Was in Amsterdam again yesterday. I had planned to pick up Gone With the Wind and North by Northwest, but both these CDs were no longer in the shelves where I had previously seen them. So instead, I bought these:

They still had Far and Away, though.

- Marc, who also picked up a neat box set of 10 James Bond novels. About two-thirds through Casino Royale already.

You're in a Menken mood or something? Because it's as far as you can go from Herrmann. Either way, get North by Northwest. I have Rhino version and it's very good, in spite of less than perfect sound quality.

I just received "The Film Music of Richard Addinsell" on CD from the States. I'm a bit p-d off though. I don't like the way the score restoration guy put together the themes for "Goodbye Mr. Chips." This is a venerable soundtrack and should have been played the way it was originally scored, IMHO.

Also, don't forget the vastly better-sounding isolated score on the DVD. It's got quite a few edits, but the sound is stunning.

So the DVD has isolated score on it? I didn't knew that. Maybe I should consider purchasing it... Besides the CD also is edited somehow if I remember correctly. Or at least finale is different from what was originally written.

Well, I went through all soundtracks they had, and this is what came out on top. The Hunchback of Notre Dame was great, so I don't mind sampling some more of Menken's Disney scores. I already love Just Around the Riverbend from Pocahontas.

Mind you, they had many other fine CDs that interested me, but almost all of them were around 20 Euros, and for a casual stop by a record store, I find that rather pricy. Can you believe they still charge 22 Euros for Signs? Nutjobs.

I recently bought this from Movie Music.com...well Peter (the owner) won't be charging my card until I get paid on October 3rd but thought I'd post these anyways.

I also rebought these from Movie Music.com as well, all in the same order. Ignore the "Monsters In Motion" thing on the SeaQuest cover that won't be there. :)

Good choices, Marc. Pocahontas is up there on my list of scores to purchase...I had the casette for years when I was younger.

My most recent purchases were:

and

Horner's The New World is just what I expected, and the reason I bought it. Lots of lush orchestrations, pleasant themes, twinkling pianos, and beautiful horn harmonies. A good companion to Legends of the Fall, if not quite as thematically rich. And surprisingly, I don't really mind the infrequent nature/bird sounds too much, being as inobtrusive as they are.

The Hollywood Sound is a really nice compilation, with stellar performances by Williams and the LSO. "Flying" from E.T. is particularly powerful here....anyone know if this is the same performance as any other compilation CDs? The suite from The Wizard of Oz is really fantastic; I just love that "old Hollywood" sound, and hearing it so clearly with modern recording technology is a real treat. The full, sweeping rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is just wonderful. The biggest surprise for me was "Colors of the Wind" from Pocahontas; you've really never heard it sound anything like this. Hearing it apart from the lyrics, and presented with lovely orchestrations and heart-stirring horn counterpoints during the dark eruptions of the main theme is magnificent. Also, it maintains a distinct Indian feel throughout, which is something I don't think the score itself even does. Highly recommended album!

After falling in love with Medal of Honor: Frontline I felt compelled to go backwards through the lexicon of Giacchino's music. Underground is a lush, romantic score and paints vivid images of France and Italy during the war. I got excited as the first motif heard in the first track was the bold, brassy Nazi theme (based on, but arguably better than the Nazi march from Last Crusade), but the introduction of the main theme for the game left me breathless. It had me at the very first listen, which very very rarely happens to me nowadays - not since The Chamber of Secrets was I so enthralled so soon.

I noticed that a lot of the action music in Frontline heralded back to Williams circa Last Crusade, but there were a few moments in this that were pure classic Williams in the vein of Raiders of the Lost Ark. That said, the best parts of the album are those with Giacchino's own style dominating.

It's obvious that Frontline further develops ideas presented in this score (and presumably the original MOH), and it's enthralling to hear such changes - if not disappointing that I didn't listen to them chronologically. Which reminds me, I'll have to get my hands on the original MOH now!

Maybe it's not as memorable as Signs or The Village, but it's a solid score. I spoted some secondary theme from Dances in the Wolves in it and it has pretty standard Shyamalan sound, but it doesn't hurt it much. Nicely developed motifs (I wouldn't call them themes.) lead to grand and satisfying finale and yet the whole score is still restrained. Howard has somewhat matured as a composer and I like what he's doing recently. And it's a neat album, not too short and not too long. Recommended.

Karol, who has no interest in songs at the end of the CD.

Where'd you get Shore's Soul of the Ultimate Nation?

Is it any good?

Well, I really don't know. It was a gift.

Anyway, it's good. I have listened to it only once. Not as memorable as LOTR, but similar in overall feel. Few lighter tracks, just constant LOTR-like battle music, occasionally with chorus. I hoped for more theremin in this one, but it is in only three tracks or so. Pity. Too dark to be really enjoyable, but it is Howard Shore after all, so it was to be expected. Solid performance and so so sound quality (read: wet LOTR sound). The true merit of this CD is that works more like a symphonic tone poem than a score so it is well developed throughout. I'd recommend it, but wouldn't expect too much.

SOUL is the second best new release I bought this year (X-Men 3 is first)

SOUL might be still the best release this year, but X3 surely isn't. But then again, there weren't many outstanding releases this year and it appears that this trnd will continue. Until November 7th, if you know what I mean.

Karol, who thinks that ROTK wasn't as wet (as far as he can remember).

i never claimed it was the best release of this year I said it was the best new release I have bought.

SOUL and the LOTR scores actually sound like they were recorded in an enviroment, scores like X-men 3 sound too clean, like any character in the sound field was processed out by big a huge computer.

A nice album. Some of the tempos are very different from the film recordings, but they work really well for this recording. I don't know why Arthur Benjamin's "Storm Clouds Cantata" (from The Man Who Knew Too Much) is one here - did Herrmann arrange it for the remake? - but it's nice to have it.

Recommend - especially so if you can find it for £2.99, like I did. :(

It's a great piece, and a great recording. I can't compare it to the one in the 1956 film, since I haven't seen that in ages, but Bernstein's version sounds much better than the one from the 1934 original film.

Medal of Honor: European Assault

I listened to the previews of this on iTunes a few months ago and I loved the main theme, just decided to buy it, and I don't regret it. Lennertz has his own sound while giving slight nods to Giacchino's work. That main theme is also just gorgeous.

I've gotten a bit deeper into Jerry Goldsmith lately, since I always neglected him a bit.

I bought the recording with the LSO that he conducted, with all kinds of themes and suites.

Plus, I got Star Trek Insurrection and Star Trek The Motion Picture.

I'm very impressed by the way!

I've also ordered Naked Lunch and Godzilla Vs. King Kong, but that will arrive with my TTT Complete Recordings.

Godzilla Perfect Box #4

About those "perfect" boxes... well... are they? :) I have the Lalaland Godzilla and King Kong vs. Godzilla CDs, and I'd love to have some more - are they worth it, do you think, or are there reasonable (read cheaper) alternatives?

It is a very good North score and the Goldsmith piece is one of the most beautiful pieces of music he's written.

Yes and no. The sets are fantastic but the bonus discs to me are a disappointment. It looks like some of the pre-announced bonus discs aren't going to be included, which is ok because I have most of them already and so far the onces they have included are just copies of older LPs that contain songs and cue already on the scores.

The packaging is fantastic, the covers of the discs contain head shots of Godzilla as he appears in each film. Some of the discs have more material on them compared to older releases.

Here is the best place to look for reviews and an in depth description:

I just got Alfred Hitchcock Presents.... Signatures in Suspense this morning.

Wow! I didn't realise exactly what's on this disc - I bought it for the OST recording of Family Plot's theme, as well as to hear the Tiomkin & Goodwin themes, but I didn't realise it had original soundtrack recordings from the rejected Torn Curtain score as well! Being a Herrmann fan, I have no idea how I didn't find out about this earlier (I thought the TC tracks were re-recordings). Nice to have a legit version of some of the original Marnie tracks, too. I should get the Tsunami CD of that at some point. The packaging of the CD is interesting.
