Zelda: Ocarina of Time Reorchestrated

Recommended Posts

While I'm not a fan of using imaginary words in titles of projects, the musicality of this is rather impressive... The "Zelda Reorchestrated" team has just completed their Ocarina of Time album: every single piece of music from Ocarina of Time rendered with modern synthesizers and samples. For those bothered by the very dated sound hardware of the N64, this can really illuminate the strength of Koji Kondo's work. Some of the tracks are too embellished or orchestrally overdone, but for the most part the tracks are faithful to the originals and sound great. The only one that really horrifies me is "Battle," which is given the Zimmer treatment.

Hyrule Field Main Theme

Zelda's Theme

Kakariko Village Orchestral Version

Cool, thanks Henry. I think I remember hearing about this project a while ago. The old synth samples don't bother me any, but this sounds like something worth checking out.

John- who also has to strongly disagree with KM

OoT has its highlights and introduces a number of great themes, but I always found the orchestration underwhelming... the sound of it was too small, on the whole I found it to be too sparse and thin, especially compared to "A Link to the Past", although the samples themselves sounded better. LttP had a much more grand and epic, orchestral feel to it, limited as the SNES samples were. Both the Wind Waker and Twilight Princess have a more grand orchestration and convey the epic wonder of the world better ;) Though OoT shines on a more intimate, chamber musical scale (the "Hyrule Symphony" CD with string arrangements is gorgeous).

Hmmm,I think this and Final Fantasy are way overrated.

and yes,I spent 2 weeks thrudging through all the available FF material

Of course you do, it's not Williams, therefore it has to be overrated like that crappy Back To The Future score.

Well at least spent the time listening to it to give my opinion

there's a few good themes, for what I assume are female characters (tina.tifa,aerith...I dunno I haven't played the games). But a lot of it is repetitious

Haven't changed my mind about BttF...but I did Under-rate Innerspace

But you do know that "not liking" is not equal to overrated? As for it being repetitious, it's music for a videogame, considerably longer than a film score and it also has to be functional in the game so a bit of repetition is to be expected.

That's why I love the "on the fly" Playlist button on the ipod so I can re-listen to the best tracks later on without re-listening to the 4 hour scores

I already have symphonic arrangements of Ocarina of Time (I did play this great game)...wouldn't that be automatically be better than midis? It's called "Hyrule Symphony"

If I remember correctly the "Hyrule Symphony" is mostly just an ensemble of strings, so these midis give you an idea of what the full orchestra would sound like.

It's a small string ensemble, like a quartet or something. Though in one track an actual ocarina is featured as well.

Anyway, these are great. It reinforces what I already know about the Zelda music, that it's collectively as good as anything I've heard. The fact that it was written for video games instead of movies makes no difference, it's brilliant all the same.

Kondo, Uematsu & co have written such godlike stuff, not for no reason this music has a huge fanbase and there are concerts around the world. So sorry but you are talking bullshit.

Please have a listen to these ones:

John Williams! I knew it!

I really don't think it's John Williams at all. It's from Orchestral Game Concert Volume 1 by the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra (My link). One YouTube commentator said that Williams arranged it, but I can't find it mentioned anywhere in the CD Liner notes. Unless somebody here knows something that I don't? Still fabulous sounding though.

Haha, no, it's one of the oldest jokes from this board that Williams arranged that piece.

That's great ROTFLMAO

I remember back in 2002 seeing it as "JOHN WILLIAMS LEGEND OF ZELDA" on Kazaa. So it's like they hyped it by throwing a popular name on it. I believe something similar happened on Kazaa/Limewire/Whatever when the score for Revenge Of The Sith was "leaked" and it was actually Shadows Of The Empire. Funny thing was my friend actually bragged to me about it when he downloaded SOTE. He was so happy to one-up me on Star Wars that he didn't know it wasn't the ROTS score.

Back in the early days of file sharing, Napster, quite a few movie themes were attributed to John Williams.

Back in the glory days of file sharing, I attributed a rock song to myself for my friends to seek on Napster. It didn't work very well, it was almost as if we were on different servers and could not search from the same pool of files.
