Then you really should check out JCVD (2008).

You only like him cuz he's Belgian!

Is BB Belgian?  I thought he might be Swedish, but I'd believe Belgian.

Not at all, but JCVD surprised even the haters. Read the RT quotes:

And be enlightened.

Why are you assuming I wasn't familiar with JCVD the film?  Would it suprise you to know that I've seen it?  I did, and thought it was ok and not worth remembering.

The Paul Thomas Anderson-Daniel Day Lewis fashion film has a title and synopsis

Phantom Thread

Quote

Set in the glamour of 1950s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock’s life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love. With his latest film, Paul Thomas Anderson paints an illuminating portrait both of an artist on a creative journey, and the women who keep his world running.

Like basically all PTA films, its success hangs on the execution, the writing and performances, not the plot.

I love his older films but still haven't seen The Master or Inherent Vice

The Phantom Thread has been the title for a while I think

He's under the assumption he wrote some kind of write-up about It Follows when he first saw it here, but he never did.

A PTA synopsis is useless. You never know what exactly you're going to get until you've seen it.

Which is exactly what I said.

When was that?

It was a unique Cremers revelation!

Dysfunctional characters fighting their inner demons based movies, to be more precisely.

PTA movies are mainly character driven.

Hope this helps,

Paul Thomas Anderson has yet to make a movie that is "complete pants" so the odds are in its favor.  Then again, even the best directors stumble eventually, perhaps it is his time.

For more than just a few loyal followers that already happened with Inherent Vice. Are those the same people that hope the return of Daniel Day-Lewis will give birth to a new There Will Be Blood?

I see a lot of the same themes from There Will Be Blood and The Master at play here, but in the context of a love story. Looks good.

I have faith in PTA!

Probably in the beginning, yes, but as the movie progresses, the camera will be only interested in close-ups of the characters' faces. It's like PTA wants to get into their heads while neglecting the surroundings they find themselves in. You'll see...

If you're referring to The Master, I think that worked very well for that film. And to date, remains his most beautiful looking work.

Still disapointed in The Master?

That film has aged really well for me. Fascinating stuff.

Inherent Vice, on the other hand... I should probably give it another chance at some point.

An actor's face is the most interesting landscape of all :D

You must love TV, where actors' faces is all you see.

I still don't have fond memories of the second half.

Leone had a knack for finding actors with the most interesting faces. Nothing wrong with close-ups, as Leone proved time and time again.

Poster's good too.

Interesting approach, going text only.

Not as noted for extreme closeups, but the Coens also find weird interesting faces especially for rounding out bit parts (but also hire character actors in main roles too of course).

Apparently The Snowman is really bad and Alfredson is even admitting as much, trying to explain what went wrong.  Very sad.  I hope he bounces back quickly with another one, the wait after Tinker Tailor was so long for his followup to be bad :(

Apparently they forgot to film 10 to 15% of the script.

Film has 8% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Geostorm, which would have been a total hit 10 years ago, is another huge flop for Warner Brothers. It seems the only thing that is not failing these days is Disney (superheroes and Star Wars).
