I like it, but in the meantime I will be listening to those 2 albums he did with Jimmy Page. Why is he so opposed to a reunion tour again?

As I understand it he wants to be the frontman, the bandleader, and in charge of all his own creative decisions.  He seems to just not be interested in that creative collaboration anymore.  I can respect that.  Personally, I'm not a huge fan of those 2 records but they are interesting curios of the Led Zeppelin legacy.  But that's really all they are to me.

I thought it was because he didn’t consider it Zeppelin without Bonham. But then I learn he went back to Page for 2 albums :P

He was in tears of that performance of Stairway To Heaven with Jason at that honorary ceremony. I think he just holds a lot of pain from those times.

And he strikes me as a bit of a restless soul in interviews, doesn’t give a crap about glory days and all that.  A rolling stone that gathers no moss.

XTC is, possibly, the best kept secret, in English pop.

And, according to the rockumentary, that's exactly how that fans want it be ... A secret!

I love XTC.  Black Sea is my favorite album, personally.  Still has the youthful exuberance of the early records, but with a bit more of the pop refinement of what came after.  The perfect balance for me.

And the Holiest Text.  All Hail Teenage Fanclub

Wow Stu, thanks for this.  One of the best albums I've heard in a while.  Thought I'd just take a listen to a couple of tracks, but every song on here is a winner.

Great character on the bass lines, great melodies, very nice guitar parts.  Vocals and harmonies strong, too.

By the way, have you ever listened to The Bangles' first lp, All Over The Place?  Some good stuff on there.

I have to admit I've only ever had the Bangles' Greatest Hits compilation.  That's a great record!  haha :D

They're a great band and certainly up my alley in terms of being folk-rock indebted guitar pop.

And yeah, Teenage Fanclub are one of my three favorite bands of all time.  I've been lucky enough to see them live twice (they don't tour very often).

Ah, yes, the compilation is a strong one.  Has the superior version of "I'll Set You Free" from Everything   All it's really missing is the Michael Steele penned "Something to Believe In."

I put on that Bangles record while I cooked supper tonight and boy that's good stuff.  I definitely hear the Teenage Fanclub connection.  Bright, ringing, strumming guitars with head boppin' steady beats.  That's like my "home" sound.

I love Roy Orbison, but I'm very happy with just The Monument Singles Collection compilation I got 5 or 6 years ago.  Don't really feel the need to dig deeper.

I always suspected that this set don't shows all the mono original Masters. They introduced some alternates and I suspect, sometimes, they just took some stereo versions and just downthem to to mono. I always felt tis release was a racket. It was made to surf on the Beatle "true" mono sets, but not with the same rigour.

Anyway, there is absolutely no reason to listen to these songs in mono.

The current compilations you should get a those two ones:

Haha, leave it to Alex Turner to create melody around the lyrics “Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino.” After many listens, I’ve officially been drawn to the album’s bizarre spacey soundscape. First half of the album flows really well but I seem to never reach last three songs. Gives me Bowie vibes, ala “Starman.”

Seems to be the only single off the album at this point. It’s the only one officially on YouTube, which is why I just linked to the Spotify playlist. Songs 1-4 are aces, in my opinion.

I've no bloody clue where to put this, I guess there's no official alternative music thread, I allow this to be moved to a better spot if there is one.

Budapest Bár is a unique group - a small traditional gypsy band (cimbalom, contrabass, accordion, drumset, keyboard, guitar, and of course violin - there's only 5 players, so they switch instruments when the song needs them to) and as singers, a bunch of well- or not so well-known underground and alternative artists who are in a rotation based on who's available or in the area - there's 11 singers and a few irregulars, and there's usually anywhere between 2 and 6 of them at one concert. They play anything from resurrected 1890's café tunes,  popular 30s swing, 50s lovey-dovey dance tunes (mostly Hungarian so far), to Beatles, Bowie and Michael Jackson, all converted to their wide but unique and recognizeable style, with lately having more and more original songs written for the band by the singers.

I also believe they're damn unique in that they can create a more than 10-minute medley of two traditional Jewish instrumentals, with almost completely improvised solos, and have any crowd on free outside or expensive paid concerts go wild. Here's last night's recording (excuse the phone recording quality, I had to also shield it from the wind) - even if you're not that interested based on my description, you must at least listen to the portion from 5:10! (Hedwig's Theme on the cimbalom!):

The middle, the transition from Zemer Atik to Dancing with the Rabbi was cut off, but I think I mended it pretty well.

How'd it turn out? I didn't realize it was so sexy as a kid, though. I only heard it in the car.

My peak of listening to Top 40 radio was 1996 - 1999.  Then I became mostly a classic rock loving kid, later discovering a love for indie and experimental rock

Don’t think I ever listened to Top 40, but my path wasn’t dissimilar. Thankfully my parents started me on The Beatles early!

I forgot to comment here about the two new songs that Paul McCartney released in June.  I actually really like both of them!  They've been getting a fair bit of play from me for the past month.
