'Happy Birthday' Song Copyright Ruled to Be Invalid

And it seems like it's due to a technicality, that the copyright is for certain arrangements of the song, not the song itself, which is actually over 100 years old. The people who applied and were granted the copyright in the 30s didn't even write the thing, and even by that time the song had existed for 40 years.

Copyright laws can be completely bonkers.

In Québec we sing a personalized version of "Gens du pays" written by Gilles Vigneault in 1975. Our national poet will have 87 years old in october.

Gens du pays c'est votre tour

De vous laisser parler d'amour...

--> <Mon cher | Ma chère> <Nom> c'est à ton tour

--> De te laisser parler d'amour....

Btw, just to note the headline is a little misleading as the article says this isn't quite over, this was a summary judgment and it doesn't seem like the song is freely in the public domain just yet.
