Lorca and Stamets were discussing alternate universes earlier in the episode.

Wherever it is, Lorca certainly didn't enter the coordinates to Starbase 48 when he plotted that jump.

Alex should like that. The female Admiral he screwed over came back, so Lorca had to run to safety.

In fact I'd like to just see it become more of a genuine ensemble like the other shows, with the Captain being the character everyone else pivots around.

I'd like to see some of the other characters actually become characters. Most of the bridge crew is still nothing more than a set of recurring faces.

Maybe, and I guess that would fit Meyer's original concept, but despite all its confusion and identity crises, STD is still too anchored in the Trek series concept to simply say that a large part of the regular bridge crew is just backdrop. Not when the main characters are all high ranking and/or bridge officers. Every recurring character in Quark's had more character than these guys.... and Morn had more lines than them.

You mean Fuller"s original concept?

Both of them, I guess.

Neither Burnham or Tilly are high ranking officers. Stamets and the Doc certainly arent bridge officers.

Not Tilly, no. Stamets seems to be chief science guy or something, and the Doc is the Doc. It occurs to me that I actually have no idea *what* Burnham's rank or official role is. But whenever we see her, she's clearly dealing with "important" stuff, so if she isn't high ranking, she at least has some special status.

If the original concept was to show a "officer-level plot" from the view of (hierarchically) minor characters, there really isn't much to see of that. Data's Day had more and better insights into the lives of the common starship folk than the entire STD series so far.

Burnham, after the first 2 episodes is basically as "asset". No rank, since she was stripped of her original one after becoming a mutineer. Basically put to work by Lorca and eventually becoming a "science specialist".

Lower Decks is probably the episode that did this the best.  Data's Day is still from the POV of a high ranking officer.

So STD is not even second best at it. ;)

The thing is, one might argue that the bridge crew is made up of non-characters if this was a character centric show from the POV of a non-bridge character. But it isn't, or at least it's only partly. Lorca is very much a main character and a POV, and surely to him the other bridge officers are, if not friends like on TNG, at least familiar people who he regularly interacts with, and who she should at least see a bit more of as part of that relationship.

But they're really nothing more than command receivers. And Lorca doesn't even seem to address them directly when giving most of his commands.

Yeah. There are individual connections between characters, and definitely characters working together, but I get no sense of camaraderie among the crew as a whole. In every iteration of Star Trek the crew has felt like a family, and you just don't get that here.

I would just dismiss that as "it's only nine episodes in", but frankly as painful as some of the first nine episodes of TNG, DS9 & VOY were, by that time you already felt like they were a genuine crew working towards a common goal. So while Discovery may get better, I'm not sure that aspect of it will change. Maybe that's just not how the show is designed.

If Isaacs goes my interest in this show will take a serious hit.  Every Trek show has had a high caliber actor in that role.  Martin-Green is fine, but she's just not there yet and lacks the pure presence that Shatner, Stewart, Brooks, Mulgrew & Bakula had. One thing Trek has always done really well is cast their lead.

“STAR TREK: DISCOVERY”
ORIGINAL SERIES SOUNDTRACK
AVAILABLE GLOBALLY ON FRIDAY, DEC. 15

Soundtrack Features Original Music by Emmy® Award-Winning Composer Jeff Russo

Available Digitally, With CD and Vinyl Album Following in Early 2018

Dec. 5, 2017 – CBS Television Studios announced today the release of the original score of the CBS All Access series STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, which premiered earlier this fall.

The album, featuring the score by Emmy Award-winning composer Jeff Russo and distributed by Lakeshore Records, will be available digitally on Friday, Dec. 15, with presales beginning Friday, Dec. 8. The soundtrack will be available as a CD and vinyl album in early 2018.

“Grand, glorious, hopeful, heartbreaking, intimate, bittersweet, tense, soaring, surprising. Over 51 years, in its many iterations, there's been no shortage of adjectives to describe the music of Star Trek,” said co-creator Alex Kurtzman. “On the other hand, the list of composers capable of capturing them all is short, and this is where Jeff Russo comes in. Jeff manages to hold each note in beautiful balance, evoking the nostalgia of Alexander Courage's original theme while scoring Discovery with his own unique ear and heart. We're lucky to have him, and we hope you'll love his music as much as we do.”

“The producers and I talked a lot about telling this story from an emotional point of view,” explained Russo. “Relationships play a big role in this incarnation of the series, so trying to be true to that and create themes that connect characters is important.”

SOUNDTRACK LIST:
1. MAlN TITLE (AIRED VERSION)
2. WE COME IN PEACE
3. FIRST OFFICER'S LOG
4. I'LL GO
5. THE DAY IS SAVED
6. TORCHBEARER
7. PTSD
8. PERSISTENCE

13. STELLA
14. FACING OFF
15. UNDETERMINED
16. WATCH THE STARS FALL

The piping on the shoulders and the metallic plastic on the sides of the uniforms are awful in this (gold in particular is camp AF), I can already see how dated these costumes are going to look in 10-15 years. It's pretty surprising that somebody in charge approved these designs actually.

TNG and DS9 have some dubious costume design choices when you look back, but one thing they got bang on target was the starfleet uniforms.

I agree the gold doesn't look good. Still an upgrade of the blue overalls from Enterprise though.

Mike had a great theory about the Lorca being his evil "Mirror" version in the latest episode. Shame that we basically get another Mirror Mirror...

Its more likely it is a mirror mirror mirror.

I told you atleast twice that Discovery was on a mid-season break and would resume in January.

With only three episodes left I'd had my hopes up that I'd be done soon.

It resumed on Sunday. I have seen it and after Sunday's episode I'm more convinced now that Discovery is from a SLIGHTLY alternate reality from the main established prime universe.  Despite that the producers say it's from the established prime universe but as I said after Sunday's episode I really question that now.

There is NO other way to explain the inconsistencies between STD and TOS. Technology far more advanced, the look and feel of the Kelvin timeline, I just don't understand why they couldn't say it was an alternate universe?

What did everyone think of 'Despite Yourself'?

I was a little disappointed not to discover that we had been in the Mirror Universe all along..

But that said, I actually enjoyed this episode. The uniforms were so nice! God I wish they would just wear those the whole time. Still not particularly interested in Michael Burnham but I did find Ash Tyler more interesting this episode. I was a little surprised to find myself invested in his personal conflict actually.

Overall there was a sense of fun here as well as danger and some twists and turns. It would be better if I actually cared more about the crew overall in this show but I'm trying to be patient.

I still think Lorca is from the MU originally.

I think that as well with Lorca. The explanation of his supposed death and the way how Lorca survived the destruction of his ship from where Discovery originated from.

The question is how much of a reboot will this be. How long are we going to get to hang out in the MU? Is this the rest of the season or will they never return (thus explaining why no one ever has heard of the MU or super-fast travel in TOS).

To be honest I'm sure they will return to the ordinary world but I am much more interested in staying in the MU.

The Wolf Inside

The Burnham/Ash romance scene early in the ep is awful. The two actors have ZERO chemistry together. But everything else was good. I liked the moral complications Burnham had to deal with. I liked the way they dealt with Ash/Voq here.

Some weird stuff though. Stamets dies, but of course he doesn't (they're not gonna kill 2 gay characters in two eps). Some of the CGI looked silly and the ep has no less then 5 shots of the CGI camera going though ships hull, 4 of those in the teaser. Discoveries visual style remains rather random.

But this is a lot of fun.

What are you talking about?

Okay, I'll Nolanize my simple post for you. You all complain about Discovery (except Thor) and yet as soon as the next episode airs, you' re all sitting in front of the TV, unlike me who waits until all the episodes have aired.
