The Ritual (2017)

Film is good (largely due to the interaction of the four hikers) until we get to the apotheosis. It's then when I started falling asleep. 5,5/10

Who is the actor on the left? I know this guy.

The Phantom of the Opera

It's funny how much has changed regarding the Webberverse since this flick came out. Behind all that marvelous spectacle, Webber seems inconsistent in his storytelling by simply not maintaining continuity.

Okay, so in this film, we're led to believe Christine died in 1917 at age 63. Fair enough. But then you go and watch (or listen to) Love Never Dies, set ten years after TPOTO (as the opening song in that musical alerts us to), but...

Spoiler

...at the end of LND, Meg Giry goes crazy and shoots Christine dead, leaving the Phantom to have to raise their brat on Coney Island.

Gimme a break! Now I can't watch the movie, and the very well photographed blu-ray version of the Melbourne stage show back to back because of this nagging retcon error. Tangled yourself up, there, eh Webber?

On another note, I'm disturbed to find after 14 years since first watching this, I find my eyes more drawn to Miranda Richardson than Emmy Rossum. Age caught up with me.

Midnight Cowboy

This is one of those movies when you finally see it, all those Seinfeld jokes and references suddenly make sense. Brenda Vaccaro was a real cutie. She reminds me of a Domino's Pizza chick I had a crush on once.

The Deer Hunter

Man, that was long. Interesting to see how manly men develop after a traumatic experience, and others, like John Cazale's character are stagnant and happily stuck in their own state of ignorance. And how suicidal do you have to be to persist in playing that dumb blow your own brains out game? Good flick!

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

well, didn't hate it, didn't get crazy about it..

I'm sure it was innovative in its time.

Some characters were really annoying for me..

Also the combination of independent film aesthetics with orchestral stock music was a bit weird to me.

Ordinary People

More like well-off people with nice houses and first-world problems. This really was 'house porn'. Brat is getting over suicidal tendancies, mum is a withdrawn old cow, and dad is trying to overcome being her bitch. As kitchen sink drama as it gets (I liked Interiors more, but I liked this more than Terms of Endearment), but I like the message that sometimes shit happens with no explanation - an important lesson dad and son learn by the film's close. Judd Hirsch makes it worth watching.

Titanic

I guess it is better than everything, 10/10

OK, instead of speaking magnitudes in general, here's what I noticed this time: by doing the cliché of poor boy and rich girl falling in love and defying their class, Cameron could guide us through every important part of the ship by staying mostly exclusively with our two leads, and tie every location to the plot. This way, we have 1.5 hours to explore and get attached to the ship without even really noticing it, making it all the more heartbreaking when we return inside and see it all in increasing states of destruction.

I also admired how the movie juggles so many side characters and making all of them memorable, be it a more or less fleshed out or even developed character (Ruth, Molly Brown, Ismay, Andrews, Murdoch), an accent with a face attached (Fabrizio, Tommy Ryan, Colonel Gracie) or featured extras (Guggenheim, Cora, I Salonisti, Miss Trudy, the Irish Woman who also played Vasquez and John Connor's guardian mother), and following through on nearly all of their storylines, showing how they made it out or ended. The finale where Rose returns among the dead of the Titanic would sound cheesy as hell on paper, but it works wonderfully in context.

Also, what idiot had the bright idea to stick the film hack edit of "Take Her to Sea, Mr. Murdoch" to the end of the credits instead of "Post"? Granted, My Heart Will Go On would chase anyone away before they get to it, but it's very aggressively unfitting. Or just stick with Hymn to the Sea. After listening to the LLL set 3 times this week, I have to say, other than this and some awkward edits, I mostly didn't have a problem with how the score was handled in the movie.

Chariots of Fire

Took me a while to remember who's who in this movie because most of these young blokes all pretty much looked the same. Not an unpleasant film at all. After a raft of depressing Best Picture selections, looked like the Academy wanted to recapture that Rocky glory. And Alice Krige, she was unrecognisable if you're only familiar with how she's looked as an older chook. She was beautiful! Oh and I liked hearing the Blade Runner music.

Wow, the deleted scenes do add quite a bit to them!

I forgot to mention how I managed to find the 2012 version, and the teal coloring was incredibly annoying, and even inconsistent. This is now my main reason why I'm afraid to get into BluRay: forget ugly boxes and 20 editions with different packaging and extras, about which Amazon gives zero information, DVDs at least mostly presented the movie itself reliably fine; on these, I'd have to look up every movie individually, which release uses old or new transfers, which ones regrade it to the point of near unwatchability etc... You'd think with (probably) the final physical format, they could make up their fucking minds and do all new transfers from scratch with proper cleanup and no additional grading (of course correcting faded prints or bringing shots filmed separately, in different conditions closer to each other in palette would be fine, but splashing teal over 30+ year old masterpieces to appear "hip" would not), but apparently a lot of these "artists" have no taste, and original creators either couldn't give two shits about how their vision is presented to audiences beyond its theatrical run, or actively go out of their way to try and ruin it. I'm generalizing, of course, but it's a worrying trend and has been going on for way too long.

Kong: Skull Island

Screenshot_20180217-143524.png

It was alright. I would have preferred more irreverence. The scene where Kong bathes and is immediately attacked by a giant squid in shallow water for an hour and 45 minutes would have been preferable. The majority of the characters were fairly lame and didn't even die satisfying deaths. The lead white girl constantly had a bag strap between her boobs. I like that.
