Priest by Christopher Young

I hear organ in the opening cue, and I'm hooked from there.

Good score but such a mediocre film! Had that same feel as The Core or The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

At 75 minutes, there's a lot of formless (read: picture-dependant) clutter, but with its quintessential Newmanisms (the plucky bluegrass-vs-solemn americana variety), it is on par with things like 'Green Mile'. Cues like the Main Title, Across Texas, The Other Fifty and the End Credits make for an agreeable listen - though like with Horner or post-2005 Williams you might rightly bemoan the fact that it's another unnecessary preservation effort. Like with these two gentlemen, you can still acknowledge there's some good craftmanship at work, though Newman's many spherical tableaus are certainly a less demanding chore.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl by Klaus Badelt, Hans Zimmer and Co.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest by Hans Zimmer and Co.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End by Hans Zimmer and Co.

Recording sessions 'edit':

Bloody brilliant. So many great themes- a terrific catalogue is established in this trilogy. There's such adventure and power manifest in the action set pieces, and the contrast in AWE's love theme, and the Calypso material, among others, are great examples of the range of music that Zimmer and the crew (get it?) pumped out for these flicks. To rank, At World's End is a masterpiece, so no. 1, then The Curse of the Black Pearl, as I've never really enjoyed Dead Man's Chest as much as the others.

Highlights:

The Curse of the Black Pearl

- the Elfman-esque theme for the cursed crew (quite minor)

- Moonlight Serenade

- the Sparrow Cello Theme

- Fog Bound, quite a nice opener

Dead Man's Chest

- all the Davy Jones/Kraken organ material, naturally

- the entire Wheel of Fortune sequence

- Make Way for Tortuga

- the electric riff for the Dutchman crew

At World's End

- Battle with the Brits

- Hoist the Colours

- the entire Maelstrom sequence, especially the wedding, and the weaving of Calypso's theme

- Trying to Get Lost and Over the Edge

- Multiple Jacks, for it's eclectic simplicity

- The Green Flash

- the love theme, the pinnacle of the trilogy's music

Schindler's List by John Williams

My first time finishing the OST in one listen, and it took no shortage of tissues. A masterpiece. No other piece of music can effect me in such a way as this.

The Fly II by Christopher Young

Good stuff, even if it lacks an ending. The album just kind of fades out. Needed a closing suite of some kind!

Flowers in the Attic by Christopher Young

Anyone else find the theme similar to Psycho II's theme? Every time I whistle one to myself, I start whistling the other.

Yes it was. And it's great to this day really. I might watch it tonight actually.

John Barry gives his first Moore 007 film a completely bog-standard 1970's John Barry score. Which is simply really fun to listen too.

Done on a tight schedule for a movie that isn't particularly great Barry's score feels less "hefty" that some of his other works. Both in writing and sound its quite lean.

The asian instrumentation feels like a lighter, frothy version of the similar music in YOLT. It fits the film. There's a few nice set pieces.

:music: Us by Michael Abels. This isn't bad actually. Refreshing to have a coherent and listenable horror score. It's very prominent in the film too.

How well does it hold a 79-minute listen?

I'm surprised its reissue isn't getting more attention. I know it's minor in the Horner filmography and all, but Horner doing monkey music is surely something of interest on some level?

It feels like an extremely long album but, typically for Horner, the tracks/cues are so well constructed that it doesn't matter much. It obviously uses some familiar elements but overall I find it very pleasing to listen to. The textures and colours used are slightly more engaging than normal. There's some really good action/suspense music in this score. And yes, even with all the Gayane adagio and danger motif abuse. The former is actually very well adapted into different modes.

No need to bring Titanic into this.

I wouldn't really call them "lush". The first one is actually quite grim. The latter is more vibrant and the recording is better too. It's a very fun score.

:music: Raggedy Man by Jerry Goldsmith. I actually sort of dig this score. It's not what I expected at all but it's an enjoyable album. I'm sort of glad Varese sent me this in error. 😂

Holy fishpaste, the main titles for Elliot Goldenthal’s Pet Sematary is one of the most obvious temp track jobs I’ve ever heard! There’s barely any difference from Amityville Horror! If Horner got sued for using Powerhouse in Honey I Shrunk the Kids, I’m surprised Goldenthal didn’t get sued for this thing! Whether or not Chris Young’s score for the new movie will be any devilish delight, it’ll inherently be an improvement over this.

Leonard Rosenman - Robocop 2 (Varese Deluxe Edition)

My first time listening to this score at all.  It was fun!  The main theme is stuck in my head now.

Is the End Credits identical to the opening Overture?

David Arnold - The World Is Not Enough (LLL Expanded)

I continue to listen to this one a lot since it came out.  I enjoy it very much from beginning to end!  However, I did make my own playlist that cuts out the vocal songs, and the jazzy casino source cues.  I just listen to the score.

Gustavo Dudamel - Celebrating John Williams (Live at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles 2019)

I enjoyed this album QUITE a bit!  I found all the performances energetic and well-performed, and of course enjoyed getting to hear the Adagio from Force Awakens, Sherzo for Motorcycle concert version and Marion's theme 2018 version the most because many of the other tracks I've heard live a million times.  I also liked that there was no audience noise at all, until the surprise bit as a finale after the last track ended.

I doubt I will listen to this entire program over and over again as I have heard stuff like Hedwig's Theme, Adventure on Earth, Theme from Jurassic Park, Raiders March, Imperial March, Superman March, etc so so so so so many times in my life, but a nice shorter program of the rarer and best performed tracks will get some replays from me in the coming months.  I really liked this performance of the Olympic Fanfare and Theme for example.

The Post (C&C Playlist) by John Williams

One of my favourite Williams scores as of late. Opening with The Papers, which is a low and almost spy film like cue, making use of some synths. The easy going piano cues (Two Martini Lunch, The Oak Room , 1971) are awesome: always lovely listening. Of course, the grandest pieces (Setting the Type, The Presses Roll) make wonderful use of the strings. Williams Americana style is here in the undertones at times, and cues like Mother and Daughter really give that nice earnest sense. The suspense of Let's Publish is also effective. A very enjoyable score.

David Holmes - Ocean's 11

I sort of recently "re-discovered" this score lately (I think I first downloaded the promo over a decade ago and have own the OST album for a while as well), probably after enjoying Pemberton's Ocean's 8 score so much.  I really love this score, it's fun and short!  Unfortunately neither album is ideal; The FYC album really has a "hole" in its narrative and drive that would be filled by Gritty Shaker and A Little Less Conversation, while the OST album is full of annoying dialogue and other vocal songs I don't want to listen to.  I suppose I should make my own custom edit at some point.

Howard Shore - The Fellowship of the Ring (complete edit)

A masterpiece!

Basil Poledouris - Starship Troopers (Varese Complete)

I love this score.  Listen to it all the time and never get sick of it.  I think Klendathu Drop is one of the absolutely best action tracks of the 90s, and really all of film scoring.

John Williams - A.I. Artificial Intelligence (La-La Land Complete)

Hadn't listen to this one in a while.  I kinda fell in love with it all over again.  What an emotional journey this score takes you on.

If you like Holmes' original Ocean's scores, you'll like this - it's very much cut from the same clothe, lives in the same musical world.  I like the old Ocean's scores, so I liked this one too!

My second listen.  Still super fun!  I noticed one track that MUST have been temp-tracked with Now You See Me (Sealing The Exits)

I dig this score a lot!!  It kind of came out of nowhere to really surprise me.  The film was garbage but the music is full of fun!

Wow.  I've grown to like this score A LOT on repeated listens since it came out.  I saw the film and it's utter garbage, and the score kind of comes off as yet another weak way they are trying to ape Soderbergh's style for the limp movie.  But the score album on its own away from the film is a fun an exciting album with lots of personality.  I dig it a lot!

Easily one of my favorite scores of the year.  Fun from beginning to end!
