TWIN PEAKS

Anybody else have their eyes glued to the mirrors behind Sarah Palmer in Part 2, in hopes of seeing BOB/Cooper?  Given the history of BOB in those mirrors in the original pilot, the timing in the episode (immediately after Cooper being ripped through the abyss), etc.  Either way, that was an unsettling scene.

Well, here's what I really don't understand. The reason I got into Twin Peaks was because years ago, someone posted on a Titanic forum that James Cameron ripped off the "I'd rather be his whore than your wife" line from some TV show called Twin Peaks. I initially found it almost impossible to believe that such a memorable line from Titanic was stolen. Sure enough, there it was at some point in season 2. Hell, Billy Zane and David Warner were in the exact same episode. So obviously, James Cameron is a Twin Peaks fan and it's a part of our Titanic heritage. It makes sense for me to enjoy this ridiculous supernatural soap opera and Drax should also be a fan, but it's like he's never heard of it. Meanwhile, everyone else here loves it. This just never happens. It's like David Lynch has turned JWFan upside down.

Just finished 3-4.  I didn't think this was going to get any weirder!

Spoiler

The backwards speaking woman in the red dress in the SPACE CUBE is none other than Phoebe Augustine, who played Laura's friend Ronette Pulaski in the original series.  She is credited here as "American Girl."

Cooper at the casino was hilarious, though I've maybe had enough of Mr. Jackpot. Let's get Cooper's agency back.

I was very happy to see Bobby back, and his big scene was great.  His description of Major Briggs's last days lined up very well with Mark Frost's "Secret History" book, which ends with Briggs noticing something wrong with Cooper, and going to call MAYDAY.

Speaking of "Secret History," Chrysta Bell's Agent Preston is the "writer" of the book.

I don't need to see Michael Cera's character ever again.

Anyone think that Albert and Gordon are going to reach out to DIANE?  Can't think of anyone more likely to pin Evil Mr. C.

I guess every episode will end with an out-of-nowhere song at the Roadhouse.  I really liked the Part 2 song, and Part 4 wasn't too bad.

Just a few random thoughts.  Going to bed.

In non-spoiler thoughts, I think the bartender at the Roadhouse in part 2 is Walter Olkiewicz, who played the deceased bartender Jacques in the original series.  Not credited, but the actor was on the released cast list, too.  Interesting.

We definitely will. Lynch is making us wait though, he knows what we all want and he's purposefully dragging it out so that the eventual payoff of Coop finding his mind again will be all the more triumphant. Just you watch!

To me, the pace and structure of these first episodes feels like it has been designed around the winding back together again, bit by excruciating bit, of Dale Cooper. It's actually quite agonising at times, but my theory is once his return is complete, the show will return completely back to "normal" again, and all of the old characters will finally come back into it (there's still quite a few not reintroduced yet and what we have had have been cameos), with their own subplots and place in the bigger story. Say, the second half of the show. Maybe the scenes will even be accompanied by irreverent jazz music again. Without the repetitious music, everything has a distinct and uncanny air of being "un-Twin Peaksy". I think this is deliberate. But notice how when Bobby (hilariously) broke down over Laura's photograph the show felt profoundly like Twin Peaks at last - once Badalamenti's famous music finally returned. That was a taster for things to come. This is my take on what the plan might be.

The last two episodes were quite challenging to get through though compared to the marvelous first two hours. Some of those scenes with Alzheimer's Coop tested my patience and were stretched out far too much. In fact, it actually became boring and tedious at times. I'm all for Twin Peaks and its bizarro time-taking, but there are limits.

I'm hoping the next episode picks up the pace now. There needs to be interesting things happening. Half hour casino scenes aren't very interesting.

Lynch is certainly giving Gilligan a run for his money when it comes to slow burn!

I agree with you that it will probably lead to a slow reunion. Hell I bet since we only have 4 more episodes to go that this will be the focal point of the season. About getting Coop back to normal and laying the foundations for the new mystery.

So far that's all the show has been about really. None of the new characters have any arc that isnt connected either with the new murders or with Cooper. And we havent been invited to be invested in any of them.

Anyone, is this being split into two or are they airing all 18 episodes in one go?

They're airing all 18 this summer; the show airs new episodes for 15 out of the 16 weeks from now til Labor Day, taking the July 4th weekend off.

Maybe include the talk of episodes 3-4 in spoiler tags above, for those who haven't seen them :)

Spoiler

I'm assuming Cooper will get his brain back.  He probably won't be exactly the same as in the original series, but he'll be back.  I think some of the earliest commercials showed black-suit Coop driving a car, so he'll at least be capable of something again.  In my head, his Part 3/4 predicament as Mr Jackpot is the next stage in his journeys through the circles of hell.  Eventually he'll emerge.

I like that even after his wreck in Part 3, Mr. C found his way to the South Dakota prison he wanted to get into at the end of Part 2.  Will be interesting to see what information he wants (NOT needs), and how he gets it.

It does seem like eventually all roads will lead back to Twin Peaks.  Especially since we have two Coopers out there, and TP is some sort of hub to the lodge.  At this point, stuff like the Hornes and Dr. Jacoby just seems pointless, in a way that the things driving the story (Evil Mr. C, Cooper's journey, Glass Box New York->FBI, and Matthew Lillard) don't.

Cole and Albert was a breath of fresh air for me - seemed more "Twin Peaks"y than stuff we've seen thus far.  Didn't really care one way or the other for the Denise Bryson scene, although Cole's statement that he told the other FBI people to come around "or die" was really funny.

Interesting detail in that they mention Sheriff Harry S. Truman is sick, but apparently still alive. I wonder if they wrote that so if Otkean changes his mind and wants to be in it they can facilitate that. Meanwhile his brother Frank looks like he's doing just fine.

Thanks, but Lee told me that over an hour ago.

He provided incorrect information, that the show was airing for 15 straight weeks, which it isn't.  It's taking the July 4th weekend off, only airing episodes for 15 out of the 16 weeks between now and labor day.

Honest to god, I'm still not ruling out an Ontkean appearance.  Matthew Lillard has a pretty major role, and he wasn't on that cast list.

Also contemplating just waiting until after July 4 then watching 2 a week between then and September

I've watched the four episodes over the last few days. And honestly, I have no idea what to make of it. It's even more abstract and bizarre than the film was, and that was way more Lynch-bizarre than the series proper. And yet, at the same time I have the strong feeling that I'm enjoying Twin Peaks more than ever before. This is both brilliantly atmospheric and hilarious.

Hello-o-o-o!

And this might just be the best worst rear projection car scene in history:

My guess is that that particular guy, his disappearing body, and his floating head are going to be a weird instance of Lynchian horror that is never explained

One thing that I've found about this series is that the effects are super weird and abstract - crude, even - especially the CGI - and I think that's by Lynch's design.  The rest of the driving scenes, including Mr. C's driving stuff in episode 3, seem good - so Lynch must have just preferred this aesthetically for some reason.

It's such a deliberate choice that it works. I think it serves to make the surreal more surreal and give a little humorous edge to it, sorta taking the piss out of itself and not feel like it's taking the abstraction so seriously.

The scariest and most convincing (or at least evocative) effect so far is the ghost in the box, and that's a different sort of tone from the Red Room stuff like the arm's evolution or Dougie's head explosion.

I love the deliberate crudeness of the visual effects. I'm glad Lynch didn't fully embrace the polished, clean look of modern TV. And yet Twin Peaks still looks better than ever! The glass box, the red room, the stranger in the prison, all beautifully disturbing imagery.

With that said, I agree with Lee that some of the drawn out silences and set-pieces with amnesia-Cooper were testing my patience.

I haven't seen the 4th episode yet. I liked the 3rd episode (especially that first 20 min!) and thought the 2 hour premiere was brilliant. I do hope we get the old Twin Peaks back at some point. There was some of that old humour back in the 3rd episode in the scene with Hawk and Lucy, etc, but without Badalamenti's comical music behind it, it leaves you to wonder how to interpret the scene. But I trust Lynch and team with where this will all eventually head. I'm just glad to have this back.

Also, I'm liking the ending codas at the jazz club. Curious to see how that will add up at the end of the season.

Oh, and Lucy has barely aged a day!

I honestly didn't even notice anything odd about the car interior shots!

The perspective is all off. The camera looks from the right rear seat over the driver's shoulder, yet the road is centred through the windscreen. It's more noticeable when moving. One of the funniest moments of the series for me so far, and no doubt intentional.
