Wouldn't this count as a concert work?  All the same, thanks for posting!  Glad to see this thread active.  You never know when someone will record The Basket Game for cello ensemble...

Stumbled upon an album called John Williams Spectacular by the Japan Philarmonic Orchestra. Live recording. Quickly went through it, seems to be of decent quality and it's the first time Ive come across a good Far and Away suite recording.

Parts of that CD had already been available on a CD featuring the Star Wars suite. I already listened to some bits of the new material, and overall sounds quite good. I actually ordered it and should have it in another week.

Nice idea to pair Windows of the Past, with the usual Hedwidge and Wondrous tracks. It's better than Aunt Marge very ordinary waltz.

Just finished CD1 of that Japan Philarmonic album. After the JFK track, everything is mostly great. Before that, the trumpets are badly out of tune and maybe a bit too much emphasis on the timpani, but the Far and Away piece is gorgeous.

Anybody hear of this?  Apparently the unpronounceable virtuoso who released Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and Harry Potter 1-3 for two pianos in the last few years has an album doing the same with Close Encounters, E.T., Stargate, and Independence Day?!  Is this only available overseas?  The interview on this page makes it sound like his most recent work...

EDIT: Here's a year-old YouTube clip of a solo version of "Over the Moon," which is apparently on the album:

[Drumroll]

In November, probably to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Star Wars, there will be three CD-album releases from Walt Disney Records of what seems to be the original soundtrack releases of the original trilogy. All three will probably be single disc releases, as each of the original CDs and LPs had a running time of less than 80 minutes. Hopefully the Empire CD will include the missing LP tracks.

Also in November, there's two different LP releases of A New Hope: A 3 LP version titled Star Wars: A New Hope and a single LP version titled Star Wars: A New Hope (40th Anniversary) (Rsd). I can't see there's any new LP releases of Empire or Jedi.

In January, Sony Classical will release a 20 CD box named John Williams Conductor (with emphasis on conductor to distinguish him from John Williams the guitarist). This will most likely include both JW soundtracks, concert works, and music by other composers.

Rsd probably stands for Record Store Day, and they will have a batch of Black Friday releases, though I wasn't able to find any Star Wars related.

Earlier this year, they released this EP:

I'm rather curious about the "conductor" box set and if it will include any previously unreleased material from his Boston Pops recordings.

I would imagine it's just reissues of all of his releases on Sony Classical, with the exception of the film scores.

By my count, unless I'm missing something, it comes exactly to 20 discs:

With the Boston Pops:

1 The Spielberg/Williams Collaboration

2 Music of the Night

3 Music for Stage and Screen

4 I Love a Parade

5 The Green Album

6 Joy to the World

7 Unforgettable

8 Night and Day

9 It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing

10 Williams on Williams

11 Summon the Heroes

12 Cinema Serenade 2

13 Star Wars Trilogy (Skywalker Symphony)

14 The Hollywood Sound (London SO)

15 The Five Sacred Trees album (London SO)

16 Gershwin Fantasy (London SO)

17 Cinema Serenade (Pittsburgh SO)

18 American Journey (Utah SO/ LA orchestra)

19 Cello Concerto album w/Yo-Yo Ma (LA orchestra)

20 The Spielberg/Williams Collaboration Vol III (LA orchestra)

Other releases, like the 3-disc Music of America and the 80th Birthday Tribute CD are (mostly) compilations of music from these earlier releases, with just a few unique tracks.

If they announce a remastered sound, we're all doomed...

I prefer this order:

1 Music of the Night
2 Star Wars Trilogy (Skywalker Symphony)
3 The Spielberg/Williams Collaboration
4 I Love a Parade
5 The Green Album
6 Joy to the World
7 Night and Day
8 Unforgettable
9 Music for Stage and Screen
10 It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing
11 Williams on Williams
12 Summon the Heroes
13 The Five Sacred Trees album (London SO)
14 The Hollywood Sound (London SO)
15 Cinema Serenade (Pittsburgh SO)
16 Gershwin Fantasy (London SO)
17 Cinema Serenade 2
18 American Journey (Utah SO/ LA orchestra)
19 Cello Concerto album w/Yo-Yo Ma (LA orchestra)
20 The Spielberg/Williams Collaboration Part III (LA orchestra)

Maybe we can hope for a little bonus, like the 2006 "Memoirs of a Geisha - Live Sessions" EP?

It's funny, but the Philps BPO discography, reprensents 20 CD too, including the "By Request" album.

Could Deccas released it as a boxset?

Dang it, can't we talk about this 20-disc set somewhere else?  I keep noticing this thread getting bumped and expecting to find more new recordings of non-concert works...

I was just being hopeful. We all know by now how Sony/BMG works out this large box sets... With few exceptions it's just straight re-issues, all packed up on a large box.

It would be great to have a compilation of all of JW's recordings of his own music (and arrangements) with the BPO on Philips. This would include the tracks found on the compilation albums By Request and The Star Wars Saga, supplementing with the Jane Eyre suite, The Witches of Eastwick, America, The Dream Goes on, Yes, Giorgio, Fiddler on the Roof, and Swing, Swing, Swing (1941). Any tracks I've missed?

The love theme from Superman is included on the Star Wars Saga compilation album (identical to the compilation Star Wars - The Best of Space Music).

A great bonus track for the hypothetical JW/BPO/Philips compilation would be Gil Shaham's recording of The Devil's Dance, arranged by JW himself for violin and piano (on the album Devil's Dance on DG). In my opinion, this is even better than the orchestra arrangement.
