Maybe in the 90s. Hard (and inauthentic to be fair) to try and keep that image going when you’re a multi-millionaire in your 50s.

I always play up the “holiness” or “royalty” thing myself though.

It's close to but not quite the trademark Purdie Shuffle, but my personal favorite Steely Dan song with a classic Purdie performance is "Sign in Stranger."

I only just heard "Feel it Still", the breakout single from Portugal the Man (I refuse to indulge his whimsical punctuation).

It's infectious as hell.

I like Pulp but they have an over inflated reputation because “oasis or blur? Nah mate, Pulp!”

Oasis > Everythibg.

Was at the Belfast gig the night before this. Terrific.

I've got a lot of time for Gallagher Senior ... he wears his immense fame very, very lightly IMO.

I’ve seen him solo 7 times now. He’s great!

That one was either my 3rd or 4th time (stupid memory, lol) ... saw Oasis a couple of times and Liam in his Beady Eye days, too.

'Who Built The Moon?' is probs the High Flying Birds' best album to date, IMHO.

Haha, leave it to Alex Turner to create melody around the lyrics “Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino.” After many listens, I’ve officially been drawn to the album’s bizarre spacey soundscape. First half of the album flows really well but I seem to never reach last three songs. Gives me Bowie vibes, ala “Starman.”

Seems to be the only single off the album at this point. It’s the only one officially on YouTube, which is why I just linked to the Spotify playlist. Songs 1-4 are aces, in my opinion.

I loved their debut. The follow up was a massive disappointment. The third one jus bored me. Not bothered with them since.

Don't know what thread to post this in, but this song really touches me, almost to tears.

Steely Dan is one of those things, like Joni Mitchell and Michael Jackson, where the music and lyrics create such a powerful confluence, both pushing the other to greater heights than either element by its lonesome.

One of my favorites!  Funny you should mention Michael Jackson, the sound of the horn section in that song always reminded me of Quincy Jones-era MJ productions.

The singles do indeed bear the marks of a lot of talent.

Now, have you heard anything of Tiffany besides I Think We're Alone Now?

She had a good deal of voice, I think.

Wait, Supergrass was more than just a one-hit wonder?  Pumping In Your Stereo is the only song by them I've ever heard.  Is that song indicative of their whole discography?

I was not expecting "Pumping in Your Stereo" when you said one-hit wonder!  By far their most popular song is "Alright" (5.5 million Youtube views to 800k or so for "Pumping")

They're one of the best, most fun British rock bands of the late-90s/early-00s and I love all of their albums!

Here's a great song from the album I indicated as their finest in the thread above

Sweet thanks; Just clicked play on the Alright video and I recognize it - probably heard it on Lucy/Lithium over the years.  Definitely never would have guessed it was the same band as Pumping In Your Stereo.  That one I saw the video on MTV one day, back in the day, and figured it was some new band's debut single.  Never knew they had already been around a while.  Guess they never caught on in New England cause I've never heard them on FM radio

It’s a bit like how “Song 2” was a hit but sounded nothing like anything else Blur ever recorded

I love that song, don't think I've ever heard another Blur song to know what the rest sound like.  Well, I've probably heard a few on Lucy / Lithium without realizing it, but I don't think they got any play on FM radio around here

Tiffany Darwish, who had a couple of years of fame in the late 80s as a teenage pop singer.  Solid voice.  This particular song did not chart, but it should have.

Listening to Robert Plant's last album again this afternoon.  He has yet to release a less-than-stellar album this century.  Always an interesting, restless artist.  Puts the other classic rockers still kicking to shame.

Never listened to his solo work. Is it that good? I love Zeppelin and can’t imagine it ever comparing.

It's different!  You need to be able to listen without constantly comparing, because Plant very much is able to explore his interest in American/British folk and "world music" influences to his heart's content. He's able to just make music without even caring about if people think it's as good as Zeppelin.  I think it's great.

Personally I think everyone should start with the 2002 album Dreamland.  It's my personal favorite.

Celebrating the birthday of underrated bassist, guitarist, singer and songwriter Michael Steele today.   Many career highlights, from The Runaways to The Bangles and beyond.  (Maybe we need a Michael Steele thread :P).

A lot of character on the bass for this song, from power pop outfit Elton Duck:

Singing lead on a solid cover:

Very moody number that Steele wrote, sang, and, evidently, played guitar on:

Steele’s masterpiece:

Poetically interesting song she wrote… stay tuned for her Bowie impression:

Harmonic tour de force from The Bangles on this song:

Thanks, I’ll definitely check it out. Just rummaging through his solo work now and I’ve discovered that he reunited with Page for an unplugged album. Ye gods, how did I never know this existed?

This has been my favorite Blue Oyster Cult song for years and I can't get it unstuck from my head for the past hour or so.  I haven't even listened to it in months!
