Composers and their families indeed just like everyone else deserve to have their privacy at home. As funny and dorky as such a serenade outside JW's house is it still uncomfortably infringes on the Maestro's privacy even if the intentions are innocent. crumbs, mrbellamy, mstrox and 1 other

Bryant Burnette 654
I'm glad Williams was gracious and got some good press, but I think it's extremely disrespectful to do something like that to him. Or to anyone, really. But then, the world is full of people who think that it's all good if it's in the name of going viral. They likely don't care if I think they're pieces of shit. Will 2,215
This is crazy - several family members who aren't JW fans saw this news independently of me. I honestly didn't expect it to blow up like this. It seems there's been some privacy concerns regarding this. My opinion is that it's fine to play that music where they did, but you shouldn't post the video for everyone to see without checking with JW or his agent first. Simon McBride 113
Quote Celebrities, including composers, are people first. Their homes are off limits. ALWAYS. Honestly, this argument makes no sense to me. If I lived down the street from someone, I'd be visiting their home to get to know them as neighbors regardless if they were famous or not. Gruesome Son of a Bitch 6,488
I've joked about stalking Williams in the past, but I would never actually do it. When I have met him in person in Boston, I turned into even more of a freak I was so starstruck. I could barely speak. It's kinda why I don't want to go to the Star Trek conventions and meet the stars. I'm so terrified they'll think I'm a freak. What the fuck would Nana Visitor think about me styling my hair like Major Kira? I'd be escorted out by Federation security officers.

They're not talking about a familiar neighborhood visit, they're talking about fans, strangers. Even so, it's not like I go around knocking on my neighbors doors unannounced, and this is a pretty unorthodox way of doing so... Who knows what the actual story is behind this. Doubt it's a stalking thing where they tracked down his address and drove 3 hours. I imagine these kids probably live somewhere in the neighborhood and maybe are acquainted with the lady who lives down the street from JW. Say she's the 13-year-old's aunt or something, and he loves trumpet and John Williams and she told him he's her neighbor. So the kid wants to do this and the older one (trumpet teacher?) humors him because what could it hurt. Yes, it's kind of obnoxious but it was a friendly prank and Williams seemed to enjoy it as a random occurrence. They probably laughed over it for a minute, hopefully they apologized for bothering him, and they all went home. It's fine. What I don't love is that now it's on YouTube -- with or without his permission -- and footage of John Williams at his home is now quickly circling around as a popular viral video. This thing went super mainstream, articles on Yahoo, People Magazine, Billboard. I see local news people posting in the comments wanting to do a story with the kids...it feels sorta gross, especially with how modest and low-security the place looks. I can't really think of any examples where something like this was seen as a positive thing, even paparazzi shots never show the celebs at their houses. I don't want this to turn into a circus, I don't want to see these guys doing interviews or dancing on the fucking Ellen DeGeneres show with that still of Johnny waving in his doorway up on a big screen. I don't want reporters hounding Williams for a quote about the incident. He's not Kim and Kanye, he didn't ask for this. EDIT: Looks like it was the older guy's idea, actually. A video of the performance was posted on YouTube by Michael Miller, himself a longtime TV composer. The clip shows him playing the famous theme on flugelhorn alongside 13-year-old trumpet player Bryce Hayashi last week on the sidewalk in front of Williams' home. The performance drew the composer to his door, and he later walked down to shake hands with the musicians. Miller told The Associated Press he came up with the "wild and crazy" idea to take the teen he was mentoring to serenade the composer, who lived a couple houses down from Miller's friend's home. It was the first time the two had performed the duet flawlessly, Miller said. Miller called himself a big "Star Wars" fan, but added, "I'm probably more of a John Williams fan than a 'Star Wars' fan." Sharkissimo

Richard Penna 3,683
I love Williams' reaction, but I have to agree that I think it was going over the line of politeness, and I think they were very, very lucky to get such a gracious response. Another composer, another circumstance, and you'd have a potentially very different reaction. Don't get me wrong - I love it when a composer enjoys talking to their fans, but I think you have to assume that they don't, at least not at their home... And Thaxton is the last person to lecture about manners and rudeness.
