publicist 4,643
Wild guess: the part of the movie that is 'action' is much bigger than in the original so it couldn't be successfully duplicated from the old Vangelis score which left a gaping hole for Johansson to fill. Since these scenes are considered the $$$ shots, they wouldn't wait for him to come up with a successful solution, also because Zimmer & team bring along a huge technological facility where such things can be produced much faster. I don't think it's an outrage but sure it would have been more interesting to hear the sole vision of JJ instead of a last-minute tinkering of 10 other guys. Maybe. I don't think Villeneuve is afraid for a different kind of score so I still think the name Zimmer is strongly suggested by the suits upstairs . The investors might consider Johann's approach a risk and therefore want something more conventional, something that meets the expectations of the modern audience. It's a last-minute job and it has to be exactly what they want. There can be no mistakes! Who you're gonna call? 10 hours ago, TheGreyPilgrim said: Enter Hans, Zebra in hand.... Alex I think Blade Runner 2049 is the first movie where Jóhannsson isn't going to get away with his atmospheric style of scoring. With Arrival and Sicario, those were art movies so I doubt the studios wanted to interfere. This sounds a lot like the studios putting the brakes on his music and wanted something more propulsive so they got Zimmer in there. I wonder what this means for the Villeneuve/Jóhannsson collaborations in the future, especially since Villeneuve's next film is Dune, which is a big budget epic. Good examples of the former: The Kinks (Ray Davies), Wilco (Jeff Tweedy), The Who (Pete Townshend), The White Stripes (Jack White), Thin Lizzy (Phil Lynott), The Jam (Paul Weller), The Replacements (Paul Westerberg), Weezer (Rivers Cuomo), The La's (Lee Mavers), Pulp (Jarvis Cocker), Modest Mouse (Isaac Brock), The Smashing Pumpkins (Billy Corgan), Nirvana (Kurt Cobain), The Shins (James Mercer) Good examples of the latter: Queen, CSNY, Teenage Fanclub, Sonic Youth, The New Pornographers, The Pixies Of course there are the famous songwriting duos, like Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards, Morrissey/Marr, Fagen/Becker, Bono/The Edge etc. And there are definitely bands whose song writing was true collaboration, REM is my go-to example. I just think they're less common. I dunno, I've never thought bands were a particularly good comparison to film composing because bands are songwriters who are also the definitive performers of their own songs. Very different from what Williams does. Lennon/McCartney is a difficult one because that got fractured quite quickly and even in the early stuff you can what's a Lennon song and what's a McCartney song. They bounced ideas and took advice off each other but it was far from a 50-50 partnership. Morrissey and Marr was 50/50 but one wrote music and the other out the words on top. Quintus 5,399
Sicario is on Netflix and I keep hovering over it. Can't bring myself to press play though. It's not one of those really dense with dialogue crime thrillers is it?

Sharkissimo 1,973
I loved Sicario. It's one of the few contemporary thrillers made with any moral investment. In that sense Villeneuve is the antithesis to the likes of Mann, Fincher, Roskam and Refn. Koray Savas and KK

Bespin 8,481
I am currently watching the tv series "Humans". I wonder where Blade Runner 2049 can go to amaze us, except showing machines who can create machines. It remembers me the "clones" war of Star Wars... in 1977 it was wow! In 1999 it was... boring. thestat 348
Wow, that is actually a very bad poster. What is this - 2002 with Harry Gregson Williams providing a spastic score to Tony Scott's frantic editing? Or Villeneuve being challenged by the studio. Well, Johannson will do fine, as will Wallfisch - both are capable composers and as long as Balfe, Kaczynski etc. or any of the RCP, are banned this will be great.
