All John Williams;

in no particular order

E.T.

SUPERMAN

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK

THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST

STAR WARS

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

JAWS

THE FURY

MONSIGNOR (not on CD, but find the LP if you can)

SCHINDLER'S LIST

All Jerry Goldsmith

again in no order

ALIEN

POLTERGEIST

STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE

SUPERGIRL

THE FINAL CONFLICT (the DELUXE edition is a must)

LEGEND

A PATCH OF BLUE

BASIC INSTINCT

THE WIND AND THE LION

HOOSIERS or RUDY (either is a great score)

Some obvious choices

THE MAGNIFICIENT SEVEN - Elmer Bernstein (this one could be a challenge now that Rykodisc has deleted their catalogue. The James Sidares re-recording is quite good, though)

TAXI DRIVER - Bernard Herrmann

ANASTASIA - Alfred Newman

BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS - James Horner (goofy fun)

STAR TREK 2 - James Horner

BRAINSTORM - James Horner (his best work)

A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE - Alex North

GOLDFINGER - John Barry (this one set the standard for all the BOND films after it)

THE PINK PANTHER - Henry Mancini

CHARADE - Henry Mancini (really rare. if you find one on CD, let me know)

Now you can pick and choose from this list and start building a really great cross section of music. As a supplement, I would add, pick up anything by John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein or Henry Mancini... chances are you wont be disappointed.

Big Ken: :( to anyone asking about movie music

good to see someone else mention 1492 :music:

vangelis is amazing.

Why thank you. You are so correct about Vangelis. IMHO the greatest musician of our time.

You didn't finish that post, did you? You forgot to put the emoticon and the "J/K" in there, right?

Vangelis' score for Chariots of Fire beat out the awesome score Raiders of the Lost Ark. But time and history show that Raiders was far better than the Vangelis score. And people barely remember Chariots of Fire from '81. Raiders and On Golden Pond are more memorable.

Joe, who like Chariots the movie, but disliked the score.

Yes, Joe. Unbelievable. I was able to download 2 "Main Theme/Main Title" cues from Grusin's On Golden Pond and I think it's beautiful. I would love to hear the full score.

Of course, I should also watch the film --- which, incidently, was on TV the other day.

"Bullsh*t. That's a good word."

Joe, did you see the live TV version with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer? What did you think?

Dan - who recorded it, never saw it, and recorded over it by accident

Joeinar,

Vangelis is not just a film score composer. He has done much more than soundtracks. He's only done a handful of soundtracks.

Have you heard any of his other works?

I'm not saying that Vangelis is better than JW. They are two totally different types of musicians.

One day, if not already, JW will be held in as high esteem as Beethoven and others.

Vangelis, will be held the same. But not in the same mold. He is an inovator more than anything else. Like JW, often imitated, but never duplicated.

I urge you and others to listen to Vangelis' other works outside of soundtracks. You will thank me later.

Star Wars

ET

Jurassic Park

Schindler's List

The Patriot

Empire Strikes Back

Saving Private Ryan

And three that aren't Williams, but I personally feel are EXCELLENT scores:

The Lion King - Zimmer/Lebo M (Especially "This Land" and the cues with the african vocals)

First Knight - Goldsmith (incredible, all the way through)

Forrest Gump - Silvestri (several absolutley gorgeous themes)

YES!! How could I forget Forrest Gump!! It's a great score.

I, too, loved Zimmer's score to The Lion King. Don't know if it was worthy of an Oscar, but it's still a great score, I think.

And I'm surprised you had Saving Private Ryan in your list, JCM. I think it's one of Johnny's best. It served the film perfectly and it's a harrowing and outstanding musical achievement.

Dan - who has First Knight but hasn't listened to all of it all the way through

I'd have to disagree with you there Joe. Certainly in regard to the British Psyche anyway. Its deep in everyones memory here. Play the famous theme from Chariots here, and people would recognize it immediately as from that film. Probably because its been used heavily in school sports events since then. Hehehe. Plus, because of the culture of the film. I also like 1492, Stewdog. Do you have Vangelis' El Greco and Mask CD'S (not film scores).

1492 was the first CD i ever purchased when moving from tape to CD. :(

Ayahuasca - Who has quite a lot of Vangelis' CD's

Oh yes, I have those two and about 14 others I think.

Excellent list, Harry!

I just tried to include some other composers, but if I had to come up with a Johnny-only list, it would be very similar to Mr. Potter's.

Dan - who started reading Harry's 3rd adventure last night and it already 101 pages in...

Well, not to discredit Johnny or anything, but there are some magical gems of scores out there that are very good.

Dan - who has an eclectic taste in music, as many have pointed out

I've heard others, but I can't get into them. Something about JW which draws me in keeps me hooked on him and doesn't allow me to get into other composers. Strange, but then again, so am I. :)

I'm not talking Horner. Granted, no one will affect you like Johnny does, but other composers really have some nice moments in their stuff.

Marc Shaiman, James Newton Howard, Randy Newman, and Alan Silvestri come to mind right away

Dan - who wants to leave now but will respond to Harry's other questions, leaving his log off point at 660
