Intrada first released the complete version of Part 1 in 2009; Today they have re-issued disc 1 of that set in a new edition re-built from the original elements (disc 2 contained earlier versions of cues and an unused source cue and isn't included here).

BACK TO THE FUTURE
Composed and Conducted by ALAN SILVESTRI
INTRADA INT 7144

For the 30th anniversary of Back to the Future and coinciding with the date Marty McFly travels into the future to save his children, Intrada presents this reissue of Alan Silvestri's stunning and spirited score that kicked off an adventure that spanned three films. Intrada premiered the score in 2009 with a 2-CD set, now out of print, featuring the score as it was heard in the film on disc one and an earlier, unused version of the score as a bonus on disc two. This new single-disc release features just the score as heard in the film, rebuilt from the ground up including new mastering and updated packaging to deliver a crisp, vibrant punch. Intrada worked from transfers of the original two-track elements housed at Universal Studios.

The 1985 Robert Zemeckis hit needs no introduction. Executive produced by Steven Spielberg, the film is a flawless production about a teenager (Michael J. Fox) who inadvertently goes back in time 30 years and must help his parents fall in love in order to preserve his own future. The result is one of the most entertaining sci-fi adventures ever produced. One of the many elements that contributed to Back to the Future's success is Silvestri's adventurous, exciting score. Its impact has been so widely regarded that it has become part of a traveling repertoire of films being shown with live orchestra performing the score in concert halls around the world. And while the score was an integral part of the film's overall experience, it was relegated to only two tracks -- a mere sampling -- on the original soundtrack album released in 1985. The MCA Records release focused primarily on the songs from the film, including the Huey Lewis and the News hits "The Power of Love" and "Back in Time." But a few minutes of score was not quite enough, and for years, collectors of film music and fans of the movie pined for a release of the complete score. The 2009 Intrada release reconciled that and this new release keeps this important score in print.

Original soundtrack by Alan Silvestri from wildly popular 1985 sci-fi action comedy, directed by Alan Zemeckis, starring Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover. Intrada previously released a special 2-CD version of the legendary soundtrack in 2009, with a second CD featuring early unused versions of Silvestri's score. Due to the incredible popularity of that original release (which sold the maximum number of units allowable under license and is now out-of-print), Intrada is proud to offer, in cooperation with Universal Pictures, a follow-up release containing just the contents of the first disc in that set, which features the score as heard in the film. (Owners of the original 2-CD set need not apply.)

The 1985 soundtrack on MCA emphasized the familiar songs and devoted just two tracks to Silvestri's score. Intrada's 2008 release was the actual premiere release of Silvestri's invaluable contribution to this movie's stunning success. In fact, the film and score remain so popular that Silvestri's music can currently be heard live in concert, played by major symphony orchestras, synchronized to screenings of the film itself. Thrilling major-key main theme for massive orchestra has become a veritable signature of classic 80's scoring. Pulsating action music is keynote throughout but impressive - and lengthy - "It's Been Educational; Clocktower" sequence is an almost unparalleled example of dynamic action writing. There are moments of genuine tenderness, especially during several warm string ideas associated with the friendship between Doc and Marty, and even a couple of crisp jazz numbers, but no matter where things go, Silvestri's riveting action theme is always close by. Universal is now enjoying a high profile celebration of the famous picture's 30th anniversary. Intrada is proud to be a part of that celebration! Alan Silvestri conducts.

BACK THE FUTURE -- PART 2
Composed and Conducted by ALAN SILVESTRI
INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 336

Joining Intrada's reissue of Alan Silvestri's Back to the Future score album comes the long-overdue expanded edition from Part II of the franchise, previously only available on a long out of print MCA album. The score, like the film, picks up where the previous film leaves off, but then quickly travels into darker territory reflecting the grim world of the alternate 1985. Things are dire in that 1985 and the score emotionally takes the listener there. It's a brooding and more contemplative work, up until the included teaser for Part III, which introduces the rambunctious direction the film and score will go in the final installment.

Unlike the analog recording for the first film, Part II was recorded digitally on the now defunct Mitsubishi ProDigi format, but fortunately Warner Bros. Sound still had a machine that facilitated the new transfer. The restoration was performed by the trusted hands of Mike Matessino, who assembled a 2-CD set of everything recorded. The first disc runs 65 minutes and features the score as heard in the film. The second disc of extras features alternates.

Taking place right after the first movie ends, Marty McFly flies to the future in an attempt to thwart the antics of his son. Marty's seemingly innocent purchase of a sports statistics almanac in 2015 to help give himself a better future goes awry when it falls into the hands of Biff, who goes back in time and secures his own better future -- a dark and gloomy 1985 for everyone else. In order to set things right, Marty must once again travel back to 1955 to intercept the almanac before Biff has a chance to use it.

BACK TO THE FUTURE PART II (2CD)
Alan Silvestri
Label: Intrada Special Collection Volume ISC 336
Date: 1989
Time: 1:40:47
Tracks: 37

Premiere 2-CD release of expanded Alan Silvestri soundtrack for middle installment of incredibly popular Back To The Future trilogy. Robert Zemeckis directs, Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd continue their famous roles as Marty McFly and life-long friend Doc Emmett Brown. Second chapter is darkest, brings alternate universe into play. Supporting characters, particularly Biff (Thomas Wilson), Lorraine (Lea Thompson) get higher profile this time around. Sometimes grim events inspire Alan Silvestri to anchor with original Part I themes but now surround them with degree of thicker, more intense orchestral support. Jagged outbursts of brass, pounding percussion join the familiar action rhythms that accompany Silvestri's rousing, major-key fanfare-theme.

Generous 44-minutes of highlights appeared on 1989 MCA soundtrack album. New Intrada 2-CD release includes all of those sequences plus over fifty minutes of additional music including both new score selections and alternates, from original scoring session elements vaulted at Universal, all newly assembled by Mike Matessino, remastered by Patricia Sullivan at Bernie Grundman Mastering. As with the first Back To The Future (soundtrack available on Intrada INT 7144), this wildly popular second film from 1989 is currently enjoying attention as part of Universal's 30th anniversary celebration of Part I first released in 1985. Intrada is proud to be part of that celebration! Mike Matessino, Tim Greiving offer booklet liner note insights, Joe Sikoryak designs colorful packaging to surround. Alan Silvestri composes, conducts. Intrada Special Collection 2-CD release available while quantities and interest remain!

It’s 2015. We already sort of have hover boards, and now after all these years, we'll have the full trilogy score for Back to the Future on vinyl! We're thrilled to unveil a 6-LP vinyl box set for the trilogy - as well as individual releases - for one of the most celebrated film scores of all time, with music fully restored from original master recordings under the supervision of composer Alan Silvestri. This marks the first time the score has ever been made available in a box set in any format, the first time the original film score has been available on vinyl and includes never-before-released tracks from the sequels.

The collectible packaging for the box set was designed by DKNG studios, highlighting the DeLorean’s iconic fire trails in each film’s setting. The individual albums (sold separately) were designed by artist Matt Taylor from his previously released screen prints for the first two films and an upcoming print for the third film, all set for Pre-Order on the Future Date of 10/21/2015. Orders are expected to ship in early 2016.

Screenwriter Bob Gale contributed exclusive liner notes for the box set. Check out this excerpt about producer Steven Spielberg’s first encounter with Silvestri’s score:

“I remember sitting in Universal's Hitchcock Theater with Bob Zemeckis next to me, and Steven Spielberg next to Bob. Steven had not attended any of our scoring sessions and had always been a tad uncertain as to whether Alan was capable of doing the type of score Steven believed we needed. He didn't realize that some of Al's score had been laid in for this screening. During the Clock Tower sequence he leaned over to Bob and said, ‘now, this is what your score should sound like.’ Bob smiled and replied, ‘that is our score, Steven.’ Thus, Steven Spielberg immediately became an Alan Silvestri fan.”

Universal even had Dan Goldwasser (Warm Butter Designs) put together a website showcasing all the releasing and linking to the Intrada, Varese, and Mondo pages

Ordered my copies of 2 and 3 a couple of hours ago. I'm not sure if there's any more holy grails left now

Not excited about the covers of the Mondo releases but congrats to Universal for making a website for the releases. It reminds me of the Concord Indiana Jones boxset.

Still plenty of holy grails left for me, and the boots of 2 and 3 certainly filled in the hole for those scores for the past ~10 years or so. But man, who would have guessed the eventually legit releases would be 2 CDs each? I had no idea there were so many alternates available for 2 and 3! So cool!

The best news is, of course, that Mike Matessino oversaw the entire production. These releases will be perfect!

The liner notes for 2 and 3 are by Tim Grieving; He just posted this on Facebook about them

Pleased as punch to have contributed liner notes for both Part II and Part III of these expanded Back to the Future scores (from Intrada and Varèse Sarabande, respectively). It meant talking to the ever-sunny Alan Silvestri, writer/producer Bob Gale (who copyedited my notes... the first time an Oscar-nominated writer has done *that*), and even Robert Zemeckis—who gave me some great quotes about his go-to composer:
"Alan is the first person I show the movie to when it’s done. ’Cause I know he’ll tell me straight. When I finish my cut of a movie, I don’t show it to any of the producers, I don’t show it to anybody. ... My editor and I will sit down and we’ll run the movie for Alan. And that’s when we start the scoring process, and that’s where I start the final editing process—with his notes. I consider him my second heart in the movie."

Jay, I know you're not a fan of digital downloads, but you may want to update the thread title to reflect the fact that all three scores are going to be available digitally as well as on CD and vinyl, at least according to the website Dan Goldwasser setup.

Woah - you're right!

It says:

DIGITAL DOWNLOAD VERSION AVAILABLE FROM GEFFEN RECORDS — AVAILABLE OCTOBER 16TH

for parts 1 and 2, and

DIGITAL DOWNLOAD VERSION AVAILABLE FROM VARÉSE SARABANDE RECORDS — AVAILABLE OCTOBER 16TH

For part 3.

I wonder if that means iTunes, Amazon mp3, Google Play, HDTracks, Qobuz, Spotify ???

Just to make sure real quick, does it seem like the bootlegs for 2 and 3 have anything these new sets won't judging by the tracklists?

I think the boots might be useful for separating tracks if they can't be cleanly separated on the new releases...other than that they're practically obsolete. Although strange enough Clementine on the boot for Part 3 list it as 4:22 where on the release it's 2:51 so could have been looped for the boot...wouldn't be the first time a cue was looped on a boot but not on an official release.

Derrick, Mike Matessino oversaw these releases. There's no chance the bootlegs contain anything the new sets won't have.

The only thing of note is that the the boot for BTTF 3 had a super long version of My Darling Clementine with a normal ending, and then the film version ending (where the band awkwardly stops) as a separate track... but the Varese DE only has one track for "My Darling Clementine". Maybe the track has the 2 recordings combined. It's shorter over all, though the boot track could have been looped and then faded..... Or maybe one version is hidden as an easter egg track.

Here's my comparison by looking at the track lists:

So it seems the "film version" of the opening of Part III was the alternate Western Union from II....

That's what I believe as well after hearing it the sample. At 1:40 for the sample is where the music kicks in in the film itself. I replicated the cue as best as I could since after all we never had the original "prologue" cue with the boot...one of several left out.

Pre-ordered both Part II and Part III. I already own the 2-disc of the first movie, so I'm passing on the single disc.

Wonderful that we're getting complete releases. Hopefully they'll arrive on October 21st!

Well those are estimates, they could always arrive from the pressing plant earlier than anticipated.

Well, the new sets will be all over the internet this Friday when the digital version drops. Hopefully they'll all be deployed on Spotify!

I doubt they'll make it to The Netherlands in time for October 21st though. Guess I'll be listening to just part one on my way to the theatre. ;)

I doubt I'll be listening to anything but the theme on my way to the theatre....maybe The Power Of Love.

Only if you want the alternates. I'm sure secondary market prices for the 2-disc release will come down a bit now that the 1-disc complete score and vinyl releases are coming.

Don't count on it. If anything it might drive the price up through the roof because the previous 2-CD set is a special release.

I wonder... Does it mean the first one will sound much better than the previous edition?

Karol

Judging from the samples at least to me it sounds the same but others might be different for hearing... I honestly have no need to buy the first one again I'm happy with the previous 2-CD set that I have.

Sure, some sellers will list it for more, but people will be much less inclined to pay their prices. I think every few months (4-6 maybe) one will get listed between $30-$50 and immediately snatched up by some fan. You're awfully cynical/pessimistic about this market, aren't you?

It's an absolute fact that the OOP 2CD edition will only go up in price from now on. It is, after all, a sold out, limited edition run score CD to a popular film.

What do you mean cynical/pessimistic? I just know from history on OOP stuff like this that a lot of sellers tend to mark the CDs double sometimes triple for the amount they're really worth.

As for the remastered Back to the Future... Here's Roger's reply on FSM (can't find the exact spot):

"When Mondo expressed interest in putting this out we realized the existing 16 bit CD master wasn't sufficient. So Doug had to go back to the original transfers and start over to create a master for the LP. He took the opportunity to redo a CD master as well. Does it sound better? Probably. Will it be revolutionary? Probably not."

And here's Doug's response to my question on Intrada board:

Roger answered beautifully. I created a new master, yes, but the original Universal vault elements didn't "improve" with age nor did anything else per se. Sometimes re-mastering means little more to the listener than knowing there were new parts with which to manufacture from. It's really one of the most abused terms since it means almost everything being reissued on CD these days is ostensibly a remaster. Add a new track, change the sequence by a track, even add just one extra second of silence between two tracks and - voila! - you have to create a "new" master. Anyway, it's a frequently abused term since it often promises more than it delivers.

So with all that said, I personally don't think there is enough of an improvement here to warrant re-purchasing the disc, which I mentioned in my capsule on the website. Perhaps there is just ever-so-slightly more low end down with the basses and cellos and the tiniest additional "air" around the upper strings and brass. But those are really very subtle changes from what was done the first time around. We did create a 24-bit master this time, yes. But the audio differences are still pretty small. There is only so much one can do when re-visiting the same master elements - unless one really screwed up the audio the first time around. While that can and does happen - I don't think it happened on BTTF.

So the bottom line is, if you want to have your Intrada library remain totally complete (we should be so lucky) then it's probably worth another $20 to continue on that path. But beyond that, this release is aimed at the wider general market who has little interest in various alternate cues and just wants to enjoy the score to a massively popular movie. Keep in mind we sold the maximum allowable units under our deal (10,000). I'm willing to gamble that more than half of those went to fans of the movie. Not to "us" soundtrack collectors. Plus this release allows us to be a big part of Universal and Amblin's much-wider marketing scheme on the entire trilogy. With Varese doing Part III, Mondo on vinyl detail, Universal on the Blu-rays and us on both Parts I and II, it appears we're in great company.

So only double dippers will probably be Intrada collection completists or ferocious fans of the original score obsessed in getting all possible versions of the music even if it offers only little change in the sound quality.

It seems likely that Jurassic Park will, at some point, get an expanded release.  I'm that thing.......optimistic ;)

If something obscure like In Harm's Way can get an expansion, you'd think JP would.

Yup the only reason to get the original score is to be a completist and you don't mind double dipping. Other than that not to harp on Intrada there's no point to get it. Especially if you're like me and have the original 2-CD release.

The new Expanded CD has a shorter version with a clean ending, the film version ending is not included, unless it was hidden somewhere...
