And I'm sure Rowling intends a degree of universality where many different kinds of people can identify.

Nah, I don't think she ever gave a fuck. (Although she does have a slight interest in the idea of racism and class conflict)

And frankly it's weird to ask people who won't naturally come up with gay romance, subtext or interesting love stories to suddenly do that. It's not their thing and it will suck. Artists tend to need genuine interest and investment in what they're doing.

I could, however, get away with writing gayness and transness. That's funny to me.

Huh. These comments sound very exciting, although I'm a little perplexed at how Lucasfilm could be "over the moon" over a divisive film.

TBF, TFA is pretty divisive....

Yeah, you're right. I guess you could say that basically any film is fairly divisive.

One thing that makes me optimistic about Johnson is just the variety of influences he's been name-dropping over the course of promotion so far.

Also makes me wonder what's in store for the music since on past films he's mentioned influences like Anton Karas's Third Man score, Ennio Morricone, and Tom Waits for Brick, Nino Rota and The Band for Brothers Bloom, and of course Looper had a lot of "found music" from household appliances synthesized into electronic sounds and rhythms. I mean, pretty much everything but "traditional" scores and John Williams. At the same time, he's made clear his excitement about working with our man, so you wonder where the taste overlap might be. What are his favorite Williams scores? I bet it wouldn't just be limited to Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Doesn't seem like somebody who would just ask John Williams for the usual stuff for every cue.

I hope that's the case! Maybe he'll ask for some minimalist influences a la A.I.? :)

The Joseph Campbell stuff needs to go away. People trot it out to look smart.

Really the Hero With A Thousand Faces is so vague it can fit any story. It's not as groundbreaking as people make it out to be.

He was also a boring writer.

George Lucas most of all!

I don't think he pushes it that much actually. He mentioned it a few times and people ran with it.

Its usually the first port of call for people to explain why they didn't like a Star Wars book/comic/film.

As someone who taped and repeatedly watched the public television documentary The Mythology of Star Wars as a kid, his Campbell stuff just seems more prominent to me:

Myth analysis is important, though. I think it's important to remember that Star Wars is popular because it's freedom fighters versus fascists with wizards in space.

This is the episode 8 thread, Steef.  That's an article about Episode 9, and of course the date move has already been posted there (twice, actually)

Just remembered that Johnson said a while back that the temp track was 95% SW music (and all JW). If that temp track really represents his vision of the score, then I don't think we'll be getting anything too unusual here. :(

Usual Williams Star Wars is fine for me :D

Oh, definitely. I'll be nothing less than ecstatic if we get that. But I'd be even more excited if we get surprised with something different (as long as it's good too, of course!)

With Abrams coming in to do Episode IX, this is Williams' last time ever working with a director he has never worked with before. As I see it, it's our last chance to hear a "new" sound from the maestro.

Didn't we get that kind of thing in AOTC already anyway?

Are you saying that AOTC was innovative? (Not that I necessarily disagree, I just never thought of it as such)

I worry though that Johnson or Abrams wouldn't encourage a piece like that because it isn't very Original Trilogy.

I'm fine either way.  I don't think the crazy Coruscant cue is inherently "better" than OT action music.  I like both.

I'm not saying one is better than the other but JW doesn't really do the OT style action music anymore.

Although, the Rathtars was pretty PT sounding now that I think about it.

Seeing that Johnson has defended the prequels before, I doubt he'd disallow Williams from composing anything "prequel-esque" in his score for the film. Overall, many aspects of we've seen from The Last Jedi so far are somewhat reminiscent of Episodes I-III.

True, the casino stuff reminds me very much of a mix of TFAs new aliens in the Outlander club from AotC.

Indeed, minus the flat-screen TVs behind the bar featuring soccer played by droids.
