Close Encounters - LLL

In 2 months, this score went from "haven't ever listened to it outside the movie which I only saw once" to probably one of my Top5 Williams scores, if I would keep such a list (which I don't).

It's a marvelous score that reveals more and more about itself with every listen

Pee-wee's Big Adventure, by Danny Elfman :music:

A lot of fun! A great score to listen to while going on a bike ride.

Hard to believe this guy went from composing masterpieces like this to garbage like Justice League.

Arguably it is the very peak of Williams's work, the essential synthesis of his cinematic instincts and his concert sensibilities.

In a fairer world it would be programmed alongside the greatest 20th Century masterworks.

Krull - James Horner

Horner's masterwork, no matter how much you guys prefer The Rocketeer, Wrath of Khan or his glossy Oscar fare. No matter how much I listen to it, it continues to draw me in. The main theme, the overly rapturous love theme, and the highlight cue "Ride of the Firemares."

It is truly fine narrative scoring.

As you may or may not be aware, I am an LAian.  Some people call us a race of listeners, we...listen.  Right now Mr. McCarthy, you have my complete attention.  I want to listen to everything you know about Star Trek Generations.

On a good day, he's quite moving. On a bad day, he can be insufferable.

To explain, I spent most of the day working away at my thesis assignment, and when Born Free came on, it was really working for me. I was in the mood for more sugary Barry sap, so I went through the whole roster. I may have overdone it though as the day just started to move in slow motion.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, by Howard Shore :music:

It's serviceable. Not a lot of new material here; largely a rehash of the previous two scores, but all in all, a satisfying final musical entry from Shore. "Sons of Durin" is magnificent.

**** out of *****

E.T. (20th anniversary edition)

always tickled by the use of Yoda's Theme in "The Magic of Halloween". As with Close Encounters, to me, has that sense of wonder about the cosmos/aliens etc and helping to make [aliens] seem real. One day I'll get around to the recent release of the score.

Well Yoda's Theme is here because we actually see Yoda in that scene.  :)

Battle Royale :music:

Much more tonal than I was expecting.  Not a big fan of the tracking of classical pieces into the album but there are a handful of well-written sentimental melodies (which I've been missing from new Hollywood film scores).  The action music is solid too, very Goldsmithian in parts.

Ha I know. Just the fact that JW used it all the same seems cool even now.

Why does Yoda look more like a monk here? I know it's a costume but I can't shake the image out of my head.

It was during that detour he took on his way into exile on Dagoboah.

It's the chintzy robe and weird scale. The mask is on-point.
