What Is The Last Film You Watched? (Older Films)

Oh, by the way. I think he loves Mad Men? The company I used to work for in LA actually supplied the fake herbal cigarettes they smoke on the show. So every time you watch Mad Men and they're smoking, think of me.

Yeah I've heard of it.

Based on your silly comments, I don't have the impression that you have. Maybe it was humor?

Indeed, but I don't have to worry,  he only sees Funny Games as some kind of promotion movie for guns, which of course it isn't.

The Magnificent Seven (2016)

What the heck? It's another pointless remake. No surprise there. It's so half-baked and joyless. The cast has absolutely no chemistry. No one cares when characters flee or die because we never get to know any of them. The action scenes were a bit hyped in reviews and I was mostly disappointed. All we want is to see this chick's tits:

Spoilers: it never happens. To be fair, there are some nice visuals besides the clevage. Of course, the only reason I even checked this one out is because of Horner's involvement. His presence is definitely felt in the first half. There are Hornerisms dating back to the 80s and it's as though he's scoring crappy movies from beyond the grave. Those trademark angelic vocals are all the more eerie. Still, if these fleeting moments reminding us of the late James Horner aren't enough, you can feel free to pass on this one. Perhaps he should have.

Weird thing is it doesn't feel like an actual James Horner score, instead rather like some Horner pastiche by some no-name imitator using all his cliches and mannerisms to 11. Which is funny given how he came under fire his whole career for blatantly knocking off other composers, which he cheekily did.

The Bourne Legacy - quite enjoyed this ... once the slow-ish first half-hour establishes that this 'sidequel' is part of the Bourneverse, it gets on with what we turned up for - the action. And that doesn't disappoint.

Quarantine

Sense of day jah voo here. As soon as it started, I felt a twinge of familiarity until I realised it's the same damn movie shot-for-shot as the Spanish film REC! Talk about wreck, because the Spanish one was better. Although the reporter chick was hot in each of them.

Good Ed Harris movie. Better than HBO's Westworld!

It was good. I wish Ed Harris would make another film as a director. He's only done two films so far.

Idiocracy - Mike 'Beavis and Butthead' Judge's satirical future-com about where dumbing-down could ultimately lead the world is a funny and depressingly accurate watch ... Terry Crews' porn-star/wrestler President only seems marginally less likely than Trump.

You've never heard of Idiocracy before?  Wow!

BTW, did you ever watch Silicon Valley season 4?  I think I was the only one that talked about it here!

I did. It was quality. Not quite as good as the three previous seasons, but along with Curb, it is a comedy series I follow religiously year on year. The two best comedy series I watch (I see a fair few).

This season of Curb, btw, is the best it has been in quite a few years. I'm gutted there's only three left!

The problem with Silicon Valley Season 4 was they it was major reset after major reset.  They've had some huge sweeping change in their lives and you'd be like wow, this is interesting, can't wait to explore this for a while but no, by the end of the very next episode it'd all be reset again and they'd be on to something else.  Like Dinesh being CEO of Piped Piper, that was utterly hilarious, but it only lasted one episode!  They also handled TJ Miller leaving the show really poorly, and just seem to have no endgoal in sight at all.  You have this genius main character who created something that would be truly world changing if it were a realistic tech (which it is treated as in the show), but now years and years on he isn't filthy rich and powerful and the tech isn't out there for people in the world to use?  It just doesn't track.  All of that would be forgivable if it was crazy funny every week, but the comedy level isn't as high as it was in the early seasons either.

Completely agree - its not as good as itself used to be, but its still better than most all comedies being made these days.  We're at a low point of comedy TV in the grand scheme of things right now

Curb is indeed great this year, yes!

The Florida Project - Not sure I really enjoyed it (the overall characters were depressing, everyone seems to hate Dafeo in the film), but I did really like the kids perspective that the film showed. I agree with the complaint regarding the ending though. It was so abrupt, and just came out of the blue. Like really? Otherwise I got a lot out of the film. - 7.5 / 10

Edit: Meant to put this in the recent films section. Oh well, lol.

His Girl Friday

Definitely not recommended if you have a headache, as Howard Hawks' rapid fire, overlapping dialogue is relentless. Was he the Aaron Sorkin of his time? Cary Grant is himself, but Rosalind Russell really steals it. I'll have to find more movies with her. And that chick from The Son of Kong, Helen Mack shows up briefly - she had a hauntingly beautiful face, that one.

One of my favorite movies of the 1940s (and that's saying something, it's probably my favorite movie decade).

I like Rosalind Russell, but His Girl Friday is definitely her best performance for me.  I despise Auntie Mame, probably traditionally her most celebrated role but I found the movie and character awful.

Firewall.

This was my back-up plan in case District 9 wouldn't be good. But how could it be bad with such high approval ratings? Well, I was tired of it after 20 minutes, you can only have so many characters, fast-paced transitions and sound effects before they overwhelm you. So I watched this one instead, which was surprisingly good, though I sometimes grew tired of Ford's incessant grumbling and rambling, but other than that, entertaining enough.

This is the first time Alexander Desplat's score only interested me for two minutes.

Oh I get it. Haw haw. Somehow gay guys have hijacked the classic actress thing, as if straight blokes can't like them without becoming homosexuals either. I dunno. I just dunno.

Will it be that way in 70 years from now that gay men of the future will be the only ones allowed like Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams or Scarlett Johannson, women topping many straight men's wank lists today?
