The Austin Wintory Thread

I was at that session.  It was a lot of fun and the vibe was to quote Picard, "engaged",  Austin and his wife gave me a nice "good to see you here" hug and it was good to see many old friends in the orchestra.  I forget what the size of the orchestra was, perhaps 50 piece but brass heavy.

It is amazing what can be accomplished if you have a deadline...even when it is self imposed.

LOVE this Austin Wintory arrangement of Bernstein's "To Kill a Mockingbird."  I had no idea until this morning that Wintory had done this!  Starting the piece with a flute cadenza is a brilliant choice!

(at least I think that counts as a cadenza, someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Of what? Video games?

Mostly.  He's scored a bunch of pretty obscure indie films.

His most notable game scores:

Journey

The Banner Saga trilogy

Assassin's Creed Syndicate

Films, video games, concert works.

Why do you ask?

Because I had no idea who he was. If I did a thread on say John Agar most people wouldn't know who he was  and perhaps someone would ask.

Two things:

Austin Wintory has released a new score for the game ERICA!

And the release of JOURNEY on Apple devices gave me a good excuse to review Austin Wintory's music for the game :-)

I'm surprised you found AGOS and not Pathless. Dude's been talking non-stop about it and has TONS of behind the scenes stuff, lots of great content.

AGOS I noticed he RTed another account once and that's it.

Austin should be scoring a AAA game or a big budget movie. That way his work will be recognized by more people.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate doesn't have enough As for you?

Indeed. Wintory is probably more of a celebrity than most film composers who aren't Hans Zimmer. He has a pretty devout following in the game industry. And you'll definitely see his name mentioned in reviews a lot more than the average film composer.

I think Wintory has become very comfortable with the video game medium. I can hear, even in his writing, the luxuries that space affords him that the traditional film possibly doesn't.

I'm about 3/4 through The Pathless, and the music works really well in the game, often becoming part of the landscape, but stepping into the spotlight every once in a while with spectacular effect.

The already mentioned behind-the-scenes videos on his youtube channel are highly recommended, great look into the process (and who doesn't love to watch raw session footage?)

In case anybody breezed right past it, the first link in my post is a lengthy article about the project
