In all honesty, it could have been worse.

Wasn't expecting much, but I quite enjoyed the score for Aquaman. I am a bit of a sucker for synth scores though...

started the day with boring Bach's Christmas cantatas, then it listened to:

- Heidi (the score)

- Poseidon Adventure (expanded score) (well, expanded...)

Two "baby" scores!

Geez, growing success can either be motivation or invitation to sag. For Richter it seems to be the latter, as his latest - no doubt a multiple Award contender 2018 - hardly rises above the Craig Armstrong level of quaffable orchestrated pop music. Thematically dull and harmonically feeble, Richter even lays on the tv-style booming percussion and it's the score's death knell. The limitations could have worked in the hands of say, Michael Nyman, but with Richter you just hope that it doesn't get too much recognition as an example of 'respectable' film music.

 (wipes tears from eyes). Post of the day. I haven't stopped laughing.

It is absolute gobshite, isn't it; way below his usual standards.

A few notches above 'regular' 2018 film music (the solistic instrumental and orchestrational choices are at times comparable to Austin WIntory's recent chamber-styled scores like Assassin's Creed: Syndicate). Another plus is the brevity, it's agreeable 37 minutes in length. The thematic material is a bit coarse and non-descript, though, too much resembling Zimmer's minimalist bombast: it sounds huge but musically not that much is happening apart from long block chords. Still, a blessing compared to 'Mortal Engines'.

Did it suck? Was it a blood-curdling experience? Was it bloody good? 🤣

I'm literally about 4 minutes into it.  One thing I'll say for sure it does sound better. I never liked the distant, quiet, thin-sounding OST.

All of which I've listened to in the past month. Excellent! I'll have to try some of those John Scott scores though.
