From the Memory Alpha wiki

In the original script, Kirk was attacked by ten large "rockmen" emerging from the rock faces of Sha Ka Ree. Unfortunately, with an extremely limited budget (which was responsible for other "high budget" items being removed from the final script, as well as for the use of cheaper effects for the space scenes), only one animatronic "Rock Man", portrayed by stuntman Tom Morga, was created. The single rockman was filmed attacking Kirk, but the scene was thought too poor to include in the film, although an extremely brief (a few frames) glimpse of the creature occurs in the final print during the scene where "God" fires energy blasts at Captain Kirk. Some test footage of the creature is available in the Special Edition two-disc DVD release. The idea did make it to theaters in the Star Trek parody Galaxy Quest. A few images of Morga as the Rock Man were later released in the special feature "Tom Morga: Alien Stuntman" on the 2009 box release Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection (DVD).

The creature can be seen in the finished film, therefor it's existence is 100% canon!

Because for Jerry the Blasterbeam represented Vejur. We didnt get a reprise of Ilai's theme for that same reason.

Also in the 80's Goldsmith had started to move away from unusual acoustic instruments and employed synths instead to create his eerie tones.

We never see people in the 23rd/24th centuries watch movies. Sure we see them on the holodeck, reading books, listening to classical and jazz music.

But what happened to movies and TV shows and the entertainment industry in general in the Trek universe?

Just stumbled upon this fantastic video, which gives us a great insight into Kirk's psyche. You'll never look at mountains the same way again after having watched this.

I now have to wonder. Is Kirk climbing the mountain. Touching the rock with bare hands intended as a prelude to his fight with the Rock men that never happened?

To start and end the film with Kirk, battling the rock. Falling down in the beginningof the film, but eventually victorious in facing the rock demons, his demons....

Powerful stuff!

In terms of story telling scope this is the most ambitious Trek film since TMP by far, dealing with some similar themes. In this way the film does really resemble the original series in that is often large, ambitious attempted story lines they could never really do justice budget wise.

I really quite enjoy this film for that reason. I know it has it's flaws, that's for sure, but it actually involves the crew going out in search of something and exploring the unknown, one of the few Trek films to do so, which is cool. Very much in the spirit of an old TOS episode.
