WHAHAHA! That's hilarious!

And you've got to love "youcannotpassium". ROTFLMAO

BTW: Having not read all LotR material available myself, when did Tom Bombadil wear The One Ring?

In The Lord of the Rings Bombadil tries on the One Ring during Frodo's stay at his house but it appears to have no effect on him. So Tom Bombadil has worn the Ring, even if for a very short while.

Ah, so it really IS just that one minute he was wearing it. I thought perhaps there was more to it. :sarcasm:

Thanks for confirming. :)

Tom is wholly immune to the Ring's power. Even Sauron wouldn't fuck with him and instead would have given his wood a wide berth had he defeated his enemies and ruled - because Tom Bombadil is literally invisible within his own boundaries.

Tolkien alludes in the Council of Elrond that Tom Bombadil could have been defeated because he was much part of the forest and nature as he was of the world, tied to the ever shrinking woodland of the Old Forest. Forests can be cut down and land corrupted by Sauron as Galdor of Grey Havens ponders in the council. Of course this is just a guess by the Elves.

Yes there are quite a few theories on that subject. It is a curious episode in the context of the larger story, still lingering a bit on the notion of faerie story (or perhaps children's story would have been more acceptable to Tolkien) before venturing into darker and more serious territories, the Shire being still somehow in touch with such wonders even though most of its inhabitants didn't know of it. Of course Tolkien's own love of natural world shines through in the character, Bombadil a personification of land and nature itself.

I think he pretty much pulled Tom out of his ass and there's no explanation.

Thou art eloquence itself.

And Bombadil might indeed be a whimsy without a greater meaning or significance than what he has in the novel.

I think part of the confusion comes from our (wrong) idea that Arda is orderly and we know everything relevant in it. But, as far as I remember, this is not the case. Already in The Hobbit Tolkien mentions you can find pretty much anything if you get around. (What's Gollum? Why can Beorn turn into a bear? No in deep explanation is ever needed at that point.) And he did tend to rely, relatively speaking, on improvisation.

What about the Drúedain? Nobody expects the Drúedain when reading LOTR. Yet they are cool. Those sentient trees also come pretty much out of nowhere, and so on. What is all that stuff? Just things that exist on Middle-Earth. We just get a glimpse of all the crazy stuff that might actually be there.

The Drúedain are just members of the race of Men who hath become stunted, and animal like over time. The Ents origins and purpose are explained in The Sil.

Gollum is a Hobbit.

Beorn is not explained though, nor are stone giants.

Yeah I remember it was just theorising on their part, but they didn't really know. What I personally took away from that debate and from the vague, ambiguous descriptions provided by the writer was that Tom's wood, his domain, was a magical place which normal, natural rules didn't apply to. It was a place and being that even Sauron didn't fully understand.

Yet Bombadil was another character, who was part of the concept of the fading and changing of the world towards a more mundane Dominion of Men, his power tied to the ever shrinking patch forest, a remnant of a vast and mighty wood that had spread from Beleriand to Misty Mountains and his time was coming to an end eventually as he was part of his land, whether he was a Maia of the earth as Silmarillion suggests or something else.

The Drúedain are just members of the race of Men who hath become stunted, and animal like over time. The Ents origins and purpose are explained in The Sil.

Beorn is not explained though, nor are stone giants.

But then again Tolkien knew that detailed explanations on certain subjects would rob them of their mystique and magic and left them vague intentionally. With The Hobbit the children's tale didn't need explanations as you usually take all that is happening as part of how this imaginary world works.

ROTFLMAO

The time and effort put into those costumes... My reluctant admiration for such dedication. They all look very classy with such attention to detail. And those pugs are character actors for certain.

The special effects really are rubbish! Look at how badly Smaug was intergrated in the background, which in itself is obvious CGI. Also the color grading is awful. Red White and Blue never looked more garish and unnatural!

PJ clearly lost his mind and WETA are morons. This should have been done by ILM!

PJ's TBOTFA is clearly a political fable where the repressed hordes of the Ocupy movement as portrayed by the people of Laketown join forces with the "One Percent" Elite, as represented by Tranduil and his Elves.

Dol Guldur represent the main Western European powers banding together to (barely) defeat the economic unity of Russia and China.

The Arkenstone and Thrors treasure represent the bountiful oil reserves in the Caucasus!

Probably looks better than how it ended up in film though! ;)

That Smaug/Colbert thing was awesome!

Here it is in higher quality:

You really could get a better look at Smaug's features (at least on his head) in watching this than you ever can in DOS. Really cool. Who knew he even had a tongue!
