TownerFan 4,983
He was essential in helping to shape and develop the ideas of the four guys, especially John's and Paul's. He was a musical mastermind. The arrangement of "I Am The Walrus" is one of the greatest ever made. Ricard
Unlucky Bastard 7,782
I always felt he and Brian Epstein were the guys who held it all together. After Brian went so early, it wasn't really the same for the boys behind the scenes.
Quintus 5,399
Martin is a legendary producer who was great for The Beatles in particular because of his vast knowledge of classical repertoire. But the way Radio 2 is going on and on and on about his passing this morning it's like Princess Diana all over again as far as the Beeb is concerned. They over report on these things so much that it gets to the point you get sick of hearing about it. And it ain't even lunchtime yet.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,265
The beeb does love to milk their celebrity deaths.
Quintus 5,399
Everyone is falling over themselves to call Martin "the fifth Beatle", which is probably news to a lot of people - since before today that was widely accepted as being Brian Epstein, even by Paul McCartney. Quintus 5,399
I was listening to his Live & Let Die score a few weeks back, it's smooth as fuck. Still the best Bond movie, possibly because of Martin.

#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,265
Live And Let Die is NOT the best Bond movie! The score is excellent, btw. I won't have a word said against George Martin's efforts there. But the film is one of the worst.
Quintus 5,399
It has no pretentions to anything clever or sophisticated though, it's the Bondploitation entry into the series.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,265
I know. It's 007 does Shaft. Something about it just rubs me the wrong way. I much prefer Man With The Golden Gun, which is the one everyone else hates.

Score 770
... the string quartet in "Yesterday", the string ensemble in "Eleanor Rigby", the clarinets in "When I'm 64", the orchestral chaos of "A Day in the Life", the trumpet solo in "Penny Lane", the potpourri of quotes from famous pieces in "All You Need is Love", the Baroque keyboard solo in "In My Life", the cellos (and the rest) in "Strawberry Fields"... what would these pieces be without those "signature" elements? Wherever George Martin was involved as an arranger, he always left a very important, distinctive sign. The most beautiful "colours" of the Beatles' songs are due to him. The Beatles were really five.
