I suppose they can't get rid of rubber forehead aliens and the like at this point. Or teleportation.

Would you prefer more exotic looking aliens to see each week? I would direct you to the excellent and underrated Farscape, though even it relied on human looking aliens as its primary antagonists and a few rubber faces.

New Star Trek Series Rumored To Be Set Before TNG

Quote

A trusted source has chimed in and told me that it looks like the show will be a seasonal anthology, which means the first season will be set post-Undiscovered Country. After that the entire Star Trek universe is potentially open. So those of you hoping for a post-Dominion War show... don't give up hope. That could come some day.

“It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand-new iteration of Star Trek with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman,” Fuller said in a press release last year.

Wait, Kurtzman is involved in this?  Shit.

We've known that since the first post in the thread

Great news. This doesn't pigeon hole the show makers. After TNG hooray.

At some point they must answer the Sisko question. And did the Borg survive. I say no.

That's weird they say it's set after TNG. Every article I've read recently, including the one posted earlier this month in this thread, has indicated the first season at least will be set after The Undiscovered Country, but before TNG. These two articles were posted today and also claim it will be set before TNG (Article 1, Article 2). I can't handle such uncertainty!

It's alright.  Maybe like 51% good and 49% zzzzz

It'd be a good followup for you after you're done with X-Files

He's directing a Mummy reboot starring Tom Cruise...? That sounds like the most ridiculous thing to ever happen in the history of film. Yet I am extremely interested in how it turns out.

Kurtzman's TV credits are actually fine. Isnt Fringe supposed to be really good?

Kurtzman, along with Abrams and Orci, barely had anything to do with the show after it was conceived.  Jeff Pinkner and J. H. Wyman were the main showrunners and creative force behind it.

Not sure how I feel about Kelsey Grammer being named the new Captain of the new Enterprise F, though color me intrigued how he will portray Captain Bateson as a man out of time now in charge of Star Fleets flagship.

Notice it said "new crews" not "new crew", seemingly confirming the early rumor that each season would be a different crew in a different timeframe.

Special effect looks "cool" in a very generic sort of way.

If it isn't taken directly from the Star Trek 2009 end credits, it might as well have been.

Does that font look very 2009-ish or am I mistaken there?

Multiple crews does sound potentially interesting.

Especially if it is multiple ships at the same time.

Oh, good point - maybe the show will cover 2 or 3 different ships all exploring the galaxy at the same time.  So they will have more actors, but pay them for less episodes, and of course occasionally the crews will crossover.  Who knows.

Come to think of it, it would be a great way to put to rest the "Enterprise is always the only ship around" comment.

Plus more variety could be good. Different design ships and maybe some specialised vessels for specific purposes.

And imagine the team ups during the season finales!

Maybe a bit of... dare I say it... space battles?

That only really happened in the movies, not in any of the TV shows.

What's all this about "progressive" audiences?  The thing that worked about, say, having Nichelle Nichols in a leading role was that they didn't make it into a thing.  They just did it.  If they make it into a thing now to be "progressive," it'll be heavy-handed shite.

It was very much a conscious decision to be progressive in casting Nichols. Making it "a thing" behind the scenes is not the same thing as making it "a thing" on screen. A conscious decision by Fuller to have a diverse cast just can't be cast in a bad light, in my opinion.

Gonna do the annoying "quote by quote" response, because you did the "create disagreements where there are none" thing.

Didn't say it wasn't.

Didn't say it was.  The latter is not what TOS did, and it was all the more powerful for it, but it's what I'm dreading the new one will do, because that's unfortunately the way people do things like this now.

Well, I just did cast the decision in a bad light... IF it is presented in a wishy-washy contemporary American way in the show itself, and that Fuller mentions it here is at least an inkling that it's on their minds enough to go that route.

The great thing about Star Trek is that it doesn't preach about any of this stuff.  It's just presented as the way things are in the future, when people have gotten over dumb shit.  That's the way I like my Star Trek.  Not with in-your-face social commentary and try-hard "progressiveness."

This is absurdly speculative, just clarifying my point.

I guess I'm just not sure what your dreaded worst-case scenario actually looks like, any examples of diversity done "the wrong way"? (IMO, the only "wrong" way to do it is begrudgingly).  As a big fan of Fuller's previous work, I certainly don't think there's any reason to approach this series with pessimism.
