Ranking JW's 21st century scores

Recommended Posts

Apologies if this topic has been covered before but after the release of TFA, I would be interested to see where you guys would rank it amongst JW's post-2000 output.

Personally my list would read as follows:

HP3

HP1

The Terminal

TFA

HP2

Tintin

AI

ROTS

War Horse

Memoirs of a Geisha

KOTCS

AOTC

Minority Report

Munich

The Book Thief

Lincoln

The Patriot

Catch me if you can

War of the Worlds

And my favourite cues are "Buckbeak's Flight". "Hedwig's Theme", "Rey's Theme", "Dinner With Amelia", "The Mecha World", "Anakin's Dark Deeds" and "Plowing".

Same here. I've been lukewarm about much of his work since...POA I guess. Some I like more then other, but nothing really blew me away. Something that actually has disappointed me

TFA is really the JW first score to really stir me emotionally on a deeper level since Potter 3. So I must put it high up there, even if its still so new.

I'd probably rank the TFA OST above most of JW's albums of this century. But I'm not the biggest fan of his music from this period anyway.

Really??

That list of scores is amazing! Definitely better than 90's...

Sure, it's a great list, but I prefer his '90s scores to be honest. Not to mention the previous two decades.

Please, we all know that Williams has been on a steep decline into inevitable ruin since the 70s. There is no stopping it.

If you say so.

You're just too franchise-bound (but then, so is the forum).

I will list what i DON'T like much:

Catch Me If You Can

Munich

The Book Thief

Good but not exactly orgasmic:

Patriot

AOTC

Terminal

Tintin

Swell:

All the rest

I dunno if I can rank all of JW's 2000s and 2010s scores right now, there's too much from the 2000s I haven't heard in a while.

But from the 2010s, my ranking is easy

1. War Horse

2. The Force Awakens

3. The Adventures of Tintin

4. Lincoln

5. The Book Thief

I have completely withdrawn from all STAR WARS discussions & threads here after my initial "early press screening reactions", so I'm suddenly fascinated to see all this love for TFA! Cool. My opinion, however, is pretty much the same as what I said then.

At the moment, I would perhaps rank his post-2000 feature film scores thusly:

1. A.I.

2. HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN

3. STAR WARS - EPISODE III - REVENGE OF THE SITH

4. STAR WARS - EPISODE II - ATTACK OF THE CLONES

5. MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA

6. MINORITY REPORT

7. MUNICH

8. THE PATRIOT

9. WAR OF THE WORLDS

10. HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE

11. CATCH ME IF YOU CAN

12. WAR HORSE

13. HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS

14. THE TERMINAL

15. STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

16. INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL

17. TINTIN

18. LINCOLN

19. THE BOOK THIEF

Just now, Jay said:

Munich and The Patriot better than War Horse and Harry Potter?

My oh my I hope I don't ever get tinnitus!

Well, the third HP is above both of them, if that's any comfort!

MUNICH is most definitely a masterpiece -- both film and score!

WAR HORSE and HP1 both have some great moments, but they're not even CLOSE!

Of course, all of the titles above have great value. Even THE BOOK THIEF. So it's not like no. 1 is great and no. 19 is bad.

Every score John Williams has done is good.  He's never phoned a score in in my view.

Some are more original or impressive than others, but I never got the impression that he was ever just going through the motions.

I don't think I can rank them all but of his most recent output I would rank them like this:

1. TFA

2. Lincoln

3. War Horse

4. Tintin

5. Book Thief

Outside of that, the Harry Potter scores are great with HP1 and HP3 being tied for best and HP2 being a distant second. And the Minority Report score has really grown on me with it's use of percussion and unusual sounds. Memoirs of a Geisha might be his most complete work of the 2000s, or maybe tied with HP3.

Aside from ranking AI so low, I like your list Blume.

And Munich is a great score. This board gives it waay to much flack.

My rankings are seasonal. AI probably hits around #2 come autumn and foggy rainy weather.

Munich has some great tracks, including the one with the droning beep that I can't name. Very unsettling,

Indeed. It's an edgier, more raw Williams that abandons his more refined stylings to really get under the skin. A very fine thriller score.

Love these cues:

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
A.I.
The Adventures of Tintin
Star Wars - The Attack Of The Clones
Star Wars - The Force Awakens

The first Harry Potter is undoubtedly one of Williams' masterpieces. Outstanding. Even the smaller themes are unforgettable.

1. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (masterpiece)
2. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (masterpiece)
3. Star Wars - The Force Awakens (very good)
4. Star Wars - Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (very good)

5. A.I. (very good)
6. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (very good)
7. Minority Report (good)
8. The Patriot (good)
9. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (good)
10. Star Wars - Episode II - Attack of the Clones (quite ok)
11. The Adventures of Tintin (quite ok)
12. Memoirs of a Geisha (quite ok)
13. War Horse (quite ok)
14. The Book Thief (emotionally fitting, but no "great pieces")
15. Catch Me If You Can (few cues are very good, the rest is so-and-so)
16. The Terminal (so and so)
17. Munich (only a few cues are worth listening)
18. War Of The Worlds (not my cup of tea, though I respect the craftmanship)
19. Lincoln (not my cup of coffee)

It is understood that what I consider "quite ok", referred to Williams, is better than 95% of the film music being written today.
