Didn't he already retire after Spirited Away?
And then again after Howl's Moving Castle?
And then again after Ponyo?
And now again after The Wind Rises.....

His studio and the media are definitely TREATING this announcement with more gravitas and finality than the others. Even so, I won't truly believe Miyazaki is through directing until he's through living.

Yeah. He's like the Japanese Steven Soderbergh -- he claims he's retiring, but then does another couple of films. Although Miyazaki's work as a whole is so much more satisfying and enjoyable than Soderbergh.

Just read about this. Hope he keeps going though. I consider this tentative until he makes the announcement himself. Come on Miyazaki, a man provides. He simply bears up and he does it. Because he's a man.

I really liked that which shows the sad state of animation films today (mainly in USA):

"I have been lucky because I've been able to participate in the last era when we can make films with paper, pencil and film".

I can imagine John Williams saying:

"I have been lucky because I've been able to participate in the last era when we can make film music with paper, pencil and an orchestra".

Be careful though before buying this set:

Assuming that Disney just re-packages the existing discs from the previous single-film releases, these five movies' BDs will have major problems:

Lossy Japanese audio:
Ponyo

Burnt-in dub credits:
Nausicaa

Dubtitles:
Laputa (Castle in the Sky)
Kiki's Delivery Service
Princess Mononoke

Fantastic!

Also reminded me that I should probably get around to seeing/reviewing Princess Mononoke soon.  I had wanted to finish my retrospective by the end of the year, but that seem unlikely at this point.

Although from what tiny glimpses we saw it didn't seem like "true" (i.e., Western Pixar/Dreamworks style) CG animation, but rather his traditional style but using the computer as the tool instead of his usual old-fashioned ink-to-paper method.
