This score might be worse than Independence Day: Resurgence.

Finally!  We've all been waiting on your take.

I kinda liked the score and went in blind (didn't listen to the suite or any music before the watching).  The use of the original 60's theme in the logo gave me hope but hearing MGs real theme for Spiderman was okay. It did remind me of tintin.

However all I could hum at the end was Vulture's theme. Anyone else draw parallels to the Bond motif from Casino Royale, at least to the first half of the Vulture theme?  It's all I can think about.

Yeah the Vulture theme is really catchy!

I have to say it:  This score is growing on me.

And I already liked it on my first listen!

I was blasting it on the car on the way to work today, and it REALLY is a lot of fun.  I like it so much more than Rogue One, Dr Strange, Zootopia, basically every "big" score he's done that isn't a Star Trek one in a long while.

It certainly doesn't break any new ground - the vulture theme really is extremely similar to all his Star Trek villain music - but its a fun summer action score.  I dig it!

So the superhero scores this year so far have been terrible-to-fine.  There's still Elfman's Justice League score to come though!  Can't wait to hear that.

I don't think I've listened to any other superhero scores from this year; What would they be, just Guardians 2 and Wonder Woman?

I love so much of Elfman's work, old and current, but I really have no idea what to expect from Justice League.  I hope its great!  I really liked his work on Avengers 2.

I had no intentions of checking either out.  I want to see both movies eventually, though

I'm not going to trek out to the theater for either, but will happily watch both at home with a beer in my hand

You don't see anything in a theater!

I'm very resentful (not really).  You could go to the theater all the time and don't.  I can't and would love to.  Being able to actually do a double feature this past Saturday was manna from heaven for me.

My cinema going has become more diffuse lately since all these blockbusters are being released back to back. I just can't afford it. But my cable TV more than makes up for it since it enables me to watch a different movie almost every night if I have the time.

Since we bought a house there's just so much to do at it, trekking out for a theater trip generally isn't in the cards.  We're also so much further away from any theater than we used to be.

Meanwhile i consider myself lucky to have a Pathe like system that lets you see as many movies as you want for a monthly subscription

I have around 50 cinemas within 5 kilometers of me and i go thrice a year when i am on vacation. You can have them all!

Oh wait Iron Man does have a theme in this score after all.

Karol

He does, but it is pretty bad. I wonder why Giacchino didn't choose to quote Tyler's instead, he seems to be the master of quoting past franchise themes and did a nice job adapting Silverstri's theme

Because then it would be confusing,  because his Spider-Man theme already sounds like Tyler's themes.

Monumental Meltdown is easily one of my favourite Giacchino cues from recent years.

As saulocf noted, it would have been nice to hear Brian Tyler's Iron Man theme instead of the throwaway melody that we got. Perhaps Tyler's falling out with Marvel has stymied any chance of musical continuity with his MCU scores. At least we got snippets of Silvestri's theme!

Webbed Surveillance, Drag Racing, Monumental Meltdown and Liftoff are highlights- all propulsive action cues with clear thematic development of both Spider-Man's and The Vulture's themes.

Academic Decommitment sounds like it could be of the same vein as Inside Out or Zootopia, but it's still cool.

It sounds an awful lot like his Cars 2 score.

I like the themes for Vulture and Spider. However Stark remains poorly represented. The theme is still very limited, but who knows, if Marvel allows it, he may have more "pompous" renditions in the future.

I'm not 100% sure what part of Elfman's main titles is his main theme, even after several listens

The main Spiderman theme is from 1:47 to 2:33.

There is a kinda B theme which starts at 2:49 to 3:07.

It is one of the great superhero themes.

I'm sure its a theme that works fine in the film when he shows up, but its not terribly exciting on its own, nor would it ever lend itself to a concert arrangement, etc.

I think the way Gia writes themes, very few of his themes lend themselves to concert arrangements. His themes are usually very short without interludes or B sections, so would not make very interesting Williams like concert suites. He does rather few of them I think even though many of his themes are quite attractive.

It's also the fact his themes are also very "circular" yet "static". They always end where they start - first statement leads to another statement in the same key. You can change the orchestration...or play them loud or soft...but it's mostly just window dressing. Each statement seems to be virtually the same. They almost never move to a different phrase/key and never change their contours much (if ever). Patrick Doyle, otherwise a very fine composer, has the same problem actually.

It's not like something, say, Rey's theme where Williams always changes not only key but themes' shape. And he also resolves it in various ways. True, it might make it less distinctive in the process but you get more satisfaction.

That is why enjoy Giacchino's work the most when it's textural and where his phrases are deliberately and appropriately simple.

Just came back from the film and was disappointed with how low the music was mixed, the sound effects were bumped up much higher that they drowned out the music, so it wasn't until the end credits that the mix was raised. I noticed a few cues that are missing from the soundtrack release, cues which follow on from the same material in Monumental Meltdown. There's also a lovely piano rendition of the theme that's present in the end credits that's unfortunately excised from the album.

Spider-Man's theme works well with this version of a younger, more clumsy Peter Parker/Spider-Man, it doesn't match Elfman's level of glorious heroism and majesty, but it's still memorable and effective.

It's just a shame about the mix, Monumental Meltdown was perhaps the only cue mixed loud enough to shine...

When I was watching the latest Apes I kept think how well his raw Lost thing devoid of adornments worked there, somehow

Not sure if it was mentioned, but earlier it was discussed that there was no mention of the Avengers theme by Silvestri in the album booklet, but it's mentioned at the end of the credits under the 'songs' section. Also a little bonus I didn't even realise was there, was the band practice segment that was cut is appended to the end of the Homecoming Suite.

I wonder if there's just a difference between screenings over here

I could hear the music fine

Though it wasnt an IMAX showing

I do remember the IMAX screening of Dr Strange having the music mixed unbearably low
