La-La Land Records and 20th Century Fox present the restored and remastered re-issue of legendary composer Jerry Goldsmith’s (PATTON, THE OMEN, ALIEN, FIRST KNIGHT) original score to the 1966 Twentieth Century Fox WWI war drama THE BLUE MAX, starring George Peppard, James Mason and Ursula Andress, and directed by John Guillermin. Goldsmith’s powerful masterpiece comes roaring back to life in this knockout presentation. Meticulously restored by Mike Matessino and remastered by Daniel Hersch from original stereo elements, this high-flying re-issue produced by Nick Redman and Neil S. Bulk features the intended film score on Disc One, and the first-time-ever CD debut of the original LP program on Disc Two, along with bonus tracks that include previously unreleased source music. Liner notes from film music writer Julie Kirgo and track-by-track analysis by writer Jeff Bond round out stellar art design by Jim Titus. A must for all film music enthusiasts! This is a limited edition of 2000 units.

And up until right now, LLL was selling autographed copies of this score! They fixed it.

Yeah I noticed that too.

Anyway I ordered this along with Cutthroat Island (2 CD) and To Kill a Mockingbird via SAE. :)

Judging as much as possible from the 128kbit samples, there really seems to be a clear difference in sound quality compared to the previous Intrada release. The Intrada sounds thinner and more damaged as far as I can tell. I'm slightly worried that details may disappear into the background in the new release, but I hope that's just due to the compression.

I definitely want this.

I trust that Matessino and Hersch have done a good job.

The design and art on this one looks, as per usual for LLL, fantastic!

I'm ordering this today. I've been wanting it for a while, but couldn't give in to paying $90-150 for the OOP Intrada release.

The clips sound great, especially "The Lonely Victor". LaLaLand always does a nice job with their titles.

I might sound like a stupid thing to say, but what makes those re-re-releases so hard to resist is the lovely design. Tora! Tora! Tora!, Jane Eyre, Fantastic Voyage - Jim Titus is a devil.

Good point, Koray.

These days, I rip the music as lossless files to my PC and put the CD on a shelf. Occasionally I'll go back to the booklets.

Reissues like this are nice for the people who missed the opportunities to buy the music in the past.

Well I missed the last editions because they sold out so fast and because I didn't have money to get them right that instant so this new release was more than welcome. :)

I never play actual c.d.'s anymore

Sadly physical CDs have become more akin to back-up copies than anything else these days. I really value the specialty label releases not only for the music but also for the brilliant liner notes and gorgeous art direction. But it is true you rarely get the actual discs out to give them a spin after you get the release.

They are collectible items.

Karol

Indeed. As their number is limited the actual physical release becomes sort of a collectible.

Looking at SAE's used prices, I have a shitload of CDs in my collection that seem to go for anything between $50 and over $100 already. Of course I don't know how long it actually takes to sell them for those prices.

By the way, I've ordered this too. Same reason as you. And, yet again, Jim Titus.

Karol

Yup. He does so nifty designs for these releases.
