Hi Folks!

I am glad people were excited about La-La Land's 3CD Collection Vol 2 of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Coming this spring/summer is the long-awaited 4CD Collection for Star Trek: Voyager...and then after that we have a "50th Anniversary" Star Trek collection that we're going to do a little differently...because we're TAKING REQUESTS!

This 50th Anniversary album (# of discs TBD) will have music from across the 50 years of the Star Trek franchise—including previously unreleased cues from TNG, DS9, VOY (beyond the upcoming album) and ENT.

This is not to say there may not be future volumes for DS9, ENT and the other shows, but for now, we are concentrating on this 50th Anniversary collection to present as much previously unreleased music as we can.

So...if you have favorite scores and/or cues, please list them here in this thread! Be as specific as you want from the episodes—give me Netflix timecode from the episodes and I will make sure to try to include the correct piece!

Let's see how this goes. Thanks!

Lukas

Just to add some further clarification

The main thing we are looking for are cues that were left off previous TV releases, as well as obscure pieces of music that only the true fans would like -- source music, actors signing, etc.

We still plan on doing DS9 Vol 2, Enterprise Vol 2, and Voyager for this year, so any episodes that were not included on the original releases from us you shouldn't bother listing.

Think obscure.

Thanks

Also, list anything that was left off the films as well. We will do our hardest to include those as well.

This is pretty impressive and really special for LLL to foot the bill for something like this.  Epic win.

You gotta post your requests on FSM, I don't think Lukas and MV will read anything here :)

And good to have confirmation that DS9 V2, Voyager V1, and Enterprise V2 are all planned to come out this year.

There's an extremely brief cue from For the Uniform when they get in the turbolift to go after Eddington and Sisko says ''Defiant'' that is like a mega highlight of the entire franchise and needs to be released.

It was mentioned in the 8th post of the FSM thread.  Surely it will be on the Voyager 3CD set coming out, and not the 50th Anniversary set.

Also, Lukas Kendall just popped into the FSM thread to say this:

Hi Gang:

A few answers!

The TOS tracks for the 2nd and 3rd season library music come from the newly discovered first-generation masters, which sound better than the second-generation tapes on the TOS box set.

Yes, that "Love Theme" is the one unreleased TOS Mullendore library cue (because it wasn't on the masters). We took it from the music stem to "Court-Martial."

The suggestions thread earlier on the FSM board was enormously useful, thank you! I relied on it a lot for the TNG tracks. I passed the suggestions for DS9, VOY and ENT to Ford Thaxton.

There is so much TNG material because it was my favorite of the new shows and I had a lot of tracks that I wanted to include...and the standalone TNG volumes are done. This was the last chance.

But there are two VOY 4CD sets coming and one for DS9, and a second volume of ENT came out a few months ago, which will have lots more great stuff that people want.

Surprised nobody here commented on that last sentence in his post!!!!

Here are some more LK tidbits:

Will ST: TAS be offered as a standalone release? Since the sessions took place in Europe (Paris, yes?) there wouldn't be AFM reuse involved, right?

No plans for a standalone TAS album.

Also, how come neither McCarthy's (much requested) "Peak Performance" nor the "Conundrum" teaser cue was included in set?

At a certain point you run out of room and I choose other cues—that's the honest answer.

What's this?

MUSIC INSPIRED BY STAR TREK
Music Composed by Ron Jones
44. The Ascent (7:43)
45. Meaning (2:27)
46. Pathway to the Stars (3:17)
Total Time (44–46): 13:32

In recent years Ron Jones was asked to participate in Star Trek concerts and wrote two new pieces of music inspired by the franchise for the occasions. He has recorded those pieces (along with a third written just this year) with a combination of live players and virtual tracks at his new facility north of Seattle, SkyMuse Studios, for this album. It's really great to hear his voice doing Star Trek again!

The Animated Series was very difficult to release. The only surviving masters were the mono music stems from the dialogue/FX/music tracks. We transferred all available episode DMEs and Neil Bulk meticulously collated all of the cues to get each one complete and in best-possible sound. Then Mike Matessino did the audio restoration. I think fans will be very happy with the sound and presentation. Incidentally I tried to do what Neil did and got around 2% of the job done before I threw up my hands, screaming mad. I don't know how he did it.

Separately the licensing was quite difficult. Filmation's licensed properties were handled differently from the shows they created from original material. CBS owns and has administrative control of TAS but the music was published by Filmation's company (which is why none of the TOS music was reused) so we had to clear it with Universal Music Publishing, who represent the current owner. It literally took years.

I don't know of any plans to release any other Filmation music, sorry. This release does not necessarily make any other Filmation album easier to achieve because of their licensed properties and the lack of music masters.

I am sorry you are disappointed. That is not lip service; I really am. There was just too much music to choose from and no way to include everything and make everybody happy. For every piece that gets added, something else has to get deleted.

As a lifelong Trekkie I really love working on these albums and it has been tremendously gratifying to get to do so many of them. Thank you all for supporting them. As long as there is interest I do not see why we can't continue to release more Trek music.

The TNG theme was always intended to be a marrying of the Courage TOS original (first half) and the TMP Goldsmith march for the credits. I dimly recall, though I don't have an interview source, that this came from Roddenberry personally. Dennis McCarthy's audition for the TNG job was to create a synth demo of such an arrangement and marrying of the two pieces. Unfortunately we could not find a tape of that, but we did find Dennis's DS9 demos (MT and pop version) for this new album.

At the 1987 season-one format music session, Dennis recorded his arrangement (for reduced orchestra) of the Goldsmith theme for main title and end title use (as well as shorter versions for trailers and bumpers). He also recorded the Courage part. The two parts were married in editing.

Dennis also wrote and arranged, and conducted one take of, an original theme that was never used in the show but included on the "Encounter at Farpoint" album. It is a triumphant march theme with the familiar "Picard's Theme" as the B-section. Ford Thaxton will know better than I will but it was provided as an alternate or safety choice for the M.T. and E.T. in case the producers chose not to use the Goldsmith theme or for some reason could not clear it (although I don't see how that would happen, seeing as how Paramount owned it).

Die-hard fans know that the version of the Main Title sequence heard in the first season episodes is not quite what was recorded. A "loop" was made editorially to present one more statement of the Courage "Enterprise" fanfare, and some cuts were made in the Goldsmith theme (notably at the ending). We searched but could not find a clean music master of this (without Enterprise ship sound FX). Dennis recorded the Main Title sequence for the second season incorporating the editorial change of the opening into the arrangement—which is to say, he recorded it again for the second season to make it sound like the version they cut up to create in the first season. He then recorded it again for the third season (adding some electronic sounds for the opening to enhance the new cosmic visuals), which was used from that point to the end of the series.

The track on the new album has an alternate version of the Courage half of the main title with the opening bass synth sound taceted, and the Goldsmith theme played without the cuts. You'll have to hear it to understand exactly what I mean.

I hope this makes sense!

But there are two VOY 4CD sets coming and one for DS9, and a second volume of ENT came out a few months ago, which will have lots more great stuff that people want.

Who exactly were all these people clamoring for the finale of TWOK without Nimoy's narration? It's an essential part of it. It now seems so...un-Trekkie-like.

Agreed.  It would be weird to listen to it with out Nimoy's voice over.

Another LK tidbit

Whoa, just listened to the sample for 14. Monster Illusion (“The Cage” M42) LM18 (2:34) and it sounds awesome! Now I want all of The Cage-Remastered, if the better source tapes are available and comprehensive. Is this possible?

A clarification: the better first-generation tapes were ALREADY used for almost everything on the TOS box set. The main exceptions were the 2nd and 3rd season library music. When we did the TOS box set, those tapes were missing, so we used the second-generation dubs (which are hissier). We subsequently located the 2nd and 3rd season library music first-generation tapes which is why we included them on the 50th Anniversary album.
