Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (Rian Johnson 2017)

TLJ, due to a much more relaxed production schedule, will probably be finished much earlier. I read somewhere that movie would be pretty much done by August

The complete score is going to be 30 minutes long. The OST will only present half of that.

20 minutes will be concert arrangements, and the other 10 will be source music, by Jerry Hey.

I didn't think it were possible, but I think I'm more excited about this Star Wars score than I was about hearing TFA.

How is that possible?!

Can't really agree. TLJ hype has yet to go into full gear for me. A big part of it is that we still don't have a clear picture of the new thematic associations or action set-pieces as we did with TFA (which had major plot leak and was generally the "establishing movie" of the trilogy).  I've yet to see anything new from TLJ that looks thematically promising.  It's cool that Rian Johnson is directing and all but I'm not exactly squirming in my seat with excitement to hear "Rose's Theme" or "The Porgs".

Then again, a lot of this is due to the fact that the plot and characters are (rightly) so vague at this point.

They're making quite a big deal out of those porgs, aren't they?

I expected them to just be background characters; but could they have some actual story involvement?

I'm not convinced on overly cute characters being involved in the story... there's something that seems potentially too silly in that...

Gotta give Chewie something to do on the island. A few scenes with R2, Chewie and the porgs sounds fun!

And I believe Williams will give the porgs a flighty, woodwind motif, maybe flute, as opposed to a theme. His motivic associations in TFA were a noticeable deviation from the long-lined melodies of the OT (an evolution which started in the prequels). A lot of his TFA motifs are barely a few notes long and don't exactly develop as the film goes on (map theme).

For real.  Boo to the person who said his work on Lost World was ugly.  Beautifully shot film.

That was me and one nicely shot sequence =/= a beautifully shot film. For everything nice that he did I could post three shots of mediocre photography that summed up Spielberg's DGAF attitude on the film. Not saying Kaminski is to blame for shot choice but they've had consistently superior work in almost every other collaboration.

The daylight scenes atop the cliff-side camp spring immediately to mind, as Kelly sits on the car hood. And the trailer interior that follows. Pedestrian shot choices & mise en scene, like a low budget TV drama. I've always found that long zoom shot of Roland leading the hunters (the shot immediately after the "moveable feast" line) an utterly bizarre creative decision.

As with KOTCS, you can tell when Spielberg was picking and choosing when he gave a shit. All the crypt stuff is dull and visually unimaginative. The jungle scenes look terrible. Almost the entire opening sequence looks great (and was the first stuff they shot - coincidence, or Spielberg losing interest after a month?)

Yes I do think Spielberg was more interested in the Cold War satirical stuff at the beginning than the Ancient Aliens crap.

Originally when Indy used his whip to grab the gun from that Russian soldier, he grabbed it around the trigger and shot another Russian by pulling the whip. How awesome would that have been?

They cut it, naturally. Can't have Indy shooting anyone! It's like Sigourney Weaver took over the franchise.

It's going to be a Little Golden Book or something similar.  Something for toddlers or the earliest readers.  Maybe I'll pick it up for my 18-month-old.  I don't think it was made to appeal to JWFans.

Reasonable perspective not allowed here

heck, that description sounds like a Giacchino score!

Williams is the next Giacchino.

What instrument will Williams use to associate the adorable interactions between Chewie and the Porgs?

Chewie's never really had a musical identification of his own.

Xylophone.

It'll either be like the bird segment of Secrets of the Castle from PoA, or the pizzicato segment of Flight from Peru from RotLA.

Is this a preview of Williams' Porgs theme?!
