The value of it comes from all the transtextual meaning that people will give to it. I wouldn't be surprised if film tries to frame all the events in the sequel trilogy as a vision/boy's fantasy that Luke had when he was looking at the twin suns. Popular Post Fabulin 3,506 Posted October 1, 2019 Popular Post Share Posted October 1, 2019 That reminded me of the most elegant fix to the droid story in the prequels, which I came up with earlier this year, and can't forget: C3PO should have been a shiny Naboo protocol droid and a wise advisor / robotic supervisor / butler to the otherwise suspiciously young queen. R2D2 should have been a genius astromech design of the young Anakin Skywalker, which helps him survive the battle in space. 1. C3PO carrying Padme in ROTS would be significant if she was someone he was "sworn" to care for. 2. A very touching emotional scene about "never giving up" could have been written for the little Anakin and an equally little droid. Then we would know where R2-D2's unfettered attitude from the OT comes from. It would deepen the scenes of him moving through the deserts of Tatooine in Ep. IV despite fear. 3. The space battle against the trade federation would be a story of the duo, Anakin and his droid. Great collaboration. 4. And then afterwards, R2-D2 protecting Luke from Vader to the point of being shot by his own creator would have some real resonance. 5. C3PO could have his memory wiped because his empathic programming couldn't take the fate of Padme, Anakin, and the Republic, and he asked for it. In the OT he would be basically a mentally ill elderly states...bot, who was formerly a diplomatic badass. It would make him less of a deadweight in ESB, because the audience would be more empathetic towards him. 6. As for R2-D2 claiming to belong to Kenobi, a very good scene could have been written with the droid present among people at Padme's death bead. He would be visibly distressed, and Padme, showing some royal class, would actually tell him that it's going to be all right and that Obi-wan is now his master. R2 would take these words seriously, even if the had to stay on Alderaan's consular ship. And then he would have yet another layer of motivation to find Kenobi.
