Best Christmas Music

Recommended Posts

Well, according to Macys, the holiday season has officially begun! Here are my favorite Christmas CDs, in order from favorite to least:

+ a Nutcracker CD whose image I can't find on google.

I also consider the following cues Christmassy, but not the entire scores:

- What's This (Nightmare Before Christmas)

- Father Christmas (Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe)

- Call of the Champions (American Journey)

- Harry's Wondrous World (SS)

- Entry Into The Great Hall And The Banquet

- Hogwarts Forever and The Moving Stairs

And these from iTunes:

- Sleigh Ride

- Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer

- Winter Wonderland

- Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town

I think this year is my first year where I'm really into scores enough to listen to something particular for the holidays. I don't know why I never did before because I've been into scores for most my life.

Nonetheless, this Christmas season I shall listen to Home Alone I & II and....err I can't think of any other scores that I have that are Christmas-y.

Speaking of the Home Alone music, on our local news station here for CBS they were doing some sort of story regarding Christmas and I kid you not for a brief moment I heard a clip from the Home Alone score. I thought it was weird and that's why it stuck out at me.

Nightmare Before Christmas

Home Alone

Other than that I just download certain christmas songs off of itunes. Normally Bing Crosby, Nat "king" Cole, Johnny Matthis, all the classics. I cant stand most of the new stuff out there with the female vocalist totally D-E-S-T-R-O-Y-I-N-G the songs. Especially songs like "O holy night" and other religious pieces.

I like a lot of the more religious songs although I agree that the wrong vocalist can kill them. Not a religious song, but I heard a version of I'm a Believer totally crucified by a weird vocalist who seemed to be more groaning than singing.

And I went to a small concert last Saturday (I was a loyal churchgoer up until I went to uni so the religious/choir type of music can mean a lot to me) with the local ecumenical orchestra and a soloist, and some beautiful pieces were played like In Christ Alone, and I immediately went on an online search for them.

I don't consider Edward Scissorhands to be a Christmas score.

Why?

It just doesn't sound Christmasy in the same way Home Alone or The Nutcracker would. I consider it more to be a fairy tale score.

John Barry's THE COTTON CLUB.....wait that's not Christmasy....hang on....oh yes THE SOUND OF MUCUS...on very fricking Christmas on TV together with "Willy Wonka and his frigging Chocolate Factory"

Hm, gotta check out that A Charlie Brown Christmas thing. :)

You defenetly should, it is my favorite Christmas album. I think they recently released a new one with alternate tracks or something, I was debating over whether I should get it or not.

I'm a fan of the Charlie Brown Christmas music as well.

Yes, a truly spectacular album :P

It was, I saw it in the store the other day. There's three alternates I think, not worth it if you have the previous release IMO.

"Home Alone" and "A Charlie Brown Christmas" are my favorites.

Tchycovsky's "Nutcracker" is very good as well.

I got another pretty good one that I bet very few of you have heard--Mark Snow's "Ernest Saves Christmas".

If you can't find the rare score to listen to it by itself, pay closer attention to it in the movie, it's great holiday music!!

Phil Driscoll's Heaven and Nature Swing is probably my favorite Christmas album of all time. Now, I do have quite a bit of nostalgia for it, but it really gives me that Christmas feeling, and the jazz orchestrations are fantastic. I highly recommend it.

My favorite Christmas music are the traditional songs and old favorites recorded many years ago by the likes of Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby to name a few.

I cannot, repeat cannot stand these songs sung by today's so called musical talent.

But the albums that I love to play during the holidays are:

The original Alvin & the Chipmunks, still great after all these years.

Charlie Brown's Christmas

Blizzard

Miracle On 34th Street - Bruce Broughton

Home Alone and Home Alone II

Die Hard

Both Williams Boston Pops Christmas CDs

On Her Majesty's Secret Service

Ben Hur

King Of Kings

Since we're on the subject of Christmas music, what are your favorite Christmas songs/carols (aside from film music)? My two favorites would probably be "Sleigh Ride" and "O Holy Night" (fun and reverent, respectively). I also love "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen"; that chord progression is so richly moving.

Working through too many Christmas seasons in a retail job, with the torment of hearing over the store's speakers all of those washed up bands fulfilling their contractual obligations by putting out a tired Christmas album.... well, I now hate Christmas. Anyways, where I live, there are no sleigh rides, no snow, no real mistletoe, no chestnuts, etc. When I listen to holiday music, it's as if I'm listening in on a signal from another planet! For me, it's thick fog in the mornings and evenings, and that's about it.

But back to music. You can't beat Charlie Brown, and though I know this may not count as Christmas music, I always find myself listening to Tchaikovsky around this time.

Now, what about the worst cover of a Christmas song EVER?! I imagine I've heard it.

That's the most depressing thing I've read in a long time. Surely you can look beyond your experiences in commercialism and find the true joys of the season, in spending time with family and friends, giving to those less fortunate than you, reflecting on any personal faith?
