If you have a Netflix account, watch the first episode of The Toys that Made Us. Pretty interesting documentary about the history of the entire Star Wars toy line and negotiations, the rise and fall and rebirth from the months before May 1977 through The Force Awakens.

I watched this - it was really interesting! Especially the fact that they basically had nothing to sell for the first year-ish after Star Wars (New Hope) was released and offered the empty boxes with the promise of toys to come soon...If I were a kid and got one of those boxes for Christmas, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have comprehended and would have had the worst Christmas ever!

I'm sure they have everything (or nearly everything) perfectly preserved in one form or another.  I imagine they did all this when they back to the original material in 1995.

The postulation that the trilogy was permanently altered for the SE with no hope of the "original versions" ever being seen again never had any basis in fact. Lucas has said the original version doesn't exist anymore or something like that, but I think he obviously meant that was how he viewed it-- the SE was the only version to him.

Lucas preserved everything from those movies. Like Jack Nicholson, he warned 'em when the last VHS set was released. Besides, the versions with Naboo, Hayden and Sebulba are better anyway.

I will say that having the dailies is a lot different than having a print of the finished, edited film with sound, effects, color correction, etc.  I've never bought the whole "there is no possible way to release the original original trilogy" thing - I think that was a lot of panicked fanboy spin of a series of statements that more-than-likely really meant "It would be pretty expensive to do" and "I don't want to."

Wait, nobody wants to see the "original versions" released. They are obsolete, I mean the real original-original versions. Do you watched them recently? My god... No, you don't want that to be released on a Blu-Ray!!!

What we want is I think a properley restored version of the original movies.

I can take all the brightness/contrasts imprivements (Hoth battle, Dagobah, Vader on his ship, etc.), also you can leave the "good" improvements like the crowd in the Throne Room Sequence.

Just remove the "added" and annoying things (the Jabba scene in ANH, the original arrival scene in Mos Eisley, the original cantina scene, the original Lapti Nek, the original Sebastian Shaw ghost, etc.)

Back when Hayden debuted in Jedi, the DVDs were accompanied by a documentary featuring footage from the unaltered version in superb picture quality.

I really hope Disney is planing to released a "Star Wars John Williams Lego Kit".

Each block would represent few bars from a familiar theme, so children will be able to create their own Star Wars tracks with the themes they want!

Note that the box comes with extra blocks of the "Force Theme" and "long bass note" (to allow you to end all your favorite tracks).

Regardless of whether you loved or hated The Last Jedi, this here is totally hilarious and well worth a watch:

All those story flaws and disgruntled fans are worth it, even if only for comedy gold like this to poke fun at them.

I watch very nearly all their videos.

But I don't remember such blatant JWFan behaviour before.

Especially with Hans Zimmer being mentioned in there in the way they did. :P

Trashy mockery of HZ is JWFan behavior?  Maybe 10 years ago.  Not so much now thankfully.

Uhm.... That's not what I said, is it?

John Williams and the music of Star Wars were mentioned in a positive light in that video three separate times.

Sounds like something a JWFan would do, on account of being a fan of John Williams. ;)

As for the mention of Hans Zimmer, it doesn't need to be interpreted as "trashy mockery" either, does it?

That's not really their style at HISHE.

I just took it as being all in good humour.

My best friend (and ex-classmate) has never seen Star Wars. He started once with Ep.1, but he didn't like it so didn't even finish that (ironically, this is one of the only franchises/series where he bothered to start with No.1).

After I saw he got the new big LEGO Millenium Falcon for Christmas, I went over to his house in late January and showed him the OT for his first time. It was my absolute preferred editions, Silver Screen for STAR WARS, Adywan's Revisited with some music restored by me for Empire, and a Frankenstein based mostly on kk650's Regraded Semi-Specialised of Jedi.

He's not always the most reactive audience, and not the most vocal with his opinions, but I could tell he had a blast with SW. Naturally, his favourite moment was the Falcon's introduction (What a piece of junk! after he spent weeks building it), but he really had fun. Afterward, I showed him some of the changes it got over the years and, although not exactly a film history maniac or connoisseur, he was absolutely horrified with most of them - why try to fix/ruin what was perfectly fine and entertaining?

Empire he didn't react much to (his biggest rection was to Vader's chokes and the Mynocks - the LEGO set has one, and I explained to him what it is when we played around with it before sitting down to watch the movies), but he still wanted to see how it ends, and he had fun with how stupid Jedi could get at parts. Out of all the movies we watched together, he seemed to have the most fun with Temple of Doom (good guy), then STAR WARS as a close second.

He agreed that he was silly not to try and watch them earlier based on my recommendations, and agreed happily to watch the sequels and come see 9 in the theater eventually with my other friend/ex-classmate who I saw the 3 new films with.

Now I can't decide what to do with him. Should I try to show him the Prequels in a "let's make fun of how bad they are except for the few cool parts" way after he already shut off Menace (my most beloved of those three) once because it was stupid? Should I show him Rogue One when he hasn't nearly lived enough with the OT to have a connection to it (for me its most resonant strength is how it connects to SW and gives the opening scenes so much meaning), or even get a fraction of the references? Or just watch 7 and 8 and wait almost 2 years for 9?

Interesting choices.

His dad later said they have the blurays but I somehow managed to resist the urge to immediately search the house for them and burn them in the middle of the living room.

I haven't seen KK650's work, but the Silver Screen edition is fantastic for capturing a "theatre" feel, and is the best pure transfer we have (at least until 4K77 comes out). Adywan's is it's own thing entirely, but still really fun to watch.  But I think if I were introducing someone to the OT for the first time, I'd go straight up Harmy.

Yes, at least for the first two prequels. TPM and AOTC should never be viewed at all, except in cases where you happen to be bored and need something to laugh at.

Your friend would probably have fun with ROTS; it's far more entertaining on the surface than the other two. I can watch it without smoking weed being a prerequisite.

Also, The Phantom Menace, while far better than Attack of the Clones, is also the least essential to the overall story. It is narrativelly redundant.

Revenge of the Sith was the only prequel done vaguely right. With tweaking, it should have been the first or second in the trilogy.

I always say that to me, then I watch it again... and find it so bad!

It's at least the only prequel episode which is placed at a right period on the SW timeline.

Episode I occurs to early (baby Anakin, really?)... and Episode II occurs before... the Clone Wars... what a bummer!

I like it more than you.

I really appreciate Lucas’ confidence in crafting the first (and, to date, the only) Star Wars film that is an outright tragedy. That he went for it with the PG-13 scorching of Anakin, the beheading of Dooku, the murder of the younglings - it’s all very evocative.

Just for the audacity of these storytelling choices - he gets my vote on that film.

This.

Some people seem to forget that about 70% of ROTS is every bit as hard to watch as AOTC is. Simply having dialogue (and acting) that doesn't hit your ears like fingernails on a chalkboard forgives a lot in the Disney Star Wars films.

It’s not nearly as bad: its narrative format is much more straightforward; its much more focused; it opens with a “James Bond action opening” and yes, while Christensen is his typical wooden self, we do get McDiarmid at the front of this film doing a bang up job.

Which of course isn’t to sing this film’s praises too much: some of the acting and special effects take me right out of the film, and the turn itself is too ubrupt; also, the way Lucas makes the other Jedi just mean towards Anakin just about made me empathize with him killing them off. That sure can’t help with the drama of their liquidation.

I’m not sure I agree. The only part where it feels like going through the motions outright are the epilogue scenes that are meant to bridge this film into the original Star Wars.

Otherwise, it strikes me as a script that had much more work and thought out into it, if only for its structure.

Lazy?  No.  Misdirected, like the rest of them, but certainly not lacking effort.

For me, the Disney SW films feel lazy.  They just seem to follow an uninspired SW pattern by route, with a few supposedly edgy or progressive kinks.

You don't need to agree, but it's true. It is a very lazy, poorly-written film. Let's just shoot the whole thing against mostly greenscreen and don't even bother to shoot any outdoor scenes using natural light. Seriously, how much extra effort would it have taken for Lucas to take that big ol' greenscreen outside the studio to the backlot? Not a single shot of that whole film was filmed outside of the studio's four walls; plain, lazy filmmaking.

The fact that Lucas didn't even bother trying to get the actors' performances right is yet another example of ROTS's laziness. Lucas wasn't bothered about doing the job right; he thought it could be fixed in editing. Welp, too bad, George.

Another example is the CGI characters and eye lines. If you're going to add a CGI character that an actor is going to interact with in the film, you better make sure you get the darn eye line of the actor right se he at least looks like he's looking at the character, instead of right through it. George himself said he didn't care about the eye lines. Another lazy step done by Lucas that would've helped sell the CGI characters. Movies like the LOTR films and TFA got this spot-on.

The script is very flawed as well. What about Anakin, who goes from being a Jedi to immediately betraying the galaxy on some bizarre hope that the dark side can save his wife, then immediately turning and asking what he's done, then immediately going full-on evil two seconds later? That's some top-notch writing, right there.

I don't think I need any more examples. Just look at some behind-the-scenes footage of Lucas making the prequels, and you just can't help but notice the boredom in his eyes. Once you notice it, it's impossible to un-see.

I've always thought ROTS was the best of the PT.  I'd also rank it above TLJ.  That said I....

....and it just occurred to me as I'm typing this. Is there anything I could possibly say about ROTS, or any Star War movie, that hasn't been said on this site a hundred different ways?

Anyone else get this feeling when posting about, well, anything?

Bloody- Find something else to do other than those prequel callbacks @Philippe Roaché Heck I can't resist. Let me see... Here.

The shroud of the dark side has fallen. Revealed the Sith have been. And shoot I just had a vision of Darth Sidious without a robe. Too revealing the Sith have become.

On my most recent rewatch of the prequels (before TFA) I found Phantom Menace was the only one with at least some heart and passion behind it, where most of the people behind it actually tried to make something OK.

I guess it's the shock of waiting for a masterpiece for so many years and being disappointed immensely.
