His story about "remembering to turn on the lights" didn't really feel right to me. Funny, that's one of my favorite Dumbledore moments in all the films. Perfect button to that scene. Alex 2,835
Ideally my perfect Dumbledore would have had Harris' appearance/warmth and Gambon's agility/mysteriousness. However, the "DIDYOUPUTYOURNAMEINTHEGOBLETOFFIRE????!!" bit in GOF still makes me cringe to this day. It's weird, I couldn't imagine Gambon being in PS or CoS or Harris in the other 6. #SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,265
Newell's attempt to ramp up the drama in his lone Potter film by having everyone shout at each other really sets the film apart from any of the others. Insane hairstyles too.

Popular Post mrbellamy 6,278
If the "Angry Dumbledore" was just that one isolated incident I probably wouldn't mind it that much, but everyone in GOF is so over-the-top and Dumbledore seems constantly pissed throughout the whole film that it makes that scene a convenient scapegoat for the overall issues with its choices in tone and characterization. I think it's actually wildly entertaining as a standalone action/adventure but it reminds me the least of the spirit of the books out of all the films, so it's hard not to be of two minds about it. Whereas a movie like POA, I get the gripes about the adaptation of the plot stuff, but to me it translates the whole vibe of what Rowling was trying to do with that world so well that I give it high marks as an adaptation. Characterization is mostly respectful of the book counterparts (I think this movie has the best Harry, actually), and visually it reminds me a lot of her wordplay in those books -- the way it emphasizes the seasonal transitions, or compositions that show off the geography of the castle or casually draw your eye to little details. Columbus/Newell were always a little more insistent on the magical stuff than Rowling, whereas Yates generally kept himself a little too distant from it all for my liking (while paradoxically being a bit too cutesy on the occasions that he did engage in the whimsy, such as IMO the Dumbledore's Army training montage or the potions class in HBP.) Alex 2,835
Yates did love a good musical montage to cover 10 chapters, especially in OoTP

If that film wasn't ''filmic" I doubt the films wouldn't have been as successful as they are. The production design, the costumes and the score (Merlin's Beard!) are all testaments to the success of the first film's "filmic" qualities. Jay 37,351
It's definitely a better score than the first one! Though both are great. As for the film itself, I never had any problems with it. Of course its not as good as the almost perfect original, but its completely fine entertainment. I've never analyzed its pros and cons or anything else about it; Just enjoy watching it *shrug*
