The Top Three of the Top Three

Recommended Posts

John Williams

1: E.T. The Extra Terrestrial

2: Jaws

3: Jurassic Park

Jerry Goldsmith

1: Star Trek: The Motion Picture

2: Rambo: First Blood Part II

3: Masada (soundtrack release rerecording)

James Horner

1: Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan

2: Braveheart

3: Willow

After some thinking these are the top 3 scores of my top 3 composers. All nine of them scores I discovered in my teenage years and which helped stoke my love for film music in general, and these composers specifically.

Like all lists its extremely subjective, but also extremely personal. And while each composer have done scores as good or possibly better, these 9 are the most important, to me anyway.

What's your top 3 of the top 3?

b) EDWARD SCISSORHANDS

Now this is one of my expansion-worthy holy grails. Along with some other Goldenthal scores.

Indeed it is. A masterpiece from start to finish. I've also been been fortunate to hear the music live on several occasions.

I'm also one of the few who think the film is really, really good -- especially in its extended cut.

Oh yeah i loved when Goldenthal prepared that extended suite for his Krakow concert. It was a large chunk of the score, if I remember correctly. You can't appreciate his skill as a composer and orchestrator without hearing it live.

If memory serves, I think I've heard ALIEN 3 selections twice in Krakow and twice in Ghent. All of them highlights. Never saw the Tenerife one.

Thor, don't tell anyone, but..."ALIEN 3", is my fave "Alien" film. Not the best, mind, but my fave, especially the extend cut. In 1992, when Ripley died, there were tears from at least one person in the cinema.

Elliot's Heat is spectacular too.  Don't see that one talked about much.

As you can see above, that's my number 2! It's generally among his most respected scores.

I actually think the CD is spectatular in how organic it flows between the existing music and the original material. Fantastic concept album!

I don't like this trend of calling people stupid or idiots for having different opinions than your own.
