What Is The Last Score You Listened To? (older scores)

Rambo 1, 2, and 3 - Goldsmith

Solo by - Powell

The Incredibles - Giacchino - Lots of fun. It's cool to see Giacchino back in his 60's jazz mode again, with even less Barry influence this time. I especially like Elastigirl's theme.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - Giacchino - Really enjoying this. Awesome monster music. The new theme is a lot more interesting melodically then his previous Jurassic World theme. There are tracks I can ommit, but it's a solid album too.

I have been on a HUGE David Arnold Bond kick this weekend after some recent discussion of him round these parts.

I have listened to his 3 Brosnan scores and Casino Royale at least three times each over the past few days and they remain Arnold's peak to my ears.  I have to admit I'm not as big on his last one.  I'd certainly be interested to know why @crocodile loves QoS so much.  A score that once again made not much impression on me when I listened to it today.

God of War by Bear McCreary: This one was a very nice surprise and still continues to impress in the dramatic scoring department and thematic writing and development while the action is often a bit too heavy handed modern rhythmic beating for my tastes. I reiterate that the choral and soloist work is quite excellent, sung in Old Norse by both the Icelandic Schola Cantorum and City of Prague Philharmonic Choir with the Faroe Islander soloist Eivør Pálsdóttir.

Journey by Austin Wintory: There is something almost meditative about this score which is a perfect blend of atmosphere and melody. Wintory's sinuous main theme, most often voiced by cello, carries the whole effort and goes through endless permutations and culminates in the wonderfully fluid and suitably named Apotheosis. The end credits song I Was Born for This is intoned by the great vocal talent Lisbeth Scott and it is based on the main theme but actually remains one of my favourite songs of its kind.

Oh it just reqires a certain level of intelligence and a...quantum of sophistication on listener's part. Don't be too hard on yourself. ;)

I just find textures interesting as well it's rich motivic writing that's unlike pretty much anything in Bond franchise. Also the lower brass. ♥️

I LOVE Tomorrow Never Dies, and to a lesser extent Casino Royale, and to a lesser extent The World Is Not Enough, and to a lesser extent Die Another Day.  I've tried listening to Quantom of Solace many times and cannot get into it for the life of me, every time the album is over I can't remember a damn thing about it.

Die Another Day has grown on me considerably since the LLL release.  I've listened to it a lot.  It's definitely still too much score and overblown.  But it's really entertaining, lots of fun.

Arnold clearly put a lot of effort into it!  I like all the alternates the LLL release provides, like getting some stuff with way less electronics.

I've become quite fond of some of those synth percussion heavy tracks.  "White Out" and the two car chase cues are great.

I don't want every Bond score to sound like that or anything, but I enjoy them for what they are.  Very 90s, despite being from 02.

It's kind of the culmination of the orchestra/electronic hybrid sound he started with TND.  I was very glad, however, that he "reset" things with Casino Royale.

I get annoyed by QoS the movie and the score because they held back on the Bond theme again and I think it was a mistake.  The arc of the Casino Royale score/movie was that by the end he had become James Bond, Iconic Movie Spy with Iconic Theme, and they saved the big blowout arrangement of that theme for the end.  Then in the next movie they....just do that again?

I know right?  One of the many many problems with QOS (the film)

That the Bond theme isn't used in QoS, isn't a problem, with me, as the film is not really a Bond film, anyway - at least, not in the way that CR was. It's about one man's blind rage, and desire for vengeance. In that regard, its closest relative is LTK.

Casino Royale is an amazing movie for lots of reasons.  One of which is that it was exciting to watch Bond start as a random agent and end as "James Bond, super agent" by the end.  The music paralleled this journey by hinting at the classic Bond theme the whole time, only playing a classic big arrangement of it literally at the end as Bond says his famous introductory line.

A problem with all the Craig sequels I have is that they all have a starting-over feel to them, continually resetting to explore Bond's past more, never moving forward until the end of each one, only to be reset again in the next film.

You watch him go through Casino Royale, and you're like cool, he's Bond now!  Then in QOS he goes back to having all these internal struggles, until he finally comes to grips with Vesper's death and tells M he's ready, and it's like OK, NOW he's Bond and ready to go.

But then in Skyfall he has to come to grips with his upbringing and the death of his only parental figure in M, and at the end it's like "oh, OK, NOW he's Bond"

But then in Spectre he has to face off with another sort of parental figure with ties to his past and he revisits all kinds of stuff about all his prior adventures, and then finally it's like "oh OK, now he's REALLY really Bond.

They never just let this new Bond have a self-contained adventure, they all deal with his internal struggles and his past and all kinds of other stuff.  It all worked great in Casino Royale and they could have made it work in QOS as a true sequel to CR that the Bond films don't normally do, but due to the writer's strike they were never able to really finish writing that movie properly (and the terrible directing made everything worse anyway), but I don't really like the direction they took him in Skyfall or Spectre.  And now that Craig is 50 years old I expect his 5th film to be about how he's old like they already did in Skyfall 6 years ago.  It won't just be a one-off adventure, especially since they have Blofield now and they retconned him as being being everything in the first 3 movies so they will want to keep his importance to the Craig storyline up.

It's always been my problem with the Craig Bonds.  They never let him just BE Bond.  Let's hope for the last one it's a straightforward, here's the villain with a plan that's really dumb if you think about it too much and here's James Bond to stop them.

He was Bond in both Skyfall and SPECTRE

I've said it before, I like Spectre a lot up until the reveal of Waltz and then it tries to be a stupid cinematic universe.  The snow plane sequence is so cool.  Classic Bond action.

Craig fans and I don't tend to see eye-to-eye.  My favorite Bond period is Moore's first 4 movies.  Intense brooding Bond just doesn't appeal to me much.  Not what attracted me to those movies as an early teen.

Lost: The Final Season (The Last Episodes) by Michael Giacchino: My absolutely favourite Lost (and Giacchino) music is in this season and in fact on these discs for the last few episodes.
