What Is The Last Film You Watched? (Older Films)

War of the Planet of the Apes

Meh.  It tries to be a "deeply symbolic and dramatic masterpiece" but in the end it just comes across as hollow posturing.  Giacchino's score is pretty poor too; terribly recorded/orchestrated (as always), over the top, and campy.  I generally liked his Dawn score but he's a terrible fit for this film.

I didn't even bother seeing it at the cinema last year. For some reason I just don't feel like going anymore.

Just wait until it's on Netflix then turn it off halfway through.

Agreed.

And though Giacchino's score had solid moments on album, it did generally serve the film poorly.

The Last Emperor

After a hard slog of a first act including a gratuitously gross shot of the infant emperor's poo, which set off my gag reflex, I was riveted as the story really took off where you appreciate how sad and pathetic this bugger was as he becomes a pawn among bigger political manipulators and descends to being just an ordinary man by the end.

Justice League

While not a good movie (in the classic sense), I thought it was surprisingly entertaining, more so than the latest Thor, Dr. Strange and Ant-Man. Characters were better than expected for an ensemble superhero movie and Supes' first scene was a blast (probably the highlight of the movie). Even The Flash was funnier and more likeable than anticipated. I do have to admit that I find Diane Lane unsuitable for playing Kent's mother. I just don't buy it. There! I said it. 6/10

Ah, directed by Russell 'There Can Be Only One' Mulcahy. Don't think I've seen that one.

Not deep, not profound, not life-changing ... Just fluff ...

I mean, The Rocketeer, a deep and profound experience? Get out of here!

It's all popcorn.

What's wrong with popcorn? Does every movie need to be a pretentious artsy philosophical borefest with some profound thought-provoking message?

They're funny book movies.

Justice League, like DC's last fiasco Suicide Squad, failed at virtually everything and has made most people call for the resignation of whoever is calling the shots at DC.

It's good fluff....nothing compared to Mulcahy's real comeuppance against audiences all over the world, 'Highlander II - The Quickening'.

The Goldsmith score contributed to my lifelong film score obsession similarly to Batman Returns and ID4, so it sort of is "life guiding" for me if not "life changing".

While this is usually justification for all kinds of crimes against cinema and taste, 'Rocketeer' is indeed a popcorn movie done with style. And Horner takes it to the next level.

Highlander 2 is in my Top 10 worst movies of all time. Did Russell 'Razorback' Mulcahy direct that one too?

Ah, i remember watching this on german cable in the mid-90's. And quickly added it to the list of great adventure scores fucked royally by their score releases (it was my next holy grail after 'Temple of Doom').

But I do remember finally finding the soundtrack in a second hand music store in 2005 and jumping for joy. I didn't really care what was missing, only that I finally had it.

According to the CD track list, the movie ended on a zeppelin, but it was less impressive than her two dirigibles.

In the event of a water landing, she has been designed to serve as a flotation device.

The Rocketeer is a fun movie.  It draws you in, has a relatable hero and sidekick, a very pretty, yet not unsubstantial girl, makes you root for the home team, without loathing the villains all that much.  It puts ordinary protagonists in extraordinary circumstances, a winning combination.  It works because it isn't pretentious.  It is a movie comfortable in its own skin.

And it has a fantastic score.

Do you like British voices, dramatized chicken farmers, and a whole lot of clay?

Chicken Run is a good pick. The only other thing that fits that description had something to do with Mr. Ed, and even that's far off.

Well, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit has the accents and the clay.  Has rabbits, a dog, and excitable townsfolk instead of the chickens, though.

A Hologram For The King

A rather mediocre character drama with a Saudi Arabian backdrop. Not sure why Tykwer or Hanks would waste their time with this one.

Colossal

Bizarre science fiction comedy? Drama? The drastic tonal shifts from sarcastic  humor to overly serious domestic violence drama muddles what could have been a really special film. The film’s true conflict slides in unexpectedly and steers the narrative away from how it began. It even rides it out all the way through to the final moments, only to revert back for one final humorous quip before the credits roll. I’m not sure how one would fix these issues considering there’s no real rhyme or reason as to why film’s selling point is even there, but I found its premise enjoyable enough in the end. Weird movie.

I've always liked Aardman's stuff, particularly their Wallace & Gromit films. I have yet to see their latest movie, Early Man, but their last feature back in 2015, Shaun the Sheep Movie, was really fun and surprisingly poignant. The beauty of Aardman is that there's always something for everyone in all their films.
