie is the usual Adam Sandler garbage, but with Chris Columbus directing, the score is fully orchestral and very enjoyable. Varese Sarabande released the score digitally and physically on the film's release date. https://www.varesesarabande.com/products/pixels
