Avatar 2, 3 and 4 or how James Cameron stopped worrying and pulled The Hobbit on us

Hilarious that Cameron/Fox didn't want to go up against Star Wars in 2019, so they just pushed it back until Star Wars' current trilogy is finished. Or he's just really struggled to milk this series for 4 more films.

That's not my Cameron. Now my Cameron, I've seen whole studios turn and run away. And he'd just swagger off back to his Titanic and open the doors with a snap of his fingers.

Fox wouldn't have greenlit four movies if they didn't like what Cameron has planned. Two consecutive $2B films buy a lot of goodwill.

He better make them lean and mean, not 3 hour epics.

The general theory is that the planned trilogy of sequels was reworked into 4 shorter sequels, ala what happened with The Hobbit.

Fortunately the difference here is making that decision while in the scripting phase, rather than halfway through production.

Titanic has more heart, sweat, and tears invested into it. Even if some people are still on that "Titanic SUCKS!" mindset, Cameron had a LOT more at stake back then. It was a labor of love, and Fox and Paramount were brave enough to let him make it.

Avatar.... well, the CGI was top notch.

She's over thirty minutes longer than Avatar!  And far more luxurious....

Is it actually 30 minutes longer? Avatar feels like it goes on for ever.

The theatrical cut of Titanic is 3 hours and 15 minutes.

Avatar has 3 different cuts:

The theatrical cut is 2 hours, 41 minutes.

The extended cut is 2 hours, 50 minutes.

The blue ray cut is 2 hours, 56 minutes.

I saw Titanic once in the cinema. I was 7 or 8 at the time. Seen it many many many times since though. Easily the most watchable 3 hour plus movie of all time.

For me I suppose not but I would say for your average person.

Longest films that I have sat through at the cinema, include:

SCHINDLER'S LIST (3hrs 15 mins)

TITANIC (3hrs 15mins) - twice

J.F.K. (3hrs 15mins) - twice

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (3hrs 45mins)

APOCALYPSE NOW REDUX (3hrs 15mins)

THE TOWERING INFERNO (2hrs 45mins) - five times

THE SOUND OF MUSIC (2hrs 45mins)

all timings are approximate.

I'd love to watch CLEOPATRA, and the GODFATHER trilogy at the cinema.

Wolf of Wall Street is another great 3hr movie.

Dark Knight Rises felt every second of its 15 hour runtime.

However, JWFANPremium disagrees with the statement that The Dark Knight Rises is great.

JWfanDiamond agrees with both statements.
