Uh-oh.

Well, it's Spielberg though... It has to be at least nominated, right?

A.I and Book Thief weren't box-office sensations or Oscar darlings and still got recognized.

Browsing the nominated scores list, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events underperformed and The Good German and Fantastic Mr. Fox were straight-up bombs (obviously the latter had great reviews, and maybe it broke even if its marketing budget was less than $6 million).

Basically I think if they like a composer enough, then they'll still nominate quality work even when the films aren't financially and/or critically successful. There's a decent chance they'll pass on BFG because it was such an anticipated film that disappointed and flew so spectacularly under the radar and there's a general sense from people that the music had all been heard before, but a John Williams score is always gonna be in the mix of possible nominees by default.

Dang, it's only the OST. Ah, well. Sure the complete thing will come out sooner or later.

I'm going to assume it's the same for Finding Dory. Shame, but not entirely unexpected.

Woah! Sully?! Thanks for letting me know @thx99!

EDIT: , I thought this hadn't gotten a commercial release since when I saw the film a while ago it hadn't, but I guess more recently it has, now that I check. Anyway, still happy!

Cool that the Sully files have the slates, btw! Trying to find my favorite moment from the film but not successful yet... Oh well, I'd better get back to my homework, I'll look tomorrow.

Sully is a strange case. I thought the film had very little music and what little music there was was very low volume stuff.

I did listen to the earlier album posted on the fyc site and could not recognize most of the music.

It was a very effective score in context. Well spotted. What I remembered most from the film was the theme heard here at the beginning (which I interpreted as the main theme):

That up and down piano melody was actually pretty catchy.

Were the vocals in the film too? I seriously can't remember it.

Oh, yeah, I can't remember them except of course for the end credits. But I saw this a long time ago. It's all a little hazy.

The film is so exaggeratedly understated and underplayed that I can't imagine this cue being in the film, might be too ostentatious with its vocals for an Eastwood film.

Oops!! I should have double-checked the links. I was in a hurry and used the Florence Foster Jenkins links as a template. I'll fix them ASAP.

EDIT:  OGG links removed for all films.  Allied MP3 links corrected.

I just checked and apparently the Bridge of Spies FYC went up on December 3 last year. So we could be looking at a week until the BFG's!

I think you guys are setting yourself up for disappointment if you think Disney is going to push The BFG for award nomations

It's a Steven Spielberg film.

How could they not at least put it up for consideration?

I mean, I don't think they'll make a huge push or anything, but is there really any chance they won't put up an FYC page?

Awards Circuit predicts the BFG will be nominated for best original score. How could Dreamworks not at least make a small push?

Also, I think it might be Spielberg's own Dreamworks that handles the FYC for this, not Disney. Although I could be wrong. I hope I'm right, because the Dreamworks page is dormant right now, as if in anticipation, while the Disney page is filled with plenty of films -- the BFG not among them.

but with absolutely no new music.

But can they even do that?

Williams' pesky microedits mean that, presumably, the OST is ineligible for consideration. They have to make a custom FYC if they're going to post any music, methinks.

Oh well maybe.  Didn't know the Academy had weird rules about score submission.

Here's what I found.

Quote

Works shall be judged on their effectiveness, craftsmanship, creative substance and relevance to the dramatic whole, and only as presented within the motion picture. Extended, revised, enhanced or alternate versions outside of the film shall not be considered.

So, at the very least, "Overture" and "Dream Jars" from the OST couldn't be considered. Unclear how microedits fit in. Do they count as revisions? Probably.

The people who put together the TFA FYC were definitely knowledgeable about the rules (this rule, and the one about not having much preexisting music -- in Star Wars, that would be, say, the main title). Hopefully the ones who do the BFG one are too! They could just be stupid or time-saving and throw the OST on there, I suppose, even though some of it can't even be considered.
