What Is The Last Film You Watched? (Newer Films)

No it wasn't.

It was a fantastic, sharp satire of American consumerism.  I still remember that shot of the robbery of the glass house, just brilliant.  The way Coppola filmed the landscape of the wealthy was particularly memorable.  It's a great movie.

Get Out (2017)

It's Look Who's Come to Dinner meets The Twilight Zone (there's a much more pertinent comparison movie but to say its name would spoil Get Out), as if directed by someone like Spike Jonze. It's a really good off-beat thriller with a keen eye for black and even farcical comedy; there's a hell of a lot of skill in the putting together of this story's beats and scenes of suspense: few movies I can think of can have you genuinely on edge to the point of holding your breath only to then suddenly have you guffaw with delight at a well paced visual gag which tells you the filmmakers had their tongue firmly in their cheek when they mounted the great little suspense set-pieces the movie has. One of the twists is easily predicable and there's a major plot-hole in there before it's all over, but I can easily forgive it for that when the execution is so ace throughout as it is here. 4 out 5 from me.

Baby Driver - further proof (along with Scott Pilgrim) that Edgar Wright doesn't need to work with Pegg and Frost to turn in a good 'un.

Superbly chosen-and-used soundtrack, too.

 loved it too. Simple story, a little contrived at times but why nitpick when it was told with such bravado? I had a similar feeling in this as I had in Mad Max: Fury Road where about halfway through I suddenly felt like I could just kick back and enjoy being in a safe pair of directorial hands. The chase scenes kept getting better, the jokes kept getting funnier, the characters had personality and chemistry. Doesn't happen too often where I stop wondering "Oh is this thing gonna get any better/turn to shit?" and just trust that it knows what it's doing. My first thought when it ended was "Hey, that was like a proper movie!"

Great use of pop music as always from Wright (apparently there was a Steven Price score but went largely unnoticed as is typical with a well-selected soundtrack). My favorite:

Yes! So fun. One more I loved, Dave Brubeck's "Unsquare Dance" over that silent montage as they were planning one of the heists, and Baby's fingertapping and Kevin Spacey's speech/body movements perfectly synced with the piano

Spider-Man: Homecoming. It was really good actually. Smaller scale than your usual Marvel movies. It was funny, had heart and was slightly different to what I was expecting. Good fun.

So it was just like Ant-Man?

In a way. Ant-Man was a very plot driven film, this one is more character-driven.

Wonder Woman

Unremarkable indeed. Passable entertainment with more structural integrity than its DC predecessors, but ultimately shares the same flaws as most of these superhero flicks do. Gadot has limited range as an actress, especially when compared to oozing natural charisma of her screen partner, Chris Pine, but I still like her. Music was largely forgettable. Overall, nothing to get excited about.

Baby Driver

Great fun, boasting a great cast. As usual, you're good hands with Wright. Only thing I wasn't too sure about was the ending though. Spacey is great, but Hamm needs more serious roles in film. Had a great time.

Spider-Man Homecoming

I think I'm done with Marvel Studios. The wannabe John Hughes teen vibe just doesn't work in a Spider-Man film, and a good portion of the film is devoted to homages or direct references. The movie is smaller in scale than the usual MCU film, but Jon Watts' shortcomings are present in the badly shot and edited action sequences (the climatic one was a real buzzkill). The cast is excellent (especially Tom Holland's titular role), but Michael Keaton takes the cake here. His role is surprisingly well developed, and one wished the producers and director had spent this energy on the whole script. Zendaya and Marisa Tomei are woefully underused.

I honestly was pining for the likes of Spider-Man 2 after leaving Homecoming.

Who cares about Spider-Man? I just want to see it for Iron Man.

You'll be disappointed on that. Robert Downey Jr. is not a co-star (a la Civil War), thank God.

Sounds like a Godzilla situation just to trick Breaking Bad fans into watching it by casting that bald guy.

That good? What did you like about it?

It's just an interesting sci-fi film, with a great story, great direction, and superb acting. I've seen it at three times now and it's a film that's really stayed with me, so clearly I quite like it.

You don't want Iron Man, Drax, you want Robert Downey Jr.

If it was Casey Affleck in that suit, do you really think you would love Iron Man?! Do ya?!

It's not just RDJ and it's not just Iron Man. Iron Man is nothing without RDJ, but RDJ barely interests me without Iron Man. So an RDJ movie that isn't Iron Man related is generally a pass for me.

What's the difference? :rimshot:

RDJ is always RDJ.

@Matt C why doesn't John Hughes vibe work? Isn't it EXACTLY what these films should feel like?

I do agree on action sequences. They are not that great.

A third of the movie feels like it's directly referencing or channeling Hughes films, at the expense of the story. It rubbed me the wrong way.

That's the issue I have with virtually all films that have action these days.

Strange how sex is referred to as getting some action, but we don't call pornos action flicks.
