I'd much rather be a Star Wars fan than a Coen Brothers fan. To date they have yet to make a film a great. And I thought True Grit was one of their more accessible films. Their audince is rather narrow and small

The audience might be small but they are open-minded, unlike Star Wars fans, who tend to be somewhat narrow-minded when it comes to movies and TV series.

I am narrow minded in the whole new hope bullshit. I have trrended more towards films I want  to see rather than caring about the filmmakers themselves. Same with TV. I have little interest towards everyones facination with Chernobyl. As well made as it may be I have no interest in the overall story.

Another reason why Star Trek is better.

But Star Trek people can't even agree what is Star Trek.

Discovery is surely the most divisive entry into the series so far, right? Watching Trekkies disagree about it, it's like BREXIT all over again.

The Captive

Oy my gawd, this was amazingly terrible. It has glimpses of being a much better movie in some of its individual scenes, ideas and performances. But jesus this was a strangely watchable but overall awful and poorly constructed film.

BlacKkKlansman

Good flick! Spike Lee doesn't shy away from making this about fanaticism in general, where the police as an institution represent the sober and calm moderates. Entertaining!

Have you seen any other Spike Lee films? How would you compare this to them, quality wise?

The only other Spike Lee films I've seen are Inside Man, which is a good heist flick, and Oldboy, which is a terrible remake of a terrific South Korean film

Oh I forgot that 25th Hour was a Spike Lee film!  I liked that film a lot when I saw it in theaters when it came out, but that was so long ago I don't remember any details about it now.  Looking it up, it was written by David Benioff of all people (the "Dany kind of forgot" GOT writer)

USS Indianapolis (2016)

Hoo-boy. This sucked. Nicholas Cage, armed with his deadpan & emotionless face, captains the USS Indianapolis, the ship that delivers 'the bomb'. On the return journey, however, they get torpedoed. The ship begins to sink, the men jump for their lives...and then the sharks come.

If this sounds familiar, it's based on true events. And perhaps more notably, it's the basis of Quint's tale in JAWS. On that note, this would've been far better as a JAWS prequel with a Quint POV, perhaps a decent composer manning the score, and some advisement from Steven Spielberg and the like. Even so, a thing like that should've been done earlier. So we're not looking top fine and dandy on that front.

To be honest, I didn't finish this movie, and I don't like to do that normally but it was necessary here. I'd caution against seeing this. Not sure why I saw it.

Hanna - it's more a bucketful than a pinch of salt that's required for this 'if Jason Bourne was a teenage girl' action-thriller. Pretty daft, but the cast are game enough I suppose.

This has been developed into a series on one of the streaming services, I understand. Good God.

From Dusk Til Dawn

What a disappointment! It was great and all dark and disturbing for a while and you're waiting for that movie director bloke to go all nuts or something, but then... ehh it was fine until it really became a Robert Rodriguez movie.

CROOKLYN, MO' BETTER BLUES, SUMMER OF SAM, and JUNGLE FEVER are all good. CLOCKERS is interesting, but BLUE COLLAR did it better. DO THE RIGHT THING should be taught in film school.

Yes, on both counts.

Indecent Proposal

I've seen this movie several times. I will be the first to admit it's pretty trashy. Yet, it's weirdly watchable. You've got downright silly performances by the leads (Woody and Demi) with laughable monologues and outrageous John Barry music right from the get go. It's not like the viewer isn't sufficiently warned within seconds. I actually do quite like Woody in this one. He seems like a real guy and has a nice wardrobe and thinning hair on life support via a blow drier.

Robert Redford is good, but this is a character that we find is an aged predator purely interested in companionship. They do flesh him out slightly, but it's never really enough. He's never a villain, but you certainly never root for him. The whole notion of buying someone is truly disgusting, but the movie keeps our attention somehow with scene after scene of drama and declarations of love or lust. Oliver Platt, a staple of every other movie from the 90s, is really memorable in a brief supporting part as a lawyer.

I feel like this movie really nails the sort of Southern California Malibu snobbish white lifestylers. They go to a terrible art auction, they cry when they need more money for their second house, they sell themselves. There's not a single non-White person in sight. God, it's brilliant. The second half seems to be building up to something more complex, but that never happens.

John Barry's ridiculous score is constant throughout and really quite good. Sure, it's a bit much (to say the least), but fuck if we just never get music like this from dramatic flicks anymore. Demi gives the worst performance, but she's not terrible. She's just sort of Demi. The problem with her character is, as we gradually learn, she is opportunistic and while a mutual decision was made, never quite seems to regret it, while Woody runs to the roof yelling over really loud melodramatic Barry strings.

As I recall the success of Basic Instinct got quite a few 'erotic thrillers' greenlit by major studios in the 90s, but that tailed off into them becoming a low-budget straight-to-video staple. And then online porn kinda killed that off.

I wonder what Spielberg (and Williams) would have done with this.  My guess is it would have been disappointing, but who knows.

The Nice Guys

Aw man this is how entertaining films should be. Reminded me a lot of Rush Hour and Lethal Weapon. Any more like this?

I don’t remember too much about it but that bit with Ryan Gosling trying to keep the bathroom stall door open was brilliant.
