Just finished my first listen.  Not terribly wowwed by anything, other than the final 3 tracks, which were all great!

Admittedly, I was mostly distracted by the Nintendo Switch reveal, so its time for listen #2!

Where/How are you listening to it?

Wouldn't be a gia album without cheesy puns.

Listen #2 wasn't a big improvement.  I really enjoy the last 3 tracks, and the first one to an extent, but everything in the middle just kind of blurs together in a blob of unremarkableness.  Bummer.

There's rarely anything to understand about Giacchino puns.

Well, except who Bela Bartok and the Kronos Quartet are.

Probably headphones.

ROTFLMAO

Hmm. So it sounds like there are no "Yorktown" moments in this one. Much of my anticipation has been slashed away by Jay's comments.

Well, I'll give it a listen myself tonight.

Jason is well known for going "meh" on a first listen and proclaiming it as a masterpiece a week later.

The Force Awakens for instance.

To be fair, that was the case for tons of us, myself included. I've never so radically had a shift in opinion regarding a score before. Bit ridiculous how much my opinion changed on it.

On first listen I like what I'm hearing. There are lackluster pieces I don't even listen to, but there are also great moments in that OST :)

Highlights for me are :

- Go For Baroque (Did not see that coming but nice :P kind of cool to hear some sort of harpsichord in a Marvel)
- Strange Days ahead

- Smote and Mirrors (This one is really cool)
- Post Op Paracosm
- The true purpose of the sorcerer
- Inside the Mirror Dimension
- Mystery Training (Reminds me of Vangelis and that's great)

- The master of the Mystic End Credits (It's a grower. Did not like it at first but now, I find it entertaining)

I'm never comfortable judging an OST this sprawling after one listen but I will say I really like the textures of this score. Nice use of instruments like organ, fake sounding sitar, harpsichord, some synthesizer, etc.

The best Marvel Scores are the one off, self contained scores that fit their film perfectly, but don't fit in any other Marvel film. For example, Beck's Ant Man, Silvestri's Captain America, Doyle's Thor all have their own flavour, and by the sounds of this, it wont fit in any other Marvel film either, which is good. But on the opposite side of it; Jackman's Cap stuff, Tyler's Iron Man, Thor and Ultron stuff, would fit in any Marvel film. It's all interchangeable, therefore unmemorable and disposable.

OK, finally blasting this out of my home setup instead of crappy work speakers.

Already liking the score more

So there's clearly backwards vocals in A Long Strange Trip, anybody tried reversing them yet?

Yeah that was definitely a disappointment.

Well, you can get a perfectly clean rip from the intro, so it's not too bad. I mean, it wouldn't be in lossless, but...

Best Marvel themes

1. Captain America - Alan Silvestri

2. New Avengers - Danny Eflman

3. Thor - Patrick Doyle

4. Thor and Loki - Patrick Doyle

5. Avengers - Alan Silvestri

6. Thor 2 - Brian Tyler

7. Ant-Man - Christopher Beck

9. Iron Man 3 - Brian Tyler
