Read the First ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ Plot Synopsis

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas

Sounds like the plots of the third and fourth film mashed together with Bardem taking over for Tom Hollander/Ian McShane, the Devil's Triangle filling in for Davy Jones' Locker and the Trident of Poseidon granting the same powers that Tia Dalma/Davy Jones/Will Turner already had.

The POTC sequels suffer from Mummy Returns syndrome. The first movie deals with one supernatural element and then the sequels make the entire universe out to be a bunch of crazy supernatural CGI shit all over the place, with pirates.

Can someone please reboot Hollywood?

You need to reboot the moviegoing audience, not Hollywood. The only reason Hollywood keep on producing stuff like that is because people keep on watching stuff like that.

It's called periodicity. It happened to Beethoven, and it's still happening to films.

No, this is more toxic and permanent than periodicity. This is not some abstract artistic trend, this is much more fundamental. People naturally respond to what makes their brains happy, and they pay money for it. This natural response gets collected formalized and used to produce more of that stuff.

It's how the sugar industry went from rare spice to every fucking thing you touch has sugar in it over the course of 400 years.

It's been ten years since people on this forum started saying "oh this is just cyclical!" "It's just like the early 70s, then Star Wars changed it all! We'll be fine by the end of the decade! Some artistic messiah will reverse it!"

12 years later, all we've done is upgraded the word "cyclical" to "periodicity." The trend has actually entrenched itself even more firmly.

I don't think he's using "reboot" the same way that we do. He is talking about returning as Davy Jones and dealing with his son. That's a continuation of continuity.

The series already had a soft reboot with the fourth one. The first trilogy revolved around Bloom and Knightley as protagonists. The fourth movie was the start of "The Further Wacky Adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow."
