I have that set as well. Mostly for the first two and I thought I would get the third one as well at some point. Buying the box set was cheaper than buying the three seperately. Unfortunately that also means I now have Batman & Robin in my collection.

I tried to watch that movie once. It was... unpleasant. :o

I don't want to beat a dead mule, but I knew that something was going terribly wrong during Batman & Robin in the first action sequence, when Mr. Freeze froze Robin, and then said something like, "In eleven minutes Robin will die! You have a choice: chase after me, or save your friend!"

And I'm thinking to myself at that point, "Mr. Freeze, how about if you just freeze both of them, and then the movie is over?!"

I knew there was something terribly wrong when Batman's verbal introduction to the villain was, "Hi, Freeze. I'm Batman."

:o

And my most recent purchase was Napoleon Dynamite, 2-disc edition.

Funny movie.

~Sturgis

Yeah, and the new extended scenes/outtakes are interesting. None of the new stuff has topped the kickball scene for deleted material that should have made the final cut, but it's interesting, and I loved getting to see that outtake where Jon Heder swallowed wrong with the Gatorade at the fridge (referenced in the original commentary).

I understand it's a love-or-hate kind of film. It seems that it's rare that someone is just kind of "okay" with it. I'm not sure what it is about that people hate specifically, though. Is it the randomness, do they find the characters annoying instead of funny...?

I just found it rather boring. I appreciate how "artsy" it was, and I did enjoy parts of it, but it was rather forgettable, and nothing was laugh out loud for me.

It had funny parts, I particularly thought Unlce Rico hitting Napoleon in the face with the stake was funny. Also, Pedro's "gang" shaking their heads at the bully stealing the bike was hilarious. But other than those parts, it simply wasn't funny or rather interesting. It's probably one of the most overrated films in the past years.

I also found it kind of "blah" after my first viewing. But after seeing it again I enjoyed it more, and that continued with the next few viewings. The random awkwardness of it all just grew on me.

Ray Barnsbury - who particularly likes Deb's strange uptight run

Hmm...Interesting. I think Ray indirectly hit on something there with the comment about Deb's "run." A lot of the humor comes not from actual jokes or inherently humorous things, but from the nuances of the characters and the oddities and everything. There is situational humor, though, like Lyle the farmer, the cow, and the bus full of children.

Ben - who had never thought of Napoleon Dynamite as artsy.

Artsy meaning it's not like the typical film of today, with no special affects shots, those brilliant main titles, etc.

I think this thread is becoming more like the "What Was The Last Film You Watched" thread.

Wow, my order from Play.com just got here - impressive when compared against the three weeks and a half they took to ship me a single book in April.

-Tom, who thinks few things feel better than adding new shiny titles to his DVD shelf and looking at the new outlook for a few short seconds.

Amazon blu-ray sale! What does that mean? Shopping galore.

Got Speed and Broken Arrow for $20 each. Just received my Close Encounters Ultimate Edition today, only $23, which is actually cheaper than the standard DVD price. Looking forward to ordering The Patriot for only $14, and maybe Phone Booth or Superbad for $20.

Ha, and people said blu-ray was expensive...

Ha! I know what you mean. Also, when I get new DVDs, I tend to try to wait until I've at least watched the feature, if not all the special features as well, before officially adding them to the collection.

And my most recent purchase was Napoleon Dynamite, 2-disc edition.

That's 90 minutes of my life I'll never get back.

Only 10 minutes of my life. I determined within that period that whatever humour was supposed to be in this film I just wasn't getting at all, and promptly did something else.

I haven't bought anything recently - been catching up with some previous TV - BBC's Robin Hood (brilliant, brilliant show), Torchwood, etc.

I just had the most amazing discovery at Best Buy. Apparently this just came out this week, and I had no idea, I heard nothing about this. Something I've been waiting for years for:

51jCiDcjYML._SS500_.jpg

Two commentary tracks. Deleted scenes. An hour long documentary. The audio recording of the team's read through of the original 110 minute draft (cut to 93 min. for the final film).

Heh, that would have happend to me too if all the copies of the bare bones release hadn't vanished from our store shelves a few months ago (should have been the first indication something was up, I guess). But it was only $19.99, and well worth it.

Yep it was released this past week, I'm glad I never got around to buying the original version yet.

Recent purchases:

The Life Of Brian

Patton

Tora! Tora! Tora!

Blue Harvest

El Cid

Ben Hur

With the exception of the read-through, most of that stuff was on the Criterion DVD. Which fortunately I never got around to buying. ;)

Haven't bought any movies lately, I'm still working my way through the stuff I picked up in the January sales.

Er, that's still up in the air. :)

I rented it years ago, and my memory is: good story, nice moments, a bit slow and plodding, but beautiful to look at. I was listening to the score during my full Williams run and really, really wanted to see the movie again so I took the plunge. It was only 10 bucks at Circuit City.
