They are legally allowed to sell exactly 5,000, but are allowed to give our promotional copies outside of that, and replacing damaged discs counts as promotional copies that don't take away from the 5,000 count.

 

I remember requesting a replacement disc for the Danny Elfman Batman Collection, and the image on the actual disc itself was of a lower quality than the disc that came in the set, so I assumed they printed them on-the-fly?

That was released by a major company (Warner Brothers Records) and not a small specialty label (like La-La Land) so their procedures and practices could be different.

Intrada made corrections to their first disc of their recent Rambo: First Blood Part II release and offered free replacements to customers who had ordered through their website. They didn't send a new backcover or booklet to reflect those changes. And I wonder if they reprinted for new customers as well. That means their corrected, final release is a little bit different than mentioned in the liner notes and the track list.
