John Williams to Score Kobe Bryant short film "Dear Basketball"

Yes, but the shorts categories at least are generally a chance for more down-to-earth folks (and aspiring big shots) to win Oscars.  At least in the live-action categories.  Animated is often for Pixar/Disney to win.

Yes, but the down-to-earth folks are disproportionately white.

Update: "Dear Basketball" will be released this winter.

As much as I loved watching the Maestro perform it live to projection with Kobe Bryant narrating, I am looking forward to seeing this masterpiece with the Maestro's original recording; not to mention seeing the detail of Glen Keane's wonderful animation. This is an inspiring piece of art. A special thanks to Kobe Bryant, Glen Keane, and Maestro John Williams.

Wonder if that implies theatrical distribution in the US. Maybe they're attaching it to Last Jedi...

I assume it's like an iTunes release of the film, but I don't really know.

Sigh.  I really don't want to have listen to Kobe's voice every time I want to hear this music :( :shakehead:

Well, in this case, the only reason the music exists is because of Kobe.  So, this way, you will always know to whom to be grateful for the music.

This part is true.

I'm ready to start taking it for granted.

Yeah I found that wording strange. Would be cool if it's attached to TLJ! We'll see.

I was just kidding about TLJ haha.

I think that's about as likely as Williams doing RPO after all...

Yeah I was pretty sure you were but it's not a bad idea... I mean, I know there's no connection between the film and Disney but maybe Kobe will pay for a trailer slot on opening night? ;)

No guarantee the digital release will have 5.1 though right?  Is that standard for digital release of a short film?

Films get released digitally in 5.1 all the time!  It would be odd if you had to buy blu rays to get 5.1 audio and all the netflix, hulu, amazon, itunes streaming / downloads were only 2.0!

What does this mean?

What do you have to be to receive this link?

Most likely a voting member of AMPAS (for the Oscars), or of BAFTA or HFPA (for the Golden Globes).

John Williams Fan Network isn't a reputable-enough affiliation? :P

There is an animated short category.

And critics watch and review all sorts of things.

I could see this winning actually...

The trailer ends with a link to watch the film, but I can't seem to find it. Apparently you can watch it on go90.com. Where is it?

Yeah I don't know. Maybe they'll post it soon.

Music in the trailer sounds better than ever!

Any chance the go90 file has a 5.1 mix so we can try to extract the music clean?

At the moment, the audio is only accessible via real-time playback of the stream.

Aaaaah, i cannot see the video!

is it the complete film in great quality?

Yes, complete.  Video looks great.  Audio isn't all that great.

EDIT:  Audio is essentially band-limited to ~13 kHz, meaning it's no better than 32 kHz sampling rate.  And there are very noticeable compression artifacts.
